Syndicated Ads 07/09/2004 08:14 PM

Every so often, the subject of advertisements in syndication feeds bubbles to the surface; here are some recent remarks by Winer and Searls . Dave Sifry has a riff on this that I’ve heard him give a few times, but the more I think about it, the more I think there’s major potential in doing this right...

Cory Doctorow: Here are syndicated RSS and Atom feeds of pictures uploaded to the Flickr image-sharing site with the tag "Worldcon." Right now it's just a few undistinguished shots I took yesterday, but if you're at Worldcon snapping photos (and really, who isn't?) put 'em on Flickr and we'll get a bleeding-edge snapshot feed. (Disclosure: I'm an advisor to Ludicorp, the company that makes Flickr). Link

20,000 Syndicated Feeds 01/07/2004 06:22 PM
Thanks to the hard work of our reviewers, we recently reached the milestone of 20,000 hand-reviewed feeds. This is a major accomplishment, and one that I am really proud of. The reviewer community has taken things into their own hands and created a set of rules and regulations which go beyond anything I would have attempted to impose on my own....

As it turns out, you can do more with mp3s than just play music. Adam Curry, weblogger and former MTV VJ, has started offering visitors what he calls a "daily audio log" of syndicated radio shows through an iPod or other mp3 player. The project is called iPodder, and it uses RSS (really simple syndication) feeds with mp3 enclosures to allow users to download audio files from the Web to their mp3.

Dodgeit allows you to create throw-away email addresses (for crappy registration sites), and then delivers the email that comes into the resulting mailbox as an RSS feed that you and everyone else who can guess at your throwaway email addy can read. That's pretty sweet.
Pick a throwaway address, say: deeznuts@dodgeit.com Give that address out whenever you need to. Check deeznuts from homepage of dodgeit.com. Subscribe to RSS feed to keep an eye on the mailbox. Get it?

Imagine being a Radio Broadcaster and signing a deal with XM and then getting a notice from a Terrestrial radio station that said, drop your ties with the Satellite provider or else we are gonna drop your show. [Plast ic.com]

Personally I think this pretty funny as it is obvious that Terrestrial Radio is scared and knows their days are numbered. Thank goodness we have podcasting.

Jim sez, "MyStack.com lets you build Stacks - self-updating link lists that you can paste into your blog or web page. You can build a Stack that lists all the posts which link to your site, or a Stack that lists every message talking about a particular topic. MyStack.com uses PubSub's matching engine to match blog entries and newsgroup posts against your request in real time. That means that any time you look at a Stack, you're looking at the most recent set of links - we rebuild the Stack and rewrite the HTML for you, automatically." Link (Thanks, Jim!)

"Living Room" Interface Allows Users to Read Selected Content, or Watch On-Demand Video Content

DENVER, CO -- April 13, 2004 -- NewsGator Technologies launched NewsGator Media Center Edition today, which allows users to read syndicated content feeds on their TV with Windows XP Media Center Edition. Both text and multimedia content is supported, with an interface designed to be used with a remote control from across the room. NewsGator Media Center Edition shows information that has not already been viewed on another device by synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.

Audio and video content is only one click away. Users see visual cues when a feed contains multimedia content; they can then instantly view this content using the remote control. There are a number of featured feeds for the launch, including a video feed from Microsoft.

This is the latest step in the "any time, any place, any device" strategy that distinguishes the NewsGator product line. Users typically use more than one device throughout the day, such as Microsoft Outlook at work, a mobile phone on the road, a web browser in their home office, and a TV in their living room. NewsGator Online Services allows users to read one set of content from any of these devices, without any duplication. The combined power of NewsGator Media Center Edition and Online Services offers customers a productive and fun way to access their personalized subscriptions and information from any device, whenever they need it.

"NewsGator Media Center Edition is a great example of cutting edge ISV innovation on the Microsoft platform," said Sanjay Parthasarathy, corporate vice president of Developer and Platform Evangelism at Microsoft Corporation. "The deep integration of technologies like XML and RSS, combined with rich multimedia, and presented on a device as pervasive as the television, gives consumers access to the information they care about, where and when they want to view it, truly delivering on the vision of a connected home. We're proud to work with NewsGator to help bring this innovative application to market for our mutual customers."

NewsGator Online Services also includes other three content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while on the road.

The service also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers, as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed.

NewsGator Media Center Edition is included with the NewsGator Online Services subscription service, and is available immediately at http://services.newsgator.com. Pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.
