10/29/2003 03:28 AMMicrosoft plans to launch software for a new portable media device
next year. The device will allow users to listen to music and watch
movies on the road. Microsoft hopes the software, called "Portable
Media Center," will be an answer to Apple's iPod music device, which
is currently the best selling digital music device on the market. The
Portable Media Center will be manufactured by Creative, Sanyo and
Samsung, and will be on store shelves for the second half of 2004.

10/29/2003 01:14 AMMedia2Go, Microsoft's new operating system for personal video players,
isn't called Media2Go anymore. From now on the software will be known
as Portable Media Center. Now we know it's tough to let go of the old
name that we had all gotten so attached to, but if it's any
consolation, the first Portable Media Centers should start appearing
from ViewSonic, Creative, iRiver, Samsung, and Sanyo sometime in the
second half of next year. Read [Via eHomeUpgrade]...

Expands to Connected Televisions, New
Portable Devices
01/06/2005 12:17 AMToday at 2005 International CES, Microsoft Corp. announced broad,
additional support for the PlaysForSure™ logo program - both for
devices and upcoming services. In addition to many portable music
players that are PlaysForSure-verified, there are now new televisions
and DVD players designed for PlaysForSure compatibility that feature
built-in connections to wireless or wired home networks for the easy
playback of photos, as well as subscription-based music and video via
a Windows® XP-based PC. At CES 2005, D-Link Systems Inc. and Digitrex
debuted connected high-definition (HD) TVs, HD displays and DVD
players designed to be part of the PlaysForSure logo program, and
Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. demonstrated a concept plasma display.
In addition, a range of new color-screen, mini-hard-drive portable
devices supporting both music and photos are designed to be
PlaysForSure-verified, including the Gateway MP3 Photo Jukebox, iriver
H10 and the Samsung YH-925 and YH-820. First announced at Microsoft's
Digital Entertainment Anywhere launch event in October, the
PlaysForSure logo is designed to help consumers with Windows XP-based
PCs choose devices and online music and video stores that work
together, taking the guesswork out of compatibility.

Is Online Registration For News A Ploy
To Make Online News Look Bad?
09/17/2004 02:31 PMThese days, I very rarely agree with anything written by John C.
Dvorak, who seems to be spending his time
not
really understanding what's happening in technology. However, his
latest column has an interesting theory. We've been talking a lot
about how many newspapers have a
backwar
ds thinking policy requiring registration just to read the same AP
and Reuters stories everyone else has. The public claim is that
they're doing this to give their advertisers more data about their
visitors, but the amount of dirty data that goes into these databases
suggests
that
doesn't make much sense -- and could get them in legal trouble.
Others point out that online editions are really doing this to get
email for the sake of selling their mailing lists to marketing
spammers, which does make some sense, though isn't a particularly well
thought-out strategy for long term success. Dvorak's take, however,
is that newspapers are doing this
to keep
people out on purpose. The idea is that newspapers want to play
down their online operations, to show that their paper editions are
still much more important. He believes they
don't want the
online editions to be profitable, as that would mean serious changes
for their business. If true, this is an incredibly stupid position,
basically trying to convince themselves that news isn't moving online
when it really is. It's even worse than just not believing what's
happening -- it's working to screw up the data they use themselves in
figuring out what's happening. Honestly, though, this seems unlikely.
It would involve too much thought. It seems, more likely, that the
push towards online registration is from newspapers who haven't really
thought the issues through, but who think this will somehow pay off.

Pockefami: Portable NES
Pockefami: Portable NES
08/16/2004 06:51 AM
From the Japanese company
that brought you bizarre products such as the Gameboy Advance TV tuner
and USB battery recharger (that also works from the Playstation 2 USB
port) comes the "Pokefami," or a portable version of the Nintendo
Entertainment System. Though this reeks of vaporware, I guess because
of the renderings rather than photographs, the specifications are,
let's say, "realistic."
It features a 2.5" LCD screen, meager 3 hour battery life, video
out for connecting to your TV, and even a port for plugging in another
controller. Cost? 13,000 yen, about $117 USD. Quite steep, considering
a sizeable flash cart for a normal GBA SP can be had for that price.
Not that I would encourage anything as quasi-legal as emulation, but
hey, just saying.

Vonage Goes Portable
Vonage Goes Portable
12/18/2003 03:38 PMOm Malik breaks the news that Vonage will soon have laptop and
PDA-based software client for its service: It's not news that Vonage
has tens of thousands of subscribers, nor that they offer a
high-quality, full-featured hardware-based broadband voice-over-IP
service that allows you to map multiple incoming real phone numbers to
your virtual line. It also not news that you can get high-quality
software VoIP clients; I'm personally enamored of Xten's suite, which
work with Windows, Mac OS X, LindowsOS, and Linux. They're beautiful
and come in free and paid flavors, including a multi-line conference
version. The Xten clients can interface with any standard SIP (Session
Initiation Protocol) server, and many of the VoIP providers who offer
long-distance over the Internet use standard SIP gateways. But getting
from Xten outbound to the VoIP provider is a pain: I had to have the
CEO of Xten provide me the details for a couple of VoIP services;
those details aren't on the VoIP long-distance service sites. Then
there's the question of inbound service. Even though you can use Xten
as the default client with Addaline.com, it's unclear whether you can
receive inbound calls via their service. Most of the VoIP in software
is focused on making calls to the PSTN and receiving calls from other
folks using services like Free World Dial-up, which provides you with
a free non-PSTN VoIP number and SIP gateway. Om's scoop is certainly
that Vonage is going to package the software and PSTN offering into a
no-configuration package that will be as easy to use as their hardware
service. Vonage's hardware solution is pretty simple: open the box,
plug it in, wait a minute. You're done. Voice mail calls can be
alerted via email, and other features can be enabled through the Web
site's dashboard for your account. Because Vonage works over
broadband, a Pocket PC or a laptop equipped with their soft client in
turn connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot or access point means free phone
service everywhere -- it's another incentive to lower cell phone plans
(for roaming purposes) and increase the number of hot spot locations.
I'm a recent Vonage convert. I use my cell phone as my office and
roaming line, and although I'd switched to a $130/month plan from
Cingular because of their rollover minutes, I had $250 and $450 bills
in September and October during particularly intense work periods.
Yes, that's...

Another Portable NES: Game Axe
08/16/2004 12:41 PM
So
apparently that Pockefami portable NES machine we were talking about
is far from the first portable NES player. In fact, the GameAxe, from
Taiwanese grey market manufacturer Redant was created way back in '95.
Although never released in the US for obvious reasons, the GameAxe is
essentially an NES in portable form, with a 3.8-inch LCD screen and a
screaming 1.8MHz 8-bit CPU. They fetch high dollars, though, from
retro freaks; this one on eBay is probably going to go for well over
$200.
There was another portable unit that could play NES carts, as well,
called the "Top Guy." It reportedly had a general suck to it, but it
did have one cool feature: an FCC-be-damned low-power VHF transmitter
that made any TV within a few feet display the game you were playing.
(Thanks, Myron!)
