My cattle grazing grounds are not my idea and vice versa. But thanks to laws I can "own" the idea as if the idea was a cow ; link goes to a interesting university-level paper [PDF]. The author makes some interesting analysis and points attention to the fact that current intellectual property laws can go against well established economic theories at the expense of free market competition theory, technical innovations and society-as-a-whole best interest.

Recommended to people with economic theory experience , but also to everyday public-goods-privatization opposers as the paper isn't (intentionally) way too technical.

After a bit of researching I have come across a few sites that may be of help to all of us looking for some hotspots.

Ben Laurie has created a site that records the location of free-access hotspots across the UK. They are sorted in a searchable database of maps. Type in your postcode to allocate places where you can connect. Link it up at Consume.

Another organization that maps Wi-Fi hotspots is Arwain. They have "uncovered" most of Cardiff and have plans to bring free, fast wireless access to some parts in Wales. Check them out at Arwain.

And lastly for all the Torontonians out there I have a site that you might find useful. This site has a map of downtown Toronto and lists and the WEP enabled and disabled areas. For a view of the map check out Naked Wireless.

Wayport is just one of a handful of companies announcing new places to find hotspots over the last week: Visitors to San Francisco's Moscone Center will be able to get access from Wayport in common areas and meeting rooms by the spring. Most of the conference center will be covered by then with the rest coming later. A slightly different clientele will likely be using a new hotspot in Philadelphia. The mayor announced that the city will set up a hotspot in Love Park. Apparently the park used to be filled with skateboarders who were recently banned from using the park. But a compromise is being worked on that will allow skateboarders during certain hours. They'll now be able to tote their laptops to the park as well. In other city hotspot news, San Jose is planning a big bash Thursday, March 11 at 11:00 at the Circle of Palms to celebrate San Jose's downtown Wi-Fi service. The mayor and members of the Silicon Valley Wireless Communications Alliance will be there. Demonstrations of the service will be available and the new Downtown Wi-Fi portal will be launched. Finally, for those iPass customers who have been waiting for the iPass/T-Mobile agreement to come to fruition, the wait is over. Starting today, iPass users will see 4,200 T-Mobile hotspots in the iPass directory of available access sites. IPass customers can also find more information about those and all iPass broadband access sites now that iPass has licensed a directory tool from JiWire. IPass customers will be able to view maps of where the hotspots are and read detailed information about the venues that offer the hotspots. The tool includes information about all iPass broadband locations, wired or wireless, around the globe. JiWire is a Wi-Fi Networking News partner. The announcement about the T-Mobile sites isn't available online and JiWire doesn't seem to have posted its news release on its site yet....

Following the demise of Cometa last week, suddenly some people are "concerned" that all these wonderful WiFi hotspots are going to all go away. This seems like a bit of an overreaction to one company whose repeated missteps were well known throughout the industry. As the article points out, more and more people are now making travel arrangements based on their ability to have wireless access where they stay (and even at the airports they fly in and out of). If you have a situation where so many people want something, clearly there's an opportunity. Just because one company couldn't figure out that their business model would never work, doesn't mean that hotspots are going away. Companies are increasingly realizing that wireless access is important for business - whether they charge for them or even when they give away access for free. There are plenty of reports about places that say the return on free WiFi is significant. Also, many hotels and restaurants that set up free WiFi for their customers realize that the benefits for employees pays for itself as well. It seems a bit premature to assume that because one company couldn't make a bad business model work that the entire industry is doomed.

Michael Oh may have one of the most unique versions of a free Wi-Fi network anywhere. Oh wanted to extend Wi-Fi around his office, located on a tony stretch of Newbury Street in Boston, and to the shops on the street. He quickly concluded that he would have to charge users too much if he wanted to build a robust and reliable network that customers would pay to use. Instead, he decided to build a free network in hopes that it might serve as good PR for his Mac consulting, sales, and support business, Tech Superpowers. But building a free network that included more than one access point (AP) would be expensive to maintain because it would require paying for high speed data lines for backhaul. So Oh developed his own network architecture. "From an economic standpoint, it's an interesting architecture because it's simple," Oh said. "We can put up nine locations with a single T1." At each remote location he uses Apple APs plus wireless bridges from Linksys that were originally designed to wirelessly enable printers. At his central location is an AP with two outdoor antennas, each pointing in a different direction. The remote repeaters look like any type of client to the central AP. "So the AP at our location sees each repeater as nine client cards out there," he said....

Ithaca, NY, LightLink adds hotspots to its wireless mix: LightLink provides a multi-mile wireless link to my friend, colleague, and co-author Adam Engst, with whom I wrote The Wireless Networking Starter Kit. LightLink is providing free Wi-Fi equipment to qualifying locations, and will offer both free and paid access. Guests who are not LightLink subscribers (either to home, business, or the hotspot service itself) will have email and Web (port 80 only) access. Subscribers receive full access to all ports, so they can run VPNs and other software. It's a nice model that's being pursued by Telerama in Pittsburgh in which the hotspot market is of nominal value to the ISP as a pure revenue stream, but rather reinforces their ability to sign up more lucrative and steady fixed wired (DSL, etc.) or wireless customers....

Manchester, New Hampshire, plans to announce in mid-July that a hotspot will be available downtown for anyone to use free for one hour: It appears that the city decided it wanted a network and put out a request for proposal. Signull Technologies offered to fund and build the network and then offer one free hour per day per user. An hour a day might be useful for folks who may want to check email during their lunch break or for visitors to town. A new service in the UK lets Wi-Fi users find nearby hotspots with their cell phones: By sending a text message to a certain mailbox, users will receive a list of the nearest Wi-Fi hotspots. The service offers up hotspots that are near the cell site that the user's phone is communicating with. This is a fantastic offering for finding hotspots in an area users may not be familiar with. There are plenty of hotspot locators online, but they require users to investigate hotspots in the area in advance. For all the procrastinators out there or for folks who may find themselves unexpectedly in need of a hotspot, the cell phone locator service is great. TheFeature.com discusses how DoCoMo's 3G/WLAN phone protects cell voice business model: Carlo Longino writes that DoCoMo's N900iL handset works on 3G cell networks and office Wi-Fi networks, but that the company has somehow disabled it from working in hotspots. Is it disabled, or can it just not handle the authentication? Gateway pages aren't good for handheld devices, especially cell phones, but this is a great opportunity for 802.1X to enter the scene and handle the authentication. Longino expects that DoCoMo, T-Mobile, and other carriers won't make it easy to use voice over just any old Wi-Fi network because it could erode voice revenue....

iPass say they crossed the 10,000 hotspots mark in their aggregated network and then some: iPass now offers 11,179 Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide through aggregated partner networks. The release also says that they have 12,000 more under contract for the future, which is a quite extraordinary number. The 2,900 hotels included in this total all have Wi-Fi in at least public spaces, a company spokesperson confirmed. Many of them may have wired in-room broadband, however. An increasing number of hotels are starting with Wi-Fi from the get-go; others are converting from wired broadband to Wi-Fi for greater flexibility as costs drop, range increases, and wireless backhaul becomes simpler. The largest hotspot operators in the U.S. have boiled down to three companies for the near future: T-Mobile (about 4,500), Wayport (several hundred hotels with a mix of Wi-Fi and wired broadband, plus thousands of McDonald's coming online this year), and SBC FreedomLink (several thousand The UPS Store outlets, managed by Wayport)....

It would contain a mixed XML/HTML packet with a variety of useful fields and general text. These could range from simple descriptions ("This access point belongs to Joe Smith, I'm a programmer") to information ("On this site, Paul Revere stopped on his ride to consult with local minutemen") to street directions ("Turn right to get to highway 101, left for downtown") to, of course, advertising ("We sell fresh fruit and have a special on plums today.")

In other words, a replacement for signs and billboards and markers. And perhaps much more. Access points would also talk about themselves, declaring, for example, if the owner is offering open internet access for free or for fee, or has a local database of information, and what class of information is in the main text. The local lattitude and longitude for those without a GPS could be useful, along with local maps data in a compact form.

Update: Felix sez, "plazes is collaborative geo-tagging of networks, not just WiFi but any LAN. Unique identifier is the router´s MAC ID. In addition to structured data like address and type of network, people can upload pics and comments for that plaze/network. Publisher will build hotspots at bookstores in innovative approach: Sure, Barnes & Noble and Borders Books have had hotspots for some time now, with Borders claiming the older network. (Barnes & Noble signed its Cometa deal weeks before it shut down; now SBC operates B&N hotspots.) But HarperCollins's plan will bring Wi-Fi with a HarperCollins splash page to what sounds at least like a wider variety of booksellers and at no cost. It's an interesting move because many bookstores aren't set up to handle people with laptops, and there's always been some concern that access to perfect information in the form of book price comparisons at Amazon.com (or even my own service, isbn.nu) would erode on-the-spot impulse buying. The company said in a press release that they will launch a four-month pilot program, to be announced at this weekend Book Expo America. The publisher is providing free Wi-Fi access at the show....
