Winwood: Roll With P2P, Baby 07/09/2004 04:44 AM

Grammy-winning rocker Steve Winwood took an unusual step to promote his latest album when he voluntarily released a song over peer-to-peer networks. So far, the experiment has enhanced record sales. By Katie Dean.

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AM
Cory Doctorow: A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with input from maternity wards.

That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no medical endorsement of these products).

Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a "free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.

On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines, having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph of both...

...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family. They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her name and birthdate and your full name and address...

Growing Family will use your information from time to time to promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.

Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to their dead daughter. Link (via A Whole Lotta Nothing)

Just last month, I was griping about Apple’s complete lack of transparency. As if to prove me wrong, Dave Hyatt, the main Safari man, has recently revivified his blog with a series of excellent pieces about plowing his way through the Web Standards Project’s Acid2 compliance test. He’s pushing back where parts of the test seem questionable, which is totally appropriate. Then, yesterday, he did a just-the-facts post about Safari 1.3, which you get with OS X 10.3.9. I’ve been happily alternating between Camino and Firefox, but will definitely give Safari another try.

Tomorrow night's edition of "Nightline&quo t; on ABC will be a departure from the norm: the entire program will consist of Ted Koppel reading the names and showing the pictures of more than 700 US servicemembers killed in Iraq since March 19, 2003. Here's an interview with the Nightline executive producer whose idea it was. The idea is not without controversy: Lisa de Moraes of the WaPo decries it as "a cheap, content-free stunt designed to tug at our heartstrings and bag a big number on the second night of the May ratings race." (Is this really Nielsen-bait?) And the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns eight ABC affiliates, is refusing to air the broadcast, calling it "motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq."

Newsweek's Brian Braiker says,
This is a story i wrote this week about Pete the Porno Puppet, a truly bizarro PSA campaign that XXXchurch ("the #1 Christian porn site") launched -- it's an ad designed to convince parents to get rid of their porn stash so that children aren't exposed to it. The irony is that the anti-porn ad was filmed by smut peddler Jimmy D. Also, it's creepy as all getout.
Indeed. When I first ran accross the site a month or two ago, I was surprised to see they were (without permission) posting excerpts from an article< /a> about Hustler publisher Larry Flynt that I wrote for Wired News. Seeing your work snipped out of context to promote a political agenda you're not part of is almost as disturbing as... um... a talking, evangelical sock puppet that wants your porn.

BitTorrent v4.0.1

BitTorrent v4.0.1 03/25/2005 09:08 PM
BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. BitTorrent Will Not Go Away

BitTorrent Will Not Go Away 03/17/2005 03:08 AM
There was an article I read in Yahoo News from the Washington Post on BitTorrents. It explains that too many legit uses exist for BitTorrent for the service to be shut down. The MPAA is admitting that there are good and bad uses for BitTorrent and that they will only go after people that are helping users to download illegal movies. It's good to see a mianstream media outlet like the Washington Post understand the real concept and design behind BitTorrents.

This represents a shift from previous practices, in which the MPAA, the Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites) and other groups have tried to have entire products -- for example, the first Diamond Rio MP3 player or the networked ReplayTV (news - web sites) video recorder -- taken off the market. One reason for this change of heart may be that in BitTorrent, unlike many other file-sharing programs, legitimate use doesn't amount to a token minority. It's central to this program's existence. Developers of versions of the Linux (news - web sites) operating system were some of the first to jump on BitTorrent as a way to ship out vast amounts of data. A Linux distribution can easily span four CD-ROMs; instead, companies such as Red Hat offer BitTorrent downloads of their work.
