04/08/2005 12:26 PM Mac fans are getting keyed up for the immanent launch of Tiger,
which, according to Apple, will launch in the first half of this year.
Macworld readers were asked: "What Tiger feature are you looking
forward to the most?" in an online poll. With 1,532 votes cast it
emerged that more than a quarter (29 per cent) were most excited about
Dashboard.

Tiger 150, Longhorn 0
Tiger 150, Longhorn 0
08/29/2004 10:56 AMWhen Steve Jobs took the stage at the Worldwide Developers Conference
and unveiled the next version of OS X, Tiger, comparisons were quick
to be drawn to Microsoft's Longhorn — some by Apple itself with
a few strategically-placed banners. At the time, Longhorn was still
packed with the promise of a better search engine, one that seemed to
even put Panther’s superior engine to shame.
But then Steve demoed Spotlight, and all fears were put to rest. Set
to launch in the first half of 2005, Tiger continues to pile on the
features, while Longhorn, now looking at a <A

/A> target date, is trimming its own.
"We've had to make some trade-offs to deliver the features
corporate customers, consumers and OEMs (original equipment
manufacturers) are asking for in a reasonable time frame," said
Microsoft group vice president Jim Allchin.
Apparently, five years just isn't enough time to properly overhaul an
OS.
"In developing software, somewhere you have to put a stake in the
ground and there's often some hard trade-offs you have to make,"
said Michael Cherry, a analyst with Directions on Microsoft, an
independent researcher based in Kirkland, Washington.
The Windows File System, or WinFS for short, is — or rather, was
— "the active storage subsystem in Longhorn that is used
for searching, organizing, and sharing data. WinFS maintains a store
of items and their properties, and provides a system service in
Longhorn to retrieve information when it's needed."
However a <A

on the Microsoft Web site reads, "In spite of what may be stated
in this content, WinFS is not a feature that will come with the
Longhorn Operating System. However, WinFS will be available on the
Windows platform at some future date, which is why this article
continues to be provided for your information"

06/28/2004 07:47 PMWe are happy to hear that current and upcoming operating systems
will have built-in support for application-level metadata. Gnome

search metadata for files and applications. Google
is also expected to get into search applications on the desktop.

Longhorn Security: Real Or Just Bull?
Longhorn Security: Real Or Just Bull?
07/22/2004 11:07 AMSecurity in Longhorn will be better when the new operating system is
released in 2006 than security in Windows XP, which debuted in 2001 --
or so Microsoft has promised.
How much better though, is a matter of how effective Microsoft, as
well as Longhorn users, will be at staying one step ahead of the
hackers that will surely be gunning for Longhorn vulnerabilities.
For I.T. managers planning for Longhorn deployment, the key security
factor is the great unknown -- anticipating future vulnerabilities
that right now are a glint in the evil eye of hackers. All I.T. can do
for now is to upgrade existing systems in anticipation of Longhorn's
arrival.

Did Google Get Loud On Purpose?
Did Google Get Loud On Purpose?
08/13/2004 06:07 PMWell, it's a ridiculously slow news day, so it's really no surprise
that something like this might boil up. Following yesterday's efforts
to give techies and investment types an
extra
reason to buy a copy of Playboy, IPO pundit Tom Taulli is (half
jokingly... I think) rolling out the rumor that Google
purposely pushed
Playboy to get the interview out in order to have the SEC delay
their IPO until slightly more favorable conditions existed. That
would seem especially sneaky, and it's unlikely it's actually what
happened. Though, if it is what they tried to do, it appears the plan
didn't work. The SEC
has made Google explain away the difference between their filings and
the Playboy article, but otherwise has let the IPO move forward.

04/09/2004 04:00 PMWell, the web's a funny place, isn't it? Just the other day, I posted
my random idea about a trash talk virus for Mac OS X. You know, virus
is probably the wrong word. It's more of an ad-hoc network
entertainment application. But that's not the point. Anyway, within a
matter of a day or so it got some interesting traction. First off,
Ross suggested that it be used to help track down the folks who screw
up wireless networks...

Communities of Purpose: The Third Type of
Community
I've been thinking about different types of communities recently. Two
forms of community that are often discussed are "communities of
interest" where the members share a common set of interests (e.g. a
community of people interested in Japanese culture), and "communities
of practice" where the members share a common set of skills (e.g. a
community of marketing professionals). To these I would add a third
type called a "community of purpose," where the focus is on a shared
goal (e.g. a political activist community or a community collaborating
on a common project). Most existing community tools today are either
focused on building communities of interest or communities of
practice. But I am more interested in creating tools that help people
create more productive communities of purpose. To do this we need to
merge the functionality of groupware and knowledge management with
emerging community tools for social networking, blogging, and wikis.
