Moving and the Post Office

Moving and the Post Office 12/05/2003 11:15 PM
We are a more mobile society today than ever before, with people moving more often and for reasons that would have given pause years ago. Yet we are also a more connected society, in every sense, communicating with more entities than ever before. Including through the postal service. Yet one problem that this brings about, particularly with regard to mail delivery, has only been getting worse and with no apparent means of correction in sight. This article has a decidely American slant, but only due to lack of familiarity with the postal services of other countries.

Can The Post Office Survive In The
Digital Age?

Can The Post Office Survive In The
Digital Age?
09/01/2004 08:58 PM
Not sure why there are so many stories today about the potential to go "paperless," but the latest is a story wondering just what's going to happen to the US Postal Service in this electronic age. While some are worried that the USPS can't survive, others think there are plenty of opportunities for them. For example, someone in the greeting card business notes that while electronic greeting cards were expected to harm the paper greeting card business, it's actually helped expand it -- because people stay in touch with more people thanks to email, and still feel obligated to send paper cards for certain occasions. Of course, with so much of our snail mail system focused on bills and checks (to pay those bills) a widespread move towards electronic billing and paying could seriously undermine the post office. Some expect the cost of sending letters to start to increase to make up for this -- though, assuming a reasonable level of price elasticity (maybe not a reasonable assumption), this only seems likely to decrease usage of the post office. Either way, the article notes some European countries are already privatizing postal operations -- though, it doesn't sound like anyone is suggesting that here. In the meantime, most attempts by the USPS to update themselves for a digital age haven 't worked out too well.

Buy A Post Office On eBay, Get No
Training, Run A Scam, Get Arrested

Buy A Post Office On eBay, Get No
Training, Run A Scam, Get Arrested
08/17/2004 03:50 AM
Next time you think about buying a Post Office on eBay remember this story. We hear stories all the time about weird things going up for auction on eBay, mostly because eBay has become a new PR platform for selling weird or unusual items. A few years ago, a woman in a small town in Texas put up the general store she owned for sale on eBay. That store just happened to include a US Post Office. A married couple bought the store and started to run the Post Office themselves, despite having no training at all -- something they felt was a bit of a security threat. They claim they asked repeatedly for the training, but no one would return their calls. Postal Service accountants were calling and complaining about the way the couple filled out forms, but since they couldn't get the proper training, they just gave up filling out the forms altogether (or filled them out on an irregular basis). Then, the money orders started showing up. Boxes of 500, good for $1,000 each. The wife wanted to ship them back, but the Postal Service said she couldn't. She eventually hid about a million dollars worth of the money orders in her daughters diaper bag, afraid of what would happen to them. Eventually, since no one was paying attention to them, they decided to force the situation, and had someone purchases $4,500 worth of the money orders with a bogus check... which certainly got them noticed, and shut down the store. The details of this story all seem a bit sketchy, and the only account the NY Times comes up with is from the couple who bought the store. The story seems to raise many more questions than it answers, so it would be nice to hear the other side to get a better idea of what really happened. In the meantime, though, you might want to think twice about buying a Post Office on eBay.

Xeni Jardin: A life-sized sex doll caused a bomb alert in a German post office when it began vibrating inside a package:
"Workers were unsettled when it began vibrating and made strange noises," a spokesman for police in the eastern city of Chemnitz said. "They were worried the package might be a bomb." Officers brought the sender to the scene and discovered the source of alarm was an electrical device inside a life-size female sex doll. The man told police he had wanted to return the doll because it kept turning itself on at the wrong moment.

Blowback: The Cost And Consequences of
American Empire plus War And Conflict In
The Post-Cold War, Post-9/11 Era
03/13/2003 10:25 AM
Chalmers Johnson is an provocative proponent of the American Empire theory, indeed. Here are excerpts from his Blow Back: The Cost And Consequences of American Empire

I heard Johnson interviewed on Episode II, War And Conflict In The Post-Cold War, Post-9/11 Era of The Whole Wide World

The Cold War and its central conflict - the physical and ideological battles between the United States, the Soviet Union and their proxy states - imposed a certain logic and consistency on the world. Take that away and add the bloody wars in the Balkans, Africa and the Middle East in the ‘90s as well as the terror attacks and warnings of more recent times and you get a very confused picture of a world at war. Is this breaking storm in Iraq about oil, democracy, freedom, empire, culture, water, diamonds, modernizing Islam or nation building in the Middle East? Some, one or all of these things?

It was an excellent program and well worth your listen, either by RA now or mp3 later. (From listening to the radio)
