Release, Hotspot
05/27/2004 03:17 PMYour editor has been trying to sort these story out for a couple of
days: T-Mobile's hotzone powered by Comcast broadband: The problem
with a story like this is that it's been given enormous play because
it's a major city and a large area. But it's planned to be a paid
location after the first six months, and it's not particularly
interesting as a "partnership," because Comcast's role is mostly
marketing. Sure, they're bringing in bandwidth, but any Internet
provider would do. Likewise, T-Mobile has no other outdoor hotzones
that I'm aware of, and it's unclear what the point is of this one: a
trial balloon? The press release and coverage cites the fact that
Comcast customers have access to T-Mobile's hotspot service. Sure, and
so do I: the rate, as far as I can tell, is the same. Again,
marketing. I thought about not covering this at all, but it's worth
explicating the event. Meanwhile, in cities around the country,
hotzones like NewburyOpen.net in Boston and Battery Park in Manhattan
are sprouting that are commercially supported free locations designed
to be free indefinitely and focusing on areas with high appropriate
traffic....

Apple to Release iTunes for Motorola
Phones
07/27/2004 07:46 AM
Motorola and Apple have
announced a mobile iTunes music player that will allow Motorola's
upcoming 'always with you' handsets to play music purchased from the
iTunes Music Store. Although the number of songs will be limited to
the flash memory storage space inside the phones, most units should be
able to hold a few dozen songs, at least, making them the missing
piece in Apple's music playback device plan. iPod and iPod mini for
those that want a dedicated, large-capacity music device; iTunes
phones for those who just need a few songs here and there.
When the service launches in the first half of 2005, songs will be
transferred from PCs to phones via the standard USB or Bluetooth
interfaces, but hopefully later versions of iTunes Mobile will be able
to download over the airwaves. And does this mean that Motorola has
decided MP3s are the ringtones of the future? That's going to make
some people (read: carriers) a little pissy, especially considering an
iTunes download is cheaper than most ringtones.

07/07/2004 09:29 AM
Apple has
announced that the iPod mini is finally going to be shipping
internationally on July 24th. Worldwide demand has been at a fever
pitch, but Apple has previously had trouble just providing enough
units for the United States, let alone the rest of the world. Looks
like those troubles have gone away ... for now. (Not that I know
anything. I just like being ominous.)

“Safety Device”
03/31/2005 08:57 AMThe ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason
for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by
Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of
its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell
phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US
citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are
increasingly confident to travel internationally. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]

Toshiba First to Produce Speedy XDR RAM
Toshiba First to Produce Speedy XDR RAM
03/30/2005 09:10 AMXDR RAM is going to be fast. I predict even more unneeded processor
cycles in my near future.
Toshiba is lining up the world's
fasters memory chips. Testing has begun and they should be on sale in
the second half the year, the company said. The 512MB XDR (extreme
data rate) DRAM chips run at 4.8GHz - about 12 times faster than
typical desktop PC memory.
Even better, Samsung and Elpida
are on route to deliver the new chips in around the same
time-frame—just in time for use in the Playstation 3, in fact.

Thanks, Luke!)

Hitachi to produce 1 TB drives
04/04/2005 11:36 AMHitachi on Monday is set to announce it will release hard drives
containing 230 gigabits of data per square inch by 2007, making a
1-inch 20 GB microdrive, allowing for a 20 GB iPod mini.
According to senior vice president of product strategy and marketing
at Hitachi Bill Healy, the density breakthrough represents a
refinement in perpendicular recording. Hard drives currently store
data in a longitudinally, with the heads scanning over a horizontal
plane. For perpendicular recording, data bits are aligned vertically,
allowing for more data to be placed into an area.
"We're redesigning the head and disc quite significantly," Healy told
CNET. "All we have done is longitudinal recording in hard drives since
the 1950s. We've got a babysitting program running in the back to see
how the hard drives are doing. We are building up our understanding
of our quality and reliability."
How Much Data Do We Produce? And How
Much Is Spam?
How Much Data Do We Produce? And How
Much Is Spam?
07/27/2004 12:38 PMA new study from a data storage company (watch the bias) says that
we're all creating more data more rapidly thanks to ever growing hard
drives. There's no indication how they worked this out, but they do
seem to
attribute quite a bit of that data growth to spam. There's one
weird bit, suggesting that by 2007 the average email will include a
650 kb attachment. Now, certainly that would increase the amount of
data being sent around, but they give absolutely no basis for stating
such a thing. Maybe they're just counting virus spam and all the mess
it causes, but it would seem that a claim that every email will soon
be pushing that much data around should be supported by a bit more of
an explanation.

EFF helping produce anonymizing software
EFF helping produce anonymizing software
12/27/2004 10:38 AM
Cory Doctorow:
I have the coolest job: my employer, EFF, is now officially doing
development on Tor, an anonymizing network tool that lets people use
the Internet without being snooped upon:
Your traffic is safer when you use Tor, because communications are
bounced around a distributed network of servers, called onion routers.
Instead of taking a direct route from source to destination, data
packets on the Tor network take a random pathway through several
servers that cover your tracks so no observer at any single point can
tell where the data came from or where it's going. This makes it hard
for recipients, observers, and even the onion routers themselves to
figure out who and where you are. Tor's technology aims to provide
Internet users with protection against "traffic analysis," a form of
network surveillance that threatens personal anonymity and privacy,
confidential business activities and relationships, and state
security.
Traffic analysis is used every day by companies, governments, and
individuals that want to keep track of where people and organizations
go and what they do on the Internet. Instead of looking at the content
of your communications, traffic analysis tracks where your data goes
and when, as well as how big it is. For example, online advertising
company Doubleclick uses traffic analysis to record what web pages
you've visited, and can build a profile of your interests from that. A
pharmaceutical company could use traffic analysis to monitor when the
research wing of a competitor visits its website, and track what pages
or products that interest the competitor. IBM hosts a searchable
patent index, and it could keep a list of every query your company
makes. A stalker could use traffic analysis to learn whether you're in
a certain Internet cafe.
Donations to EFF are
tax-deductible -- you've got a week left to knock some bucks off your
tax bill and do some good for the whole Internet!
