The Olympics network: Faster, stronger
-- and redundant
07/09/2004 06:18 PM

ATHENS, GREECE -- A steady stream of taxis grinds up the hill to the headquarters of the Athens Olympic Committee headquarters, on the northern edge of the city. In the lobby it's all bustle as visitors mill around the accreditation desk and pass through security controls. But on the second floor the glass-walled technology operations center sits idle -- most of the 135 seats in the control room are empty, and all but one of the screens on the video wall are dark.

My favorite Olympic story so far is when Jacques Rogge praised the Greeks on Sunday for having the Games ready to go. The Olympics start Friday - there’s nothing like being finished early… ;-) “If you’re planning on attending this month’s Olympic Games, you’d best be careful what you say and do in public. The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics

The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics
08/20/2004 02:25 AM
We've already talked about how the Olympics forced certain radio stations to pull their internet streams because they weren't approved for internet broadcasts of the Olympics, and now comes the news that no athletes participating in the games are allowed to talk about their experiences on websites. Considering the number of empty seats (and the weak television coverage), giving the games a more personal feel, letting the athletes talk for themselves (rather than those sappy profiles on TV) would help people to connect more with the games. That, though, would involve remembering that the games are actually about what happens in the events, and not how much the Olympics can squeeze out of sponsors. Haven't they figured out yet, that if no one cares about the games, no one will want to sponsor the Olympics any more? As for those who dare to disobey and actually talk about their experiences online? The Olympics are threatening to remove their credentials or possibly "take legal action for any monetary damages." Monetary damages? From posting your thoughts on the games? Seems pretty clear just how focused the Olympic organizers are on money instead of the athletes and the contests.

Linksys says faster..FASTER!

Linksys says faster..FASTER! 01/04/2005 08:10 PM
Over at CES, Linksys will be announcing a new series of 802.11g products that integrate SRX, a new speed boosting feature.

Currently, 802.11g networks have a range of between 120 and 160 feet and a transfer at 54mbps.

Linksys claims that the SRX enabled 802.11g products can provide 3 times the range (450 feet) and is 8 times faster (i.e. nearly USB 2 speed wireless).

It's completely compatible with other 802.11g and 802.11b networks.

The wireless router is expected to sell for $199 and each card around $129 and should be available at stores shortly.

Stronger Foundations

Stronger Foundations 02/01/2005 09:44 PM
The Net today is standing on slightly firmer foundations than it was a few weeks back. On December 15th, the W3C issued Architecture of the World Wide Web, Volume One as a “Recommendation”, i.e. as close as they get to calling anything a standard. If you read it, there’s a lot of focus on URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers, as in what we usually confuse with the Universal Republic of Love). Today saw the final publication of the URI specification as RFC3986, also known (even more impressively) as IETF Internet Standard #66; some of the IETF’s most widely-deployed protocols never make it to “Full Standard” status. I’m hopelessly biased because I helped write both of these documents, but I think that each is individually important and that the combination is really important. Most people can’t possibly imagine how much work it is to grind these things out, and how many revisions it takes to get one right. I originally wrote all of what is now Section 6 of RFC3986, and I think there are very few sentences in there that haven’t been updated a few times, almost all for the better, and almost all the work was done by Roy Fielding, who deserves a deep bow from us all. The Internet and the Web aren’t things and they’re not places, they’re a mesh of agreements that allow us to talk to each other and to be less stupid. These two documents are important links in that mesh.

Plastic Muscles Get Stronger 03/08/2004 11:16 PM
Wired has an article talking about how electroactive polymers (EAPs) have gotten stronger and longer lasting. EAPs have gotten strong enough to have a practical self contained robot (NiTi never has gotten this strong). These muscles rival motors in that they're very quiet and very strong and now long lasting enough to use as fans in computers. EAPs can expand to 5 times their size, a feat unproducible by piezoelectric materials. Of course these new EAPs have the Navy's attention. Look for plastic muscles in your robot's future!?
