Why does my Apple laptop beep at me?
Why does my Apple laptop beep at me?
04/09/2004 03:54 PMOk. It's driving me so mad that I'm forced in the end to appeal to
the general public. My laptop appears to be beeping at me. Every so
often - no more than once a day, for some reason which appears to be
hardware-related (I'm not even sure it's coming through the
Powerbook's speakers) it beeps at me. Two sets of two beeps in the
form: beep-beep beep-beep, always the same tones. There doesn't appear
to be any particular rationale for when it beeps, except that it could
be related to whether it's on my lap or not (I've never heard it
happen at work) and/or whether it's being charged (I don't think I've
ever heard it beep when it wasn't being charged). It's really worrying
me as I don't know what's causing it to protest. It could even be a
bloody alarm clock for all I know (except that it doesn't seem to beep
at any particular time of day). It's driving me insane - does anyone
know what the hell is going on?

Apple Recalls Laptop
Batteries -- Apple has announced a voluntary recall of
certain rechargeable laptop batteries sold with, or sold separately
for use with, its 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4, and 15-inch
PowerBook G4 models from Oct-04 through May-05. The company, which
acted in cooperation with the United States Consumer Product Safety
Commission and international authorities, says the affected batteries
could overheat, posing a potential fire hazard. The batteries will be
replaced at no cost to the owner.
Foofbag: Handmade Apple Laptop Sleeves
Foofbag: Handmade Apple Laptop Sleeves
07/06/2004 03:09 PM
Simple and
somewhat stylish, depending how you feel about rainbows or flowers or
tweed, foofbags are handmade cloth sleeves for your 12-inch or 15-inch
Apple laptop. Available in 5 fabric choices, the foofbags have no
handles or zippers -- they're designed to protect your Powerbook or
iBook when it's in your bag, not be your bag. And if we all
harass the creator enough, I bet she'll start making those
complimentary iPod bags she keeps hinting at, as well. You can order
foofbags online for $29-$39 depending on size, and expect to have it
shipped anywhere in the world from Ireland (and soon, Australia!) in
10 days or less.

No 60 gb iPod according to Apple
07/20/2004 05:43 PMMy 30 gig iPod is full to the rim, and since I have been collecting
an average of 300 megs of legal non copyright infringing unknown
artist music a week, I need some more room. My wife wants the 30 I
have now, so I am hoping that Engadget is correct and think Apple is
bluffing. I can hold her off a couple of months but I am hoping that
they do have a 60 gig model in works as I will be buying one if they
do. The wife says she doesn't want a mini she wants the real deal. You
fellows out their understand what the means. [Engadget]

Should Apple Have An iPod IPO?
Should Apple Have An iPod IPO?
05/05/2004 12:04 AMBusiness Week is suggesting that, for all the congratulatory
backslapping the folks around Apple have been doing around the iPod
and iTunes, they'd be
smart to spin off their music business now. The
reasoning is that the music side of Apple probably has a much higher
perceived value than real value right now. While Apple has been able
to command considerable marketshare in both the downloadable music
market (even though they don't make any money there) and the handheld
music player market, the writer doesn't believe they can hold either
position. They've been able to get away with being the high-priced
provider so far, but competitors are nipping at their heals. Both the
hardware and the downloadable music services risk becoming commodity
products, and spinning out a portion of the business and taking the
cash would let Apple move on to the next big thing. Of course, the
main problem with this idea is that it doesn't appear that Steve Jobs
believes the market is going to become commoditized (though, the
article suggests, recent insider selling at Apple means other
executives aren't so sure).
