Art Mobs in Slate

Art Mobs in Slate 07/21/2004 07:44 PM

Slate is running a piece today entitled "Art Mobs" that takes a look at how collaboration between artists has changed as things move online. It covers graphical, film, and text pieces, but the best example is a song.

We've profiled MacJams before, the site built around sharing tracks for Apple's Garageband users. They've got Creative Commons licenses built in and this slate article highlights the final track "Please Eat." It is the fourth version of an earlier cut, and in the end four different musicians contributed 36 separate tracks to the final song.

I did some digging around and here is the original track, which is licensed under an Attribution license. If you'd like to further mash the track, the final track mentioned is under an Attribution-Noncommercial license.

Snowball Mobs!

Snowball Mobs! 12/05/2003 04:14 PM
With a potential blizzard blanketing the northeast, it looks like flashmobs are out and snowball fights are in. What do you think, are we gonna see a lot more of this kind of thing now that online invitations are setting the standard? This invite seems to be flying around NYC pretty fast indeed. The question is: How big will the battle be?

Cybercrime Mobs Revealed

Cybercrime Mobs Revealed 03/17/2005 03:07 AM

Baseline has a great series of articles on the different cybercrimes and how they operate. They talk about who are these cyber criminals and what the law enforcement agencies are doing to stop them. The articles are well written and I am certain you will learn something from reading them.

Crime is now organized on the Internet. Operating in the anonymity of cyberspace, Web mobs with names like Shadowcrew and stealthdivision are building networks that help crackers and phishers, money launderers and fences skim off some of the billions that travel through the Web every day.

The players and their games change so quickly it's hard to piece together who they are and how they work together. But that picture's becoming more clear, as the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI and other law-enforcement agencies crack open the networks and prosecute those that run them.

MOBS is a building system a la autoconf, but a lot easier for both developers and users. It's very easy to use and tune, even for medium-sized projects. If you want your project to be configurable and accept most "./configure" options but without the hassle and burden autoconf and friends impose, this is for you. It has good documentation and a low steep learning curve, and even has a bit of application framework in order to ease development.

Changes:
Due to a design flaw, "Makefile" must be called "Makefile.in" now. This prevents a nasty situation where the end user could do "make" before configuring the project with "0".

James Surowiecki's new book, "The Wisdom of Crowds," argues that diverse groups predict the future better than solo prima donnas.

How Dumb Mobs Beat Smart CEOs

How Dumb Mobs Beat Smart CEOs 06/02/2004 02:41 AM
Both the wisdom and stupidity of crowds is a fascinating subject. I once took an entire course that focused on the problems of "groupthink," which is more commonly referred to as the "echo chamber" these days. However, at the same time, disparate groups of people, all making decisions (say, in a market) can lead to some very intelligent solutions. Salon is now reviewing a book called < i>The Wisdom of Crowds, which is obviously a play on the old favorite, < i>Extraordinary Popular Delusions & the Madness of Crowds. However, I think that the title to Salon's article gets it wrong. They call it: Sm art Mobs Beat Dumb CEOs, when what the book is really talking about is that Dumb Mobs Beat Smart CEOs. That's the real point to drive home. The power of well organized markets that present information (where the errors cancel out and the real info remains) is a testament to the power of "dumb" crowds. They're not being intelligent - but it's the collective actions that reveal the pieces of intelligence. That network of supposedly "dumb" devices at the ends, is likely to beat out the centralized "smart" CEO in the middle. In fact, the book supposedly discusses companies that are experimenting with such distributed decision making processes, where the decisions of many can better forecast where the company is going than the top-down view of the CEO. Of course, if this book catches on, expect a number of companies to try to implement such bottom-up decision making in a way that misses the point and does more damage than harm (followed by the inevitable anecdotal evidence of why such things will never work) such as making everyone "vote" on certain pointless decisions that will just waste time.

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

c_flash_dime_bit.jpgPretec Electronics Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones, which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly, though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?

While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

My Official Title

My Official Title 10/30/2003 06:07 PM
For years, I've struggled to define my path. People ask what I "do" for a living, and it's difficult to give them a specific title. Writer? Entrepreneur? Geek? They just don't work, because I've always done things differently. To put a finer point on it, here's what someone just called me: a technical Renaissance man for the 21st century. Hopefully, I can get that to fit on my next business card. Everything is suddenly starting to make more sense; it's amazing what a fresh perspective can provide... and clarity is only the beginning. The foundation is forming, and I'm ready to build. Could you hand me that electric hammer? Thanks....

It's Official: TSA Lied 04/01/2005 05:35 PM
Donna Wentworth @ EFF: Deep Links
It's Official: TSA Lied

Two government reports confirm what EFF and other privacy advocacy organizations have long known: the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) lied about its role in using airline passengers as guinea pigs for testing "Secure Flight" - the latest version of a fundamentally flawed passenger-profiling system for screening terrorists. And not only did TSA lie, it lied repeatedly, to everyone.

A D HS report [PDF], released this past Friday, reveals that TSA misled individuals, the press, and Congress in 2003 and 2004. A GAO report [PDF], released Monday, also shows that Secure Flight has failed to meet 9 out 10 conditions the GAO set for giving the program the go-ahead. These conditions include providing adequate protection for passengers' privacy and ensuring the accuracy of the data it would use to classify people as terrorist risks.

Passenger records contain detailed personal information, such as your name, address, phone number, travel itinerary -- even your credit card number. Yet the DHS report says TSA shared passenger information with outside contractors while neglecting to "inquire whether the data used by the vendors had been returned or destroyed."

"This is worse than ChoicePoint," says EFF Senior Privacy Attorney Lee Tien. "It reflects an attitude toward the privacy of Americans that falls well below what people are up in arms about in the commercial data industry. These people have a public trust and they're abusing it."

For additional information, see Bruce Schneier's GAO's Report on Secure Flight; for background, see TSA and CAPPS II -- Anatomy of a Cover Up.

As Donna says, this just confirms things that we all sort of figured were going on, but this is quite an official acknowledgment. I wonder if there will be any followup action on the part of the US government.

The US doesn't have a monopoly on this stuff of course. I've been fighting very hard for privacy in Japan. What we ended up with was a privacy bill that allows the government to strictly enforce privacy rules for businesses, but leaves the government quite free and exempt from similar oversight, focusing more on the "ethics of civil servants." Of course there is also a carve out for "the media" so they don't scream about it too much. Unfortunately, in the case of the Japanese privacy bill, "the media" includes only TV and newspapers and not magazines and of course not bloggers. Although I agree that privacy violations by businesses is a problem and a threat, I'm still much more concerned about abuse by governments, particularly when there isn't a good oversight process. The US is lucky it has the GAO.

It's got pretty much the same specs as everything else in this segment, except notably the 1.5-inch screen. It'll be available on the 22nd in Korea for around $340. If they want to make it in the American market, let's hope they drop the price a little before it gets here.
