Embracing Best Practice

Embracing Best Practice 06/11/2004 12:07 AM

D. Keith Robinson is Sick of Web Standards, and to a certain extent, so am I. Like Keith, I'm not sick of standards themselves; I've been using them for over two years now and couldn't conceive of developing without them. Unlike Keith, I'm not tired of advocating them - but I thoroughly believe that it's time to extend the discussion.

As web developers and designers, we face an abundance of challenges. Sites must be fast, accessible, usable, well designed, findable and search engine friendly, with smart URLs, well managed communities and maybe even a sense of humour. Most of us find ourselves taking on the role of copy editors, programmers, designers, information architects, and much, much more. In addition, we frequently run in to problems that have no correct answer (font sizing is a classic example). Trade-offs have become a way of life.

It's time to extend the discussion. Web standards are a small but vital part of a larger solution, something I like to think of as web development best practice. Let's face it: web standards are boring! Focusing discussions on them is like taking cooking lessons from a chef who only ever talks about food safety; sure they're important, but there's so much more involved in creating a decent meal.

There are plenty of benefits of re-framing web standards in the larger context of best practice. Firstly, discussions get a lot more interesting - as I've just demonstrated, there are enough facets to creating effective sites to keep us talking for years to come. Secondly, wrapping web standards in the larger context of industry best practices makes them a much easier pill to swallow. "Our site doesn't validate" is a turn-off. "Let's follow industry best practice" is far more appealing.

As a community, we need to work together to discover the best ways of doing things. We've discovered web standards: let's move forward to the other pieces of the puzzle.

While the number deployed will certainly vary from organization to organization, still there should be some rules that tend to support either a single forest or dozens.

Theory vs. Practice

Theory vs. Practice 04/15/2004 01:03 PM
The distance between theory and practice is always so much smaller in theory than in practice. I spotted this as a sig on an email from Christian Traue on Dave Farber's IP list recently and loved it. How true, and how applicable to so many areas of life, as well as recent current affairs....

Web standards: practice what you preach?

Web standards: practice what you preach? 01/28/2004 02:33 PM

This post about web standards struck a chord wih me. Because I promote TopStyle as a tool for building standards-compliant sites, I frequently get email reporting that my own site doesn't validate.

However, the reason it doesn't validate is quite simple. My site uses Atomz search, and Atomz offers proprietary elements which control how a site is indexed. For example, Atomz won't index anything wrapped in <noindex>..</noindex>. I use noindex elements on every page to skip indexing the navigation links, which causes the W3C's validator to complain that my site isn't valid XHTML. This inevitably leads to email from people calling me a hypocrite.

Now, I'm all for web standards. I've been creating sites since 1995, and I've learned the hard way how writing browser-specific code leads to problems down the road. However, I consider standards-compliance a goal, not a requirement. Limiting the usefulness of my site's search feature just to make it 100% valid XHTML seems way over the top. Standards-compliance isn't an uncomprising religion, but rather a practical business decision that must be weighed alongside the other goals of your site.

Journal of Research Practice (JRP)

Journal of Research Practice (JRP) 03/19/2005 02:27 AM
Journal of Research Practice (JRP)
http://jrp.icaap.org/

The Journal of Research Practice (JRP) seeks to develop our understanding of research as a type of practice, so as to extend and enhance that practice in the future. The Journal aims to highlight the dynamics of research practice, as it unfolds in the life of a researcher, in the growth and decline of a field, and in relation to a changing social and institutional environment. The Journal welcomes deliberation on the basic issues and challenges encountered by researchers in any specific domain. The Journal aims to explore why and how different activities, criteria, methods, and languages become part of research practice in any domain. This is expected to trigger inter-disciplinary dialogue, mutual learning, facilitate research education, and promote innovations in different fields. The Journal's scope is not defined in terms of academic disciplines. It cuts across disciplines and fields by drawing out the living dimensions of research unfolding through history, culture, research communities, professions, and of course the lives of individual researchers. The Journal seeks to study the evolving patterns of thinking and practice that underlie open inquiry in any domain. The scope also includes topics such as research training, research design, research utilisation, research policy, and innovative forms of research. The Journal targets all researchers, scholars, research-inclined professionals, and research students, irrespective of their disciplinary background. It seeks to attract reflective articles on the dynamics and challenges of research practice in context, as well as articles presenting experiences and learning from research carried out in an innovative way. In order to promote wider participation in these deliberations, JRP will be published electronically in the open-access mode. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer Information Blog.
