Where is Robot-Valley?

Where is Robot-Valley?

Where is Robot-Valley? 07/09/2004 05:04 PM

A new robotic trends article uses an assortment of statistics to predict where we'll see the robot equivalent of silicon valley. After describing lots of maps of population-adjusted densities of unspecified local robot clubs, contests, and start-up companies, the author concludes that robot valley will be on the east coast, unless it's on the west coast, or somewhere else, or unless the Japanese take over the whole market first.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

The Uncanny Valley

The Uncanny Valley 08/19/2004 03:21 PM

Dr. Mori's Uncanny Valley: Fascinating theory on robotics here. Make them lifelike, but not too lifelike.

...the more human-looking a machine becomes, the more people are drawn to it. For example, a robot that has arms and legs and can talk but clearly looks like a machine is typically embraced as a scientific wonder. But at the point when a robot looks and acts almost human but not quite, people are repulsed and the approval rating plummets.

The sudden dip is called the Uncanny Valley because something that comes across as an off-kilter version of humanity is, well, uncanny. It's profoundly disturbing when something blurs the line between human and non-human.

More on this subject here and here.,

Silicon Valley 100

Silicon Valley 100 02/01/2005 09:19 PM

Silicon Valley 100 is a project by Auren Hoffman. I was lucky enough to make it on the list. The idea is to make a list of "connectors" and send them new gadgets and products to test. Newsweek just did a story about this. I think it is almost like an opt-in focus group. The obvious criticism would be these companies are trying to buy "buzz". The difference between this and some buzz creation companies is 1) it's not stealth 2) they don't tell you what to say. I checked with Auren and he says that we can write whatever we want about the products. When I get a product from Silicon Valley 100, I will state this clearly in any blog post that refers to it and will say what I think. I realize that the fact that we probably get to keep most of the products makes it a bit like bribery, but if it's crap, I'm sure most people will throw it away. I would be most interested in products that are still not on the market where our feedback could be incorporated in the product design. Then our feedback could be more constructive...

Anyway, I'd be curious on people's thoughts.

The first product is a brondell high-tech toilet seat. I told Auren, that this is one product that Japan is a world leader in. I blogged this before, but we have over 50% household penetration. The one in my house and in my office even has anti-stinky gas-gate like air filtration.

UPDATE: Just uploaded a 5 min 4.3 MB conversation with Auren Hoffman, the founder of the Silicon Valley 100.

UPDATE 2: Uploaded it to archive.org too. Maybe I should put my media files there instead since archive org does the file conversions for me too...

Thanks to everyone (and there were a lot of you) for submitting this story from the San Jose Mercury News talking about fore ign companies "onshoring" jobs - basically, opening up an office and hiring people in Silicon Valley, because of the various benefits of the location: lots of smart people, lots of other companies for partnering and selling, and easy access to venture capital. While the numbers are small compared to offshoring, it brings up the point we've been saying for a while. Despite the naysayers, there are jobs where a physical presence in a certain location makes a lot of sense.

Why I like living here in Silly Valley

Why I like living here in Silly Valley 07/19/2004 11:30 AM

From a recent CNet article....

Google recruits eggheads with mystery billboard

A billboard placed this week in the heart of Silicon Valley posed a complex mathematical question that most commuters on Highway 101 would need Google to crack.

Turns out the search-engine heavyweight--which was behind the anonymous, stark-white ad with black lettering--only wanted to lure the math-minded who wouldn't need Google's database in the first place, and give them a job.

The recruitment ploy certainly plays on mathematician Paul Erdos' famous quote: "A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems."

In a kind of geek "Jeopardy," the billboard read:"{first 10-digit prime found in consecutive digits e}.com." The answer, 7427466391.com, would lead a puzzle-sleuth to a Web page with yet another equation to solve, with still no sign the game was hosted by Google.

Mastering that equation would lead someone to a page on Google Labs, the company's research and development department, which reads: "One thing we learned while building Google is that it's easier to find what you're looking for if it comes looking for you. What we're looking for are the best engineers in the world. And here you are.

"As you can imagine, we get many, many resumes every day, so we developed this little process to increase the signal-to-noise ratio."

Google, which is preparing for a $2.7 billion IPO later this year, is methodical about hiring people. With 1,907 employees as of March 31, the company has been rigorous about its methods since day one. One of the company's first employees, back when Google was operating out of a garage in Palo Alto, said that Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google co-founders, had at least eight how-to books on hiring people on a nearby desk during his interview. Company recruits have also said that they have endured numerous interviews, sometimes with math or business strategy tests, before receiving an offer.

Google has also hosted programming challenges for the last couple of years as a way to spot talent. Many of its computer scientists, however, come from Stanford University's Computer Science department, according to recruits. In another clever recruiting method, Google has sponsored paid listings on its own search results pages to draw potential staff members. For example, it has sponsored ads on the keyword/name Udi Manber, who is the chief of Amazon.com's new search technology unit, A9.

Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., is advertising on a billboard near the Ralston exit leading to Santa Clara. It may introduce more billboards in future locations, according to a company source.

Japanese Robot Supermodel

Japanese Robot Supermodel 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
Okay, don't get too excited, this isn't quite as life-like as you imagined when you saw the headline. Roland Piquepaille sent us this news on Japanese robotics, "A Japanese designer has developed a mannequin robot, Palette, which can adapt its movements to the shoppers passing in front of it, according to an article from Agence France-Presse (AFP), "Striking a robotic pose". Using motion-capture technology, Palette will be able to act as a supermodel. And with its specialized sensors and software, it also will be able to identify the sex and age of shoppers before transmitting them to store owners for marketing purposes. The price has not been set yet, but Palette should go on sale in 2005 in two versions: a body without legs to showcase clothings, and a torso model for jewelry." See Roland's blog for more details and a photo of Palette, a robot which intentionally has no face. Another photo is available in a recent CNET news article.

The wheel-shaped robots move by continously alterning their shape. They are able to roll over flat surfaces, climb up to 20-degree slopes, and jump up to 8 centimeters into the air simply by changing their shape. More photos and video are available on Yuuta's website.

This pint-sized fellow will relay back camera information, listen for intruders, and can even put out fires. Interestingly enough, they are touting the Guardrobo as a solution for the problem of an aging population. Because 1 in 5 Japanese are 65 or older, they don't have enough strapping young security guards. Therefore, they'll become subservient to demonic robots. "BRING ME OIL, OLD MAN!"
