Tuning in with TunA

Tuning in with TunA 12/04/2003 04:43 PM
We're still waiting for the first wireless iPods to appear, but Media Lab Europe is already working on a software application called TunA for streaming audio between wireless PDAs, cellphones, perhaps someday, even MP3 players. Most certainly a promising step, but we'd much rather be able to swap files with our friends, not stream them. One of the big problems with TunA is that if the person whose device you're streaming from moves out of WiFi range, you're out of luck. Read [Thanks to everyone who write in with this one]...

Top Ten Web Performance Tuning Tips

Top Ten Web Performance Tuning Tips 07/03/2002 06:06 AM
This article is by Patrick Killelea, author of Web Performance Tuning, 2nd Edition. I debated for a while as to whether I should post a link to this article here because I disagree with at least 5 of the tips. Normally when this happens i dismiss the article as one written by a scripting kiddie and forget about it. However Patrick has written an O'Reilly book on this topic!

I disagree with 2,4,5,8 in general (though you can always point out specific examples that apply) and 9 is useless if you do not manage your network. What do you think?

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...
