Senator Ditka? 07/09/2004 05:05 PM

With Jack Ryan dropping out of the Illinois Senate race due to the sex club allegations, who should replace him on the ballot? For one group of Illinois Republicans, there's only one man for the job, a man who already has plenty of name recognition and knows a little something about winning...Mike Ditka.

Al Franken is thinking about running for the Senate:
As Al Franken considers challenging Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., for re-election in 2008, the comedian and liberal radio host is looking to his hometown senator for advice: Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"I asked Hillary, 'Can you give me some suggestions about running for Senate in a state you haven't lived for in a while, or in your case, ever?' " Franken recalled, laughing heartily. "And she said, 'This will be a long conversation,' so we agreed to have a long conversation about it."

A Republican senator who gets it

A Republican senator who gets it 05/28/2004 03:34 PM
From a profile of Senator Warner (R-Va) in today's Washington Post: Warner says his committee has a "solemn responsibility" to discover what went wrong and to "make sure it never, never happens again." But some conservatives are angry about the high-profile televised hearings, saying the prisoner-abuse issue is overblown and threatens to undermine the United States' primary mission in Iraq. ... "I think he should stop the hearings at this point; we've heard enough," said Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.), a committee member. "We have a war to win, and we need to keep our talents concentrated on winning the war as opposed to prisoner treatment." ... But Warner shows no signs of backing off, arguing that the country wants and deserves a vigorous examination of the sexual humiliation, physical abuse and torture of Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison. He has held three televised hearings this month to question top Pentagon officials and military commanders -- two more televised sessions than the House has allowed -- and he is planning more. Friends say Warner -- a sailor in World War II, a Marine during the Korean War and secretary of the Navy before he came to the Senate in 1979 -- is motivated by a strong belief that the reputations of both the military and the Senate are at stake unless they get to the bottom of the scandal. "To do otherwise would be contradictory to everything he has experienced in his professional life," said committee member John McCain (R-Ariz.). Besides, McCain added, "it would be incredibly stupid politically." ... Warner's pursuit of the issue has the backing of most Armed Services members as well as Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (Tenn.), though he has infuriated some conservatives. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), another committee member, has expressed concern that the hearing may be "a real distraction from trying to win the war, especially at this most fragile time." House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (Tex.) also suggested a lower profile for the prisoner-abuse issue, saying, "We should not allow it to distract us from the war at hand."... "Senator Warner is a military guy through and through. He volunteered twice, served in the armed forces twice -- that's twice more than a lot of members," said Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.)... Some see Warner's intervention against North and his outrage over the prisoner abuse as dual reflections of...

Senator Tries to Block GMail 04/23/2004 09:33 AM

Legislator seeks to block Gmail: I don't agree with the senator's logic here. Like I've said before, GMail is essentially a big bribe. In exchange for 1GB of storage, you give up some privacy. So long as people understand that going in, where's the harm? You won't catch me doing it, but other people are willing to live with the creepiness for that much space. I say good for them.

Blasting Gmail as a horrific intrusion into Internet users' privacy, a California state senator has introduced legislation to block Google's free e-mail service.

State Sen. Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from the Bay Area city of Fremont, said Thursday that it should be illegal for a company to scan the text of its customers' e-mail correspondence and display relevant advertising--even if customers explicitly agree to the practice in exchange for a gigabyte of storage.

Senator Proposes Email Tax

Senator Proposes Email Tax 11/19/2003 10:26 AM
One of the popular ideas that always gets kicked around as a way to stop spam is to add a "small" fee to every email that gets sent. This isn't on the basis of any real costs, but simply on the basis of stopping spam. Now it appears that a Senator is starting to push for the idea (though, worded in a way that he can later say he didn't push for it - if it proves to be politically unpopular). At a first pass, it may sound sensible, but there are any number of problems with the idea. First, the added cost of setting up, monitoring and maintaining such a system - and collecting the "tax" would be prohibitively expensive. Not to mention the fact that spammers would simply figure out a way around the plan - and the only people left paying the "tax" would be folks sending email legitimately. Running a mailing list would suddenly become much more expensive as well. It sounds like, so far, most of the problems with an email tax have been clearly stated, so it's unlikely to go anywhere. These are all attempts at "simple" solutions - and people are becoming aware of the fact that spam isn't a simple problem with a simple solution.

Senator Kennedy on "no-fly" list 08/20/2004 12:33 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Senator Ted Kennedy says he was denied boarding on three shuttle flights in one month, because he's on the federal "no-fly" list of terrorist suspects.

His aides had to call Tom Ridge three times to get taken off the list. Imagine how hard it would be for one of us lesser human beings to get taken off the list.

A Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman's explanation makes me even more nervous about the way things are being run be the feds. She "insisted Kennedy 'is not on the list, not now or ever. His name was similar to someone else's alias.'" [italics mine] Is it supposed to make us feel better that innocent people can be denied boarding for having a similar name to a suspected terrorist's alias? L ink (Thanks, Paul!)

US Senator calls for P2P Summit

US Senator calls for P2P Summit 01/19/2004 01:55 PM
BoingBoing pal John Parres says:
Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN) is back in the news. Last fall the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which he chairs, scrutinized the RIAA's crackdown on file-sharers. Last week during a Consumer Electronics Show panel he said, "With the advent of technology such as peer-to-peer networking, law, technology and ethics are now not in synch. We need to find other ways to solve the problems rather than issuing lawsuits and lobbying Congress to pass tougher laws." Now, lo and behold, he is planning to convene a peer-to-peer (P2P) summit within the next two months. (Story link)

The Senator says, "I believe we need the technology experts, the computer industry, the peer-to-peer industry, the software industry, the entertainment industry, the privacy experts and the business experts to come together and discuss positive and meaningful solutions to this challenge facing a major segment of our economy." A voice of reason in the Senate? I for one am hopeful.

Needs To Be Done

Senator Hatch: It May Be Wrong, But It
Needs To Be Done
07/22/2004 06:27 PM
Well, it looks like the hearings on the INDUCE Act went pretty much as expected. Senator Hatch explained why P2P systems need to be banned, even if it's wrong to do so. That's not exactly what he said, but he did say, "If you help us, we just might get it right. If you don't, we're going to do it." As far as I can tell, that statement means, "We know we might be wrong, but we still have to do it." But why? "Something has to be done." Inspired law making. "This must be done, even if it makes things worse." This is followed by Senator Leahy's ridiculous explanation supporting the bill: "We have to understand that some people use P2P technology in ways that are wrong and illegal." Apparently, Senator Leahy needs a refresher course on the law. If it's already being used for illegal things then that means the law already covers it, and making other things illegal is pretty pointless.
