To enable it, just create a folder '~/Library/PDF Services' and populate it with aliases to applications, scripts, Unix tools, or other folders. Those items then show up in the Print dialog as optional handlers for Mac OS X's built-in 'Save as PDF' feature. Drop a renamed alias to your mail client in there, and you've added convenient 'Send PDF as Email' functionality to every application."

Connecting Devices with Web Services

Connecting Devices with Web Services 05/04/2004 09:12 PM
Digital devices are moving from the domain of the tech-savvy to the hands, purses and pockets, homes, and cars of mainstream consumers and knowledge workers. From cellular phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) to gaming devices and wireless digital jukeboxes, these digital devices represent a key opportunity for hardware and software vendors. Although each device may provide access to information, the lack of high-fidelity connections among these devices limits the scenarios that the device and software manufacturers can bring to life.

Microsoft is leading a group of vendors proposing a specification intended to extend Web services to devices. An official at rival Sun Microsystems, however, blasted Microsoft for what Sun believes is another attempt to foist a Web services standard on the rest of the industry. Along with BEA Systems, Canon, and Intel, Microsoft on Tuesday is proposing WS-Discovery, which purports to bring the benefits of Web services to devices by enabling discovery of services, such as a laptop finding a local printer. WS-Discovery, which is being unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum event in San Francisco, describes a way for devices to find and connect to Web services in a simple, lightweight way, according to Microsoft.

Installing and configuring network-connected devices is not always a simple task. However, by extending the benefits of Web services to a rich and diverse set of devices, Microsoft and industry leaders are reducing the complexity of device-based integration. The Web services architecture offers a standardized mechanism for devices to send and receive information over a network without needing to know what operating system or application software is on the other side.

How Do You Definitively Uninstall
Windows Software?

How Do You Definitively Uninstall
Windows Software?
02/05/2005 09:16 PM

How do you completely remove an application from a Windows machine? (Warning: this post will give Mac users a gratuitous chance to gloat.)

Windows has a tendency to scatter apps to the four corners of your hard drive when you install (see thi s). Installing some apps is roughly akin to firing a shotgun through a bag of granulated sugar onto deep pile carpeting. The question then becomes, how do you impersonate a vacuum cleaner?

When I want to make sure I've really gotten rid of a Windows app, here's what I do:

  1. Uninstall from Add/Remove Programs
  2. Run "msconfig" and look for anything that might be related to the program that auto-starts, including Windows Services
  3. Reboot
  4. Search for and delete the Program Files folder
  5. Search for and delete any related folders in the "Local Settings" and "Application Data" folders in my profile
  6. Search for and delete any related registry keys
  7. Search for and delete any related environment variables
  8. Search for and delete any related Start Menu items

Anyone else want to offer suggestions?
