Paying For Fewer Features

Paying For Fewer Features

Paying For Fewer Features 11/03/2003 05:32 AM

There are some new features, but the important improvements are subtle and all over the place. The end result is that the system just feels better. (Steven Garrity via MyAppleMenu)

Paying developers to get features faster

Paying developers to get features faster 12/18/2003 03:22 AM
What do you do when your off-the-shelf software lacks all the features you want? If it's Open Source software, you can modify the program yourself, if you've got the time and expertise, but then you have to worry about supporting your mods, and whether they'll work when a new release comes out. You can ask the program's developers and hope they'll do what you request within a useful time frame. Or -- in some cases -- you can pay the developers to add the features you want, in the timeframe you want, as part of the main release.

Red Hat Professional Workstation: More

Red Hat Professional Workstation: More
expensive, fewer features
02/18/2004 03:50 AM
Red Hat Professional Workstation was designed to allow former users of the company's consumer product line to continue to use a supported platform without having to migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Unfortunately, it fails to live up to its predecessors in key areas, and is considerably more expensive in some usage scenarios. Home users should look to the Fedora Project if they wish to continue using Red Hat technology, or consider migrating to another Linux distribution. Small businesses should analyse their current expenditure and consider migrating to another vendor.

Vertu: Much More Expensive Phones For
Fewer Diamond Encrusted Features
02/10/2004 03:59 PM
You may remember Vertu, the Nokia spinoff that is trying to be the "Rolex of mobile phones" by offering insanely high priced gold or diamond encrusted mobile phones for "splurging millionaires." Well, not only are you spending more than a small car might cost (the original Vertu phones were around $20,000), you're getting less advanced technology. That's right, just like fine-wine, Vertu believes that important technology enhancements take time, and they don't want to rush them into their diamond encrusted phones until everyone is already onto the next big thing. So, if you're buying from the new line of Vertu phones (much cheaper than the originals at only $4,000 or so), don't expect such "advanced features" as Bluetooth, MMS or a camera phone.

The NY Times wants fewer links

The NY Times wants fewer links 06/17/2005 04:32 PM

A couple months ago, I chatted with someone who said the New York Times was considering going to a subscription model for nytimes.com, similar to the Wall Street Journal. I said that would be a foolish and short-sighted decision on the Times' part; to place their content behind a subscription wall would be to remove themselves from online conversations now and in the future.

Adam L. Penenberg, in an article for wired.com on February 24, 2005 about the Wall Street Journal's for-pay approach, Whither The Wall Street Journal? expressed a similar point of view:

Since most people refuse to pay for WSJ stories, most bloggers are reluctant to link to them. It also has an impact on anyone who uses the web for research -- and there are a lot of us. As importantly, the next generation of readers is growing up by accessing news over the internet, and one place they are not surfing to is WSJ.com. With their habits being formed now, there is little chance the Journal will become part of their lives, either now or in the future. (emphasis mine)

The Times should remove all barriers to content, from their registration requirement to their for-pay archive access
And yet, yesterday the Times issued a press release, The New York Times Announces TimesSelect - New Online Offering to Launch in September announcing their decision to move more content to an expensive for-pay only section of their site. This is a move in the wrong direction: The Times should remove all barriers to content, from their registration requirement to their for-pay archive access. Such action would enable and increase linking to their broad range of content.

As Jill Walker writes in her paper, Links and Power: The Political Economy of Linking on the Web, "Links have become the currency of the Web. With this economic value they also have power, affecting accessibility and knowledge on the Web."

Enabling more links to the New York Times would:

  • increase the visibility of the Times brand
  • help content reach a larger segment of readers
  • increase traffic to the site

Clearly, increased traffic would drive increased revenue in the form of online advertising. And in the long term, I believe it would generate more income than charging US$49.95 for an annual subscription. Perhaps US$49.95 is, as Martin Nisenholtz (senior vice president of digital operations for the Times) says, a "terrific price point" for what they're offering -- if you happen to live in the US or western Europe. But it truly is a world wide web, with English as its de facto language.

As media brands increasingly become more global, it's hard to fathom why the Times wouldn't do everything in its power to ensure it's the world wide web's news leader. By charging for its online content, the Times reduces its number of linkable sources, and thus its reach in the online world. It's their first step towards ensuring they will play a smaller role in it going forward.

Fakesters Are Okay If They're Paying... 07/12/2004 07:08 AM
As the whole Friendster phenomenon seems to be dying out as people find other random social networks (or something entirely different) to fill their spare time, it appears Friendster is getting desperate to come up with some way to justify the somewhat ridiculous valuation they received when the VCs came crawling. There was a big fuss among some last year when Friendster started deletin g "fakester" profiles of random famous or imaginary people, claiming that such profiles had no place on the site. Well, now it turns out that they do have a place on the site if it's a big movie company paying to make sure they have a place on the site. At least that seems to be the explanation of why Friendst er is now allowing fake profiles for characters in a new Disney movie. Of course, unlike the original fakesters, which were often fun, this will come off as clear, blatant advertising, and probably won't interest too many people.

To hear people complaining these days you'd think that there were no more computer science students taking classes any more, and the three or four who were would never find jobs. It seems that's not true. Enrollment in computer science is definitely down, but people say the quality is much higher, as these are students who actually are interested in the topic, as opposed to those boom-year students who just studied it because they thought it would let them ride the wave to dot com riches. The schools also note that it's more difficult to find jobs, but they are placing the majority of their students in tech jobs.
