Eating Crow

Eating Crow 12/15/2003 11:47 AM
Last week, a PC Mag writer used a single Mac OS X security issue as evidence that the Mac platform is as vulnerable to attack and viruses as Windows. Now, Richard Forno, the former Chief Security Officer at Network Solutions has written a response in which he addresses factual errors in the PC Mag article, points out several reasons why OS X is inherently more secure than Windows, and at one point suggests the original author is propagating a narrow-minded extremist view. The fact is, Mac OS...

Do Most People Even Know What They're
Eating?

Do Most People Even Know What They're
Eating?
01/24/2004 12:12 AM
Do Most People Even Know What They're Eating? Pork is served as veal; tilapia as red snapper and who knows what goes into sausages and other processed meat and fish products? You don't have to be an observant Jew or Muslim to be worried. How many years have those chicken pieces been frozen? How much pork and beef have been added to them? As food is increasingly disguised (fish fingers, chicken nuggets, beefburgers) to hide its origins, feeding on hypocritical popular revulsion with animals' existence, death - and carcasses! - aren't consumers setting themselves up for an ever greater measure of food fraud? That is, if they still care. (And no, it's not just an American phenomenon.) [Via The Daily Gullet. ]

FreeRoller eating threads.

FreeRoller eating threads. 03/11/2003 11:53 AM

FreeRoller keeps on running out of threads to process incoming requests. This could be a problem in Roller, but I suspect that we may have run up against this bug in the Tomcat 4.0.X HTTP connector:

BUG5735: HTTP connector running out of processors under heavy load

The bug is marked as fixed, but I think that means the fix is in the new Tomcat 4.1.X Coyote HTTP connections.

Next time this happens, I'll try Glen Nielson's advice (from the bug report):
I would recommend that you dump the stack for all running threads when
you experience this problem. This can help identify what is causing
the
problem. By reviewing the stack dump for each thread you can determine
whether the problem is due to Tomcat or your application.

On unix you do a kill -QUIT {tomcat java pid) to cause the thread
stack's
to be dumped to catalina .out.

A Processor for Tomcat runs your application code, delays in your code
can cause additional processor threads to be created to handle new
requests.
Possible application or configuration problems which can delay
requests:

Connection delays due to networked services such as a db.
Connection delays due to running out of pooled resources.
   Thread synchronization deadlocks.
A cascading affect where many new processors get created due to
excessively long JVM Garbage Collections. start java with
   -verbose:gc to detect this.

Secrecy Eating At Apple

Secrecy Eating At Apple 06/25/2004 10:30 AM
Apple's "loose lips sink ships" attitude works well for its consumer market. But in the serious world of corporate IT, CIOs seldom make infrastructure investments without a deep understanding of a vendor's long-term strategy. And Apple refues to reveal much, if anything, about its plans. By Mark Hall, Computerworld (via MyAppleMenu)

Eating on a Saturday night

Eating on a Saturday night 04/17/2005 06:52 PM
I've been doing a fairly good job of eating at lots of yummy places while here in Paris. Obviously I've been doing a fairly crappy job of documenting those meals, mostly out of sheer laziness. But last night we decided to eat in for a change, and to soften the repeated blows my wallet has taken during this trip. To turn the documentation tide, I present a photo of what we had for dinner on Saturday night. For our shopping, we decided we'd head to La Grande Epicerie Paris, the amazing food market at The Bon Marché -- one of Paris' grand department stores. We started in the wine section and being, in reality, poser gourmands and wine afficionados, we just grabbed two bottles that looked good and tried to escape before the woman started speaking to us in French about wine. My French class hasn't gotten to that level of interaction yet, and I wasn't up to the challenge. The take? A half bottle of Domaine Pradelle Crozes-Hermitage, 2002 (white) and a full size 2000 Saint-Joseph from Ferraton Père & Fils. Where they good? Seemed so to us. We're pretty much happy with anything from the Rhône. Next stop, the meat counter where we procured some mousse de canard. Somehow I managed to leave it out of the nice photo, so here it is just tossed on a plate. Then, on to the cheese counter! Here we were at a loss as there were just too many cheeses to choose from. Though I have French Cheeses: The Visual Guide to More Than 350 Cheeses from Every Region of France, it was no use among the vast selection (because I didn't have it with me and hadn't memorized it all, yet...). So I used my every-improving French to explain our predicament to Madame la Fromagière: (In French, sort of)Madame, we do not know the cheeses well of France. Is it possible that you make a selection of three cheeses for us to know more the cheese? Of course!, she replied, quite happy to be put to such a test. So she asked a few more questions and we ended up with a Brie de Meaux, a Comté Rivoire, and a bouton Charolai which was a button of a lovely aged goat cheese. They were all excellent, and Madame chose well for us. The Charolai was my favorite new cheese in a long time. We had also picked up a saucisson sec aux myrtilles, a dry sausage with a blueberry(!) coating. It was good, but didn't have much blueberry flavor. And of course, the requisite baguettes upon which to spread our yummy cheese and mousse. It was tasty and easy and I have to say, I want to do it again very soon!

Ecobot II: A Fly-eating Robot

Ecobot II: A Fly-eating Robot 09/12/2004 12:17 PM
Researchers at the University of the West of England in Bristol have developed a new, carnivorous robot, called Ecobot II, that eats and digests flies for power. The researchers are working on "release and forget" robots that can find their own power sources after being deployed. This is the same team who developed the well-known Ecobot I (aka Slugbot) that ate and digested slugs for power. Expect more carnivorous robots in the future. Ecobot II is an improvment but still takes 12 minutes of digestion to generate enough energy to move forward 2 cm. And Ecobot doesn't smell too nice either, since it's digestion process relies on human sewage for the bacteria needed. For more, see the stories in NewScientist.com, Newsfactor, Scotsman.com, and the discussion on Slashdot.

Eating frog legs = cannibalism?

Eating frog legs = cannibalism? 07/01/2004 08:51 AM
Irania n woman 'gives birth to frog' (BBC) "While it is unclear how this could have happened, the [Iranian] paper carries quotes from medical experts who say there are human characteristics to the animal....Medical history recounts stories of people who believed they had frogs - or even lizards or snakes - living and growing in their bodies....One of the most famous was the 17th Century case of Catharina Geisslerin, known as "the toad-vomiting woman" of Germany. " Could this be connected to that 20 pound carp's apocalyptic warnings spouted in Hebrew, last year, as a fish cutter tried to club it to death with a rubber hammer to make it into gefilte fish? Or, maybe it was those new tomatoes? Or an Old Testament thing, maybe a prophecy?
