Personally I find the current online layout a little bit hard to read and confusing, this is the sort of thing that could really be improved if only people were allowed to 'remix' it for better legibility." New story of mine online

New story of mine online 12/08/2003 11:38 AM
My short story, "Beat Me Daddy (Eight to the Bar)" (which wasn't included in the collection, but is still a personal favorite of mine) was originally published in the print magazine Black Gate last winter. Now, thanks to the good graces of Fortean Bureau, an excellent webzine, the story is online for free in its entirety. This story is my tribute to Wyndham's post-apocalyptic literature. Here's a taste:
We were the Eight-Bar Band: there was me and my bugle; and Timson, whose piano had no top and got rained on from time to time; and Steve, the front-man and singer. And then there was blissed-out, autistic Hambone, our "percussionist" who whacked things together, more-or-less on the beat. Sometimes, it seemed like he was playing another song, but then he'd come back to the rhythm and bam, you'd realise that he'd been subtly keeping time all along, in the mess of clangs and crashes he'd been generating.

I think he may be a genius.

Why the Eight-Bar Band? Thank the military. Against all odds, they managed to build automated bombers that still fly, roaring overhead every minute or so, bomb-bay doors open, dry firing on our little band of survivors. The War had been over for ten years, but still, they flew.

So. The Eight-Bar Band. Everything had a rest every eight bars, punctuated by the white-noise roar of the most expensive rhythm section ever imagined by the military-industrial complex.

We were playing through "Basin Street Blues," arranged for bugle, half-piano, tin cans, vocals, and bombers. Steve, the front-man, was always after me to sing backup on this, crooning a call-and-response. I blew a bugle because I didn't like singing. Bugle's almost like singing, anyway, and I did the backup vocals through it, so when Steve sang, "Come along wi-ith me," I blew, "Wah wah wah wah-wah wah," which sounded dynamite. Steve hated it. Like most front-men, he had an ego that could swallow the battered planet, and didn't want any lip from the troops. That was us. The troops. Wah-wah.

Cory Doctorow: Flotsam sez, "It's a unique event when a country drafts its first constitution. Even rarer is one that exposes it to the world in a PDF. The latter is even more noteworthy when the country is one that has successfully protected its culture and heritage from outside influence. The draft Constitution has been released in both Bhutan's indigenous language, Dzongkha, and English. Any country that says 'gross national happiness is more important than gross national product' has to be a model for the rest of the world."

So cool. Inexplicably, the constitutional site is marred with "Copyright(c) Constitution Drafting Committee. All Rights Reserved." They've even obfuscated their html. Because goodness know you wouldn't want your constitution being pirated. Link (Thanks, Flotsam!)

Cory Doctorow: This amazing Alice in Wonderland site collects versions of Alice as drawn by dozens of illustrators (including a wonderful page of Alice avatars). I'm very fond of the Mervyn Peake interpretations.

Alas, the site-author, who has appropriated hundreds of images from various artists, has decided that s/he should be immune from this treatment: right-clicking on many of the links and images yeilds an insulting Javascript popup that says, "Please don't take my images." Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM

The Copyright Board of Canada issued a ruling on " private copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not (presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new charges.

the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current Canadian law. However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the board said.

3afghan_women_primary.jpg imageThe US Department of Health and Human Services has teamed up with LeapFrog -- makers of the children's learning toy, the LeapPad -- to use the talking books as teaching aids for illiterate Afghan people, especially women. In a country where almost 80% of women cannot read, the 42-page interactive books provide health information about diet, pregnancy, sanitation, and other important topics in either of Afghanistan's two primary languages, Dari and Pashto.

LeapPad uses regular paper pages with a stylus that recognizes which pictures are being touched, triggering an audio playback from through an on-board speaker.

The Story Behind The Story Of The Google
IPO?

The Story Behind The Story Of The Google
IPO?
07/26/2004 12:14 PM
This morning, it seems like the big Wall Street tech story is the official release from Google about what they think they'll raise from their IPO. Looking over all the different coverage, it appears that many (especially in the financial press) seem to be getting the story a little mixed up. The basic facts seem to be that approximately 24.6 million shares will be put on the market with a range of $108 to $135 per share. As noted in the story, some seem to think that breaking $100 may prove to be a psychological barrier for many retail investors, even if the actual price per share is meaningless. Still, if the price is a psychological barrier, rather than a calculated decision, the investor probably shouldn't be buying anyway. A minimum bid from anyone must be for five shares, so anyone who wants in is spending over $500. The range is higher than expected, and could lead to a valuation pushing $40 billion. One analyst makes the bizarre statement that: "The question is not what the company is worth, but instead what people will pay for it," which misses the fairly simple, but important, point that the price people are willing to pay for the stock is what the company is worth. Meanwhile, many news articles are claiming that Google will raise $3.3 billion in the offering, which is not true at all (or at least, extremely unlikely). The details show that Google is likely to bring in about $1.66 billion (and possibly as high as $1.9 billion at the top of the range). That's because only 14.1 million of the 24.6 million shares are actually being sold by the company. The other 10.5 million are being sold by insiders. Now, that's a curious point that no one seems to be focusing on. While insiders do sometimes sell during an IPO, it generally doesn't look too good. While there are plenty of reasons (liquidity, liquidity, liquidity) that people might want to sell, usually insiders get locked up for a bit. It does happen, but in this case, an awful lot of that $3.3 billion (or whatever the amount actually is) isn't going to the company, but to others. The initial IPO filing tried to spin all this insider selling as a good thing, but that's pretty questionable. If people really believe in the stock, why are so many selling it at the very first chance they get? Doesn't inspire the most confidence in the world.

Versioning -- Coming Up

Versioning -- Coming Up 01/22/2004 07:33 PM

We'll be posting drafts of the new versions of our licenses later this week. About a month of review time will follow, and then we'll revise as needed and turn the new licenses on. Throughout the next couple of weeks we will explain how the process of versioning will happen.

Meantime, here's a preview of the highlights:

  • Warranties will now be a matter of choice for the licensor. The new licenses will disclaim warranties, but licensors will of course be free to negotiate warranties with licensees who demand them. (We'll also work on a protocol to help people add warranties if they want to -- but that will come later on.) Special thanks to Karl-Friedrich Lenz and Dan Bricklin and many more for persuading us on this point. More explanation in a separate post soon.
  • The attribution clause will include a link-back requirement simliar to the one previously discussed here. Licensees will only be required to link back to licensors if (1) it's reasonably practical to do so; (2) the licensor actually specifies a URI; (3) that URI actually points to license information about the work.
  • The Share Alike provision will be more flexible. The provision will allow licensees to license resulting derivative works under Creative Commons licenses that feature the same license restrictions/permissions, including future and iCommons versions of the same license.
  • The Share Alike provision will also be clearer about what happens when different kinds of Share Alike content is mixed together (e.g., How to license a collage made from an SA photograph combined with an NC-SA photograph).
  • We're still looking into the issue of compatibility between our SA licenses and the GNU FDL. Compared to the above improvements, this potential tweak came on our radar pretty recently. We'll do our best to address it. Thanks to the many of you who've written in on this point.
  • Other minor tweaks.

More soon.

Versioning and extensibility in XML
formats

Versioning and extensibility in XML
formats
09/20/2004 12:26 PM

On the Atom-Syntax list they're talking about versioning and extensibility, two problems that are very easily solved in XML.

For versioning, define a required version attribute on the feed element, a string in the form x.y, where x and y are two numbers. X is the major version, and y is the minor version. So a version 0.3 feed would have a version attribute whose value is "0.3". A version 1.0 feed would have a version attribute of "1.0".

For extensibility, allow the format to be extended through namespaces and trust the W3C, who is the owner of the namespaces spec to tell you how to do it. Build on the works of others.

For extra credit, the format should evolve by adding new elements. A processor can tell whether it should expect the new elements or not by checking the top-level version attribute.

I honestly don't think there's another way to do it, so all the arguing and fussing is just going to end up there, so you might as well just do it. Of course this is just my opinion, I have no position re the Atom working group, or the RSS advisory board.

Versioning -- Public Review Begins

Versioning -- Public Review Begins 01/26/2004 06:27 PM

As we announced last week, we're getting ready to roll out Version 2.0 of the eleven original Creative Commons licenses. Review a draft of v2.0 of the by-sa-nc license (from which all other licenses are composed) and let us know what you think. It'll be up until Feb. 15, and we may make updates in the meantime -- we'll let you know.

A review of the changes, with directions to the relevant section:

  • Warranties will now be a matter of choice for the licensor. See Section 5a.
  • The attribution clause will include a link-back requirement simliar to the one previously discussed here. Licensees will only be required to link back to licensors if (1) it's reasonably practical to do so; (2) the licensor actually specifies a URI; (3) that URI actually points to license information about the work. See Section 4d.
  • The Share Alike provision will be more flexible. The provision will allow licensees to license resulting derivative works under Creative Commons licenses that feature the same license restrictions/permissions, including future and iCommons versions of the same license. The Share Alike provision will also be clearer about what happens when different kinds of Share Alike content is mixed together (e.g., How to license a collage made from an SA photograph combined with an NC-SA photograph). See Section 4b.
  • Ideas for creating compatibility between our SA license and the GNU FDL are coming soon. We'll post here and to the cc-licenses list when it's ready.

Thanks.
