SETI@Vatican 05/13/2004 05:10 AM
The Vatican's official astronomer, Brother Guy Consolmagno, has given an interview in which he discusses the Vatican's thinking on what to do if alien intelligence is discovered.
We find an intelligent civilization and there's no way in creation we can communicate with them because they're so alien to us. We can't talk to dolphins now. In which case, we'll never know.

Second scenario: We find the intelligent civilization. We can communicate. We discover that they have the two essentials that theologians talk about for the human soul, intelligence and free will. They know who they are, they're self-aware, and they're able to do something about it. I think dogs are self-aware, but they don't have a whole lot of free will. Maybe computers are the same sort of thing. Human beings have to have both...

A third scenario: We find a dozen civilizations out there, and a bunch of Jehovah's witnesses go up and convert them all. At the end of the day, every civilization is Christian, except the human race is still not too sure about this. I mean, anything's possible.

The Vatican vs. Dan Brown

The Vatican vs. Dan Brown 03/17/2005 03:56 AM
David Pescovitz: The Vatican has appointed Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone to speak out against Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. From Reuters:
Cardinal"A lot of novels do good but this book is rotten food ... it does harm, not good," Bertone said in the 30-minute interview in the offices of the Vatican's doctrinal department.

"This book is a sack full of lies against the Church, against the real history of Christianity and against Christ himself," said Bertone, archbishop of northern Genoa.... "I would ask the author of this book and similar ones to be more respectful because freedom of expression has limits when it does not respect others," he said...

Bertone said he was stunned that Catholic bookstores, even those near the Vatican, were selling the book.

"It's impossible to pull the book off shelves of general bookstores ... but certainly not selling it in Catholic bookstores would be a good first step," he said.

The Vatican Jumps the Shark 07/31/2004 07:17 PM
The Pope to Women: “get back in your place” — The Vatican, fearing it may still share some semblance of the same reality as the rest of us seeks to rectify this problem by telling women that they should stop hoping for the same things as men have.

“The obscuring of the difference or duality of the sexes has enormous consequences on a variety of levels,” the document said, asserting it has inspired ideologies that “call into question the family, in its natural two-parent structure of mother and father.”

It also warned of challenges to fundamentals of church teaching, saying the blurring of differences “would consider as lacking in importance and relevance the fact that the Son of God assumed human nature in its male form.”
