05/27/2004 01:53 PMWith the $1,795 Stylus Pro 4000, Epson focused considerable energy on
improving the print engine, including minor improvements to print
quality. This was a wise decision; the 2200 and the 7600 produced
stunning prints, and Epson sticks with the same UltraChrome
pigment-ink formula in the 4000. As a result, the overall quality of
both color and monochrome prints is excellent.

AMD Samples Athlon 64 4000+, FX-55
Chips, but on 130nm
09/10/2004 07:19 AMWhile Advanced Micro Devices is shipping its 90nm processors to
customers at present, the company’s higher-end chips targeted for
introduction later this year may still be made using mature 130nm
Silicon-on-Insulator technology. Pictures of AMD Athlon 64 4000+ and
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 processors located at a Chinese web-server have
been posted in a forum thread of AMDZone web-site. Availability of
such pictures may mean that AMD is sampling its processors that are
expected to be formally introduced in Q4 2004 with some makers of
computer mainboards or computers, if the microprocessors’ photos are
not fake ones.
Besides product pictures, the forum member who remained anonymous has
also placed screenshots from CPU-Z software revealing technical
information about the AMD Athlon 64 4000+ and AMD Athlon 64 FX-55
central processing units. It appears that the model 4000+ will be
clocked at 2.40GHz, contain 1MB of L2 cache and sport dual-channel
memory controller, fully copying specs of the currently shipping AMD
Athlon 64 FX-53 processor for Socket 939 infrastructure. The FX-55
product will also have dual-channel memory controller, 1MB of L2
cache, but will function at 2.60GHz, bringing new performance heights
to Sunnyvale, California-based AMD.

Video Without Boundries' MediaREADY 4000
Still Kicking
07/30/2004 07:07 AM
Threebase is reporting that
Video Without Boundries is still planning on releasing the MediaREADY
4000, a set-top media hub and networked DVD player with a variety of
flash memory card slots, a built-in hard drive, and Ethernet (but no
wireless?) It certainly looks full-featured enough, with FireWire and
USB slots right up front (and hopefully on the back, as well), but
when it ships Real Soon Now for $450 we'll be able to see what sort of
boundryless video experience they actually intend on providing.
No mention of the VIA co-branding this time around, although
Threebase's Noah Kravitz does mention VWB's plans to "license their
technologies along the lines of a tiered, scaleable solution
marketable to consumers and telcom providers alike."

Two New Value Projectors from Epson:
PowerLite 81p and 61p
06/03/2004 01:35 PMEpson has added two new
projectors to its low-end "Value Series," the PowerLite 81p (with a
native XGA resolution of 1,024 x 768 and pictured right) for $1,800
and the 61p (with a native SVGA 800 x 600 resolution) for $1,500 that
should be available around the 20th of this month. The standout
feature? A 'blackboard mode' that enables the projectors to detect the
color of the surface they are displaying on (let the old school green
blackboards (did I just use 'old school' in proper context?)) and
adjusts their color output to compensate. I'd like to see that in
person. In addition both share a 2,000 lumen brightness rating and
quiet fans.

Epson HX-20 Portable Computer
Epson HX-20 Portable Computer
02/01/2005 09:08 PM
Almost twenty-five years ago, floppy drives were far from the
only removable storage available (and don't even think about hard
drives, which were too expensive for home computers for many years to
come). While many popular home machines used cassette tapes to store
data—including the Radio Shack TRS-80 series that I first cut my
teeth on—even those were too bulky to include in some of the
first portable computers. Epson's HX-20 used a micro-cassette drive
instead, which allowed it to store not only data or audio, but hybrid
data/audio combinations that could trigger sound clips recorded to the
tape to add audio to a program, such as playing an alarm bell (at
least I think it could; its successor the
PX-8 can).

Epson intros 4MP L-410 digital camera
Epson intros 4MP L-410 digital camera
07/12/2004 05:26 PMEpson America Inc. announced on
Monday the introduction of a new digital camera, the PhotoPC L-410,
which includes a 4 megapixel CCD sensor, 3x optical and 3x digital
zoom, a 1.5-inch LCD screen, continuous shooting of up to three photos
per second and a new feature called Print Image Framer. The last
option allows you to add one of over 100 frames to any image before or
after you take it, without connecting the camera to a computer. When
the L-410 ships in late July, it will carry an estimated retail price
of US$399 and will come with 16MB of built-in memory, with support for
SecureDigital memory cards up to 512MB, and one CR-V3 battery. The
camera also accepts two AA alkaline, Ni-Cd or NiMH batteries. As
MacCentral posted this article, a product page was not yet available
on the Epson Web site.

Epson/NGK Announce 5mm Gyro-sensor
Epson/NGK Announce 5mm Gyro-sensor
08/27/2004 07:16 PMNeed some tiny gyroscopes to go with the new OKI accelerometers? Epson
and NGK have just what you need. "The
world's smallest" gyro-sensor with built-in drive circuit; a 5mm,
surface-mount device that can measure angular veolocity with a
sensitivity of 0.67 mV/deg/sec at up to 100 degrees per sec. Combine
three of these with one of the recently announced OKI tri-axis
accelerometers and you've got a dirt-cheap IMU that would fit on
even the smallest robot. Like OKI's part, Epson's gyro is made for use
in cellphones, cameras, and navigation systems.
Epson hits another ink cartridge maker
Epson hits another ink cartridge maker
06/17/2005 03:46 PMFor the second time this week a manufacturer of Epson-compatible
ink cartridges is taking its products off the market as a result of
legal action by Seiko Epson, the Japanese company said Friday.

Environmental Business Products has stopped importing and supplying
Epson-compatible printer cartridges as a result of an out of court
settlement between the two companies, Epson said in a statement. Epson
had brought proceedings against the London company in the U.K. High
Court for infringement of a number of patents and registered designs
owned by Epson, the statement said.
The company and others like it offer ink cartridges or refills that
can be used in Epson printers and are typically cheaper than those
from Epson. For printer makers the sale of replacement ink is a major
source of profit.
The action couldn't immediately be confirmed with the U.K. company,
which has operations in the U.K., France, Germany, the Netherlands,
Sweden and Spain. The Epson statement included a quote from
Environmental Business Products' managing director, saying sales of
Epson-compatible cartridges were stopped because the company isn't
confident its products would be found not to infringe on Epson's
patents.
In addition to the halt in sales, Environmental Business Products
will also have to pay legal costs and "a substantial payment" for
damages, Epson said. The amounts involved were not disclosed.
Earlier this week Epson reached a settlement with Hong Kong-based
Multi-Union Trading Co. as part of a patent infringement lawsuit
brought in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon in
Portland. That will see 75 of Multi-Union's cartridge models barred
from being imported and sold in the U.S., Epson said. The cartridges
are sold under the PrintRite brand and other names.
Epson is also pursuing a number of other companies, said Alastair
Bourne, a spokesman for the Suwa-based company. They include Armor, a
third-party cartridge maker in Nantes, France, which is being sued in
the same Portland court as Multi-Union. The spokesman wouldn't name
any other companies.
The recent string of court actions and resolutions doesn't point to
a crackdown but comes as a result of Epson deciding to publicize the
legal actions it takes, Bourne said.
"It's important to send a message out that we are serious about
defending our intellectual property and also protecting fair
competition," he said. "We believe in respecting other people's
intellectual property and we expect other people to respect ours and
so we'd like to send that message."
