04/07/2005 12:45 PMA few months ago I received an offer from Wired Magazine to renew my
subscription and simultaneously sign up a friend for a free
“gift” subscription. Since I enjoy Wired anyway, I took
the bait, signed up a colleague, and didn’t think anything of
it. Then about six weeks later I received a bill for my Wired renewal,
which I paid. A week passed and I received a bill for my gift
subscription. “That’s odd,”…

So many of the photography periodicals and magazines these days are
all geared towards the digital photographer which, even as a digital
photographer, I never buy since they seem to be filled with articles
on topics that don't interest me and oodles of ads. The Academic
Bookstore in Helsinki has an admirable assortment of various
magazines, including B&W, a lofty art photography magazine and
Leica World, a bi-annual journal that doesn't seem to have a lot of
content.
I finally ran across Leica
Fotografie International which focuses on Leica cameras and
photography and isn't so highbrow since it has a number of articles
for those of us who are enthusiasts if not world class artists. There
is a lovely mix of practical articles interspersed with Leica photos
you can appreciate and dream of taking yourself someday. LFI may be
one of the last non-artsy film photography magazines left so, if you
have a Leica or just like interesting photos in the street or
photojournalism genre, you might consider subscribing.

Tired Is Wired
07/14/2004 06:35 AMPaul Boutin's latest piece for Slate is an amusing story about a
friend of his who registered the domain name
Tired.com back when both were working
at Wired (remember all that Wired/Tired hype?). Like so many people
who ended up owning a website, he had no idea what to do with it and
put up a simple message: "Are you tired? Tell us why" and linked to an
email address. It turns out, people were tired, and they had no
problem telling why. For the past seven years, the guy who runs the
site has
received over
32,000 emails, coming in at a fairly constant rate during all that
time. The site isn't advertised or talked about much (until now, I
guess), but tired people keep showing up and answering the question.
Boutin posts a couple of examples, and then notes that no one tries to
disguise their identity. He believes that they simply don't think
about the consequences at all, and are just answering the question.

used XP was that codecs and viewers were constantly being downloaded
automatically. That process was shielding millions of people from the
intense politics surrounding the formats in which they receive and
transmit data -- from the question of their legality or illegality,
whether they are proprietary or not, what terms and restrictions
attach to them, to whom they are available and for what purposes,
whether they work well, who created them, why, and when, whether they
will continue to be available and to whom and from whom, what and
whose strategies they are a part of, with what and with whom they
interoperate, under what conditions -- all invisibly submerged and
putting the world of codecs and formats squarely under the power of
marketing."

Seth Godin : Are bl0gs backward?
Seth Godin : Are bl0gs backward?
07/26/2004 07:47 PM
Seth Godin
Are blogs backward?
This leads me to two thoughts:
a. a lot more blogs should be posted in chronological order, like
books. If you're trying to chronicle something, it makes a lot of
sense to start at the beginning, as long as you provide regular
readers an easy way to just read the current stuff (That's what RSS is
for, right?). No, this isn't right for gizmodo. But it makes a lot of
sense for someone, say, chronicling her experience in a 12 step
program.
b. we need Movable Type or someone to create a simple way to create
"greatest hits" pages. Not an archive, but a simple way for a new
reader to read the ten posts we want them to start with, in the order
we want them read, before they dive in.
I know it's weird to read a chronological blog. It's worse, imho,
to leave a great blog just because the last two posts don't make sense
out of context.
I think that blogs are creating a new
format that people have become used to reading. Regardless of whether
it is the most effective format, people are now accustomed to seeing
new posts on top, stuff in the sidebar, etc. Granted that many people
are reading blogs for the first time, I think that there is too much
momentum to make a dramatic shift in the way we present information on
blogs without a lot of confusion.
I think that making a "greatest hits" page easier to create makes
sense. I personally like wiki pages for that sort of thing, but I
could imagine it being built into a tool. Another thing people do is
to put a sidebar section of favorite items and permalink from
there.
Or maybe there is a way to create another view that allows you to
read a blog from the beginning. That should be that hard.

Moneydance Eases a Tax Burden
04/11/2005 08:22 PMJeff Carlson (~1010 words)
Like many people in the United States
right now, I'm putting together my taxes. My wife and I have a few
investments and a shared money market account through Morgan Stanley.
I needed some information from the money market account (how much we
paid for health insurance last year). Although we have lots of paper
statements at home, I figured it was time I put all of it into
Quicken, where I keep track of my checking, savings, and credit card
accounts. I've been lax about digitizing that information, because
most of the time it's all taken care of by our financial planner at
Morgan Stanley. The company offers online access to my account, so I
thought I would download my data, import it into Quicken, and run a
report that would spit out the figures I needed.
