Fakesters are back - and paid for.... 07/09/2004 01:47 PM

danah reports....

Andy reports that all of the Anchorman characters appear on Friendster as Fakesters while a banner ad for the show runs in the advert section. Has Friendster stopped its ban on Fakesters so long as they're commissioned?

[zephoria]

Wow - somebody outa tell the Anchorman people how dead Friendster really is and what a waste of money they're throwing at it. It's nice to see Scott Sassa hussle his former colleagues, but he's gonna have to do better than that to justify his salary and Friendster's $50M+ valuation.

But wouldn't that be a trip if it turned out that Fakesters saved Friendster?

:-)

Fakesters Are Okay If They're Paying... 07/12/2004 07:08 AM
As the whole Friendster phenomenon seems to be dying out as people find other random social networks (or something entirely different) to fill their spare time, it appears Friendster is getting desperate to come up with some way to justify the somewhat ridiculous valuation they received when the VCs came crawling. There was a big fuss among some last year when Friendster started deletin g "fakester" profiles of random famous or imaginary people, claiming that such profiles had no place on the site. Well, now it turns out that they do have a place on the site if it's a big movie company paying to make sure they have a place on the site. At least that seems to be the explanation of why Friendst er is now allowing fake profiles for characters in a new Disney movie. Of course, unlike the original fakesters, which were often fun, this will come off as clear, blatant advertising, and probably won't interest too many people.

How Bad Is Paid Search?

How Bad Is Paid Search? 11/18/2003 11:30 AM
For well over a year folks at the FTC have been "concer ned" about the rise of "paid search" results, where results that are paid for are included without any indication to he end-user that these are sponsored results. Search Engine Guide takes a look at a few different search engines and de monstrates just how deceptive this is - as plenty of search engines are almost entirely made up of paid for results without indicating the monetary relationship. Of course, if the paid search results are that bad, you would think people would go elsewhere - and, there's plenty of evidence to suggest they do. Studies show that the majority of folks still use Google - who is very clear on separating paid results from straight search results.

So I'm sitting here on a wet Sunday morning and watching a video by Justin Hall. He's gone back to school - and is having a great time in LaLa.

Excerpt from a Justin poem.....

I pause during my second ginger ale and sit on a couch and wait for my date: soon after i'm surrounded by red velvet ropes and told i'll be asked to leave when the reserved party arrives

people too cool to be friendly?
a race to defrost through chemistry to reach for warmth
only out of reach from fear
a massive economy build on the fear of rejection
shaping of self for others who are all busy morphing themselves

what is sincere - the hunger
and maybe play
these are mostly willing, witting participants in identity drama for fun and profit
and maybe its their blustering confidence, their embrace of insincerity that is so defying
what do they know?
how did they choose?
what was their opening move?

this kind of analysis ignores the individuals involved

Here's a video (hlr bday mov) Justin did on Howard Rhiengold...

Forbes.com - When John Zeglis took over AT&T Wireless (NYSE:AWE - News) in 1999, it was the country's premier cell phone company. Its record-setting public offering raised $10.6 billion. Four years later the company was so battered that in February it became a meal for Cingular, a competitor that didn't even exist back then.

Get paid to stop using Linux? 11/10/2003 10:58 PM
The offer isn't from Microsoft, as you'd expect, but from our good friends at SCO. We didn't make this up. NewsForge obviously enjoys a good joke as much as anyone, but this is beyond anything our feeble imaginations could have cooked up, and the worst part is, we don't think it's meant to be a joke. It's a real story at a respected news site, not marked as "humor" or any such, under the non-funny headline, Linux Migration Incentives Planned by SCO.

MPAA Gets New Top Paid Shill

MPAA Gets New Top Paid Shill 07/01/2004 03:41 PM
Well, it's not surprising (and it might barely be worth noting), but the MPAA has officially named Dan Glickman to replace Jack Valenti as their new top paid shill. Glickman, of course, says his number one goal is to "fight piracy," rather than, say, figuring out a way to embrace new technologies to help increase the movie industry's market. Not that something like that would ever happen. While the news reports note the fact that Glickman, the former USDA secretary, is a politician more than a Hollywood insider, that's not really that newsworthy. His job is to lobby, so of course they want a political insider. Besides, he isn't completely unknown in Hollywood. In the past he's lobbied for Disney and his son is a successful movie producer. Either way, it is, as everyone expected, more of the same.

The Dot Com Freebie That Paid Off... For
The Few Who Remembered
06/02/2004 10:10 AM
In 1998 you couldn't open a browser window without finding some sort of ridiculous "free" dot com promotion - and one of the most ridiculous was a company named TravelZoo that picked up on the fact that everyone was drooling over stock options in companies, and decided to offer "free stock" in the company to anyone who signed up to use their service. It got them a ton of hype, and for about everyone was talking about them. Then, most people forgot about them - even many who signed up to get that free stock. It turns out that maybe they should have paid more attention. That free TravelZoo stock is now actually worth something - but it's too late to redeem your shares if you didn't already re-register the stock when the company moved their shares to the Nasdaq (something most people didn't do). Of course, you have to wonder why the company only seems to be so vocal about this after the date is now passed.

You decide how much it's worth to you - 50 cents, $1, $2 per minute - to have a friendly chat with your local telemarketing concern and answer a "listening comprehension" quiz afterwards. What's your conventional wisdom on this one: Are we bargaining ourselves into a win-win situation? Or are we becoming low-priced callgirls for the bottom-feeders of corporate America? We report, you decide. (via Fark< /a>)

Marqui CMS and Paid Blogging!

Marqui CMS and Paid Blogging! 04/14/2005 07:38 PM

As you all know I have been blogging for pay for Marqui for the past 4 months as that gig gets ready to come to a close I want to talk about what my feelings have been, and the feedback you all have provided.

First of all I really dug into the Marqui CMS seeing how easy or hard the application was, and if you do a search on this site for Marqui you can get me impressions. Next Marqui provided us with some very good case studies on companies that were running Marqui. They gave us access to what I assume were un-edited interviews. I covered a wide range of subjects some positive and some negative.

One thing we have always done and always will do is disclose when we are either being paid or have been provided a free software tool to try. There is news just today on advertising and content becoming blurred as their is a perception and I hope no truth to the fact that some bloggers and newsletter creators have not been fully disclosing when a financial relationship exist.

I continue to commend Marqui as they had their entire program open for the world to see. All of you took interest in the articles and also commended us for being up-front. My thoughts on the product continues to evolve and I continue to hope that Marqui introduces some blogging components to the application and make it priced in a way that would attract very small companies like mine as I could use it in a collaborative way and as a web publishing system.

They only complaint I have this round of the blogging for Marqui is the lines of communications were not as good. Marqui took the program over from the group that was managing it initially and have not really said very much in the last 30 days. I do not understand why as they were on quite a roll and had a great program, it seems this second round has not had as much sizzle.

If I were a company that was paying people like me to blog I would overload them with info, so that we would have a variety of angles to evaluate and consider our story topic instead of me writing how they should run their campaign.

Recently I had a fortune 500 company approach me, to write about a new product they were introducing, they wanted to pay me to blog but did not want me to disclose the fact I was getting paid. This would have involved writing 4 articles over a 2 month period. If I had agreed to do this, I could have paid for a dedicated server here for a year. It was real tempting considering or recent growth, thus I am consider other options to raise the $2000.00 a year that I am going need to put in place a solution that will carry us for the next 3 years.

The offer was tempting but I rejected it almost immediately. I tried to work with them on acceptable language but they would not budge and I guess if they were afraid to say they were paying me I really did not need them as a sponsors. Meanwhile I keep the deal I have made with all of you to disclose when I have been provided cash or freebies.

For those of you that have a small company and your webspaces and inter department communications are in disorder I highly recommend that you check out Marqui Content Management Systems. [Marqui]

Another Example Of Paid Content Not
Working
12/02/2003 10:21 PM
We've said plenty of times before that newspapers hoping to charge subscription fees to access their content online are going to have difficulty doing so - especially when there's nothing particularly unique about the content compared to the thousands of other (free) news sites out there. Now, Digital Deliverance points out that a couple of newspapers that went with a paid model for their online content are trying to scale it back and put up more content for free. Even more interesting, though is the story behind Ireland.com, the website of the Irish Times, which switched to paid access last year. A tiny percentage of their users signed up to pay a yearly subscription fee, but their page views dropped drastically, killing any hope for any serious ad revenue. More importantly, though, they absolutely decimated their audience. When you've done enough to find an audience, a good marketer figures out how to leverage that audience to make money - not to scare them all away by suddenly instituting a fee and hoping you catch a few suckers. There are things you can charge for online, but generally they're services that engage people - not general news content. Leveraging content to bring people back to sign up for a service makes sense. Locking up all that content does not.
