Paint the whole 'lith with a rainbow...
04/09/2004 03:54 PMRight. That's it. Enough already! I'm just going to go and launch
the damn thing and let everyone else find all the bugs and the crappy
bits of code and the hacked together bits of shit and I'll fix em all
later when I've had a bit of a break. Otherwise it's going to suck up
every last bit of my life forever as I fiddle and fuss around some of
the obscurer areas when I should be throwing enough people at it and
see how many land on something spiky.
So with that in mind, I'm here to announce the 87% complete new
version of Barbelith - the
online community that actually doesn't just talk shit all day
(although it does that too). As ever with a redesign it's got a good
few rough edges that will get worn into shape over time. Unlike most
redesigns that I've been involved with it's also full of really bad
code and there are places where the new lick of paint could do with a
couple of more coats. But then again, unlike most commercial redesigns
of any scale, this one took four weekends from start to finish. I am
sooo looking forward to going outside again. Anyway - have a
poke around - be nice to the locals and feel free to leave your
thoughts:

Behr paint redux
Behr paint redux
01/07/2004 05:04 PMLast night my Radio blog stopped working - so I didn't get a chance
to post this image from the Behr paint Laszlo app.
It's so cool I decided to make it into it's own post.

Check it out folks - it's truley revolutionary. We all know it can
be done. But they've done it! Laszlo has gone beyond HTML -
bringing a whole new world of possibilities to the web. You'd be
wrong in not checking out Laszlo. It was important for Macromedia to
rip off and copy.
:-)
Laszlo combined with FOAF combined with blogging, with a little
eCommerce and IM thrown in for fun - is gonna rock teh house in
2004!

Analysts at research firm IDC predict this segment will make up a big

Inverse graffiti: use cleaning solvent,

06/28/2004 05:07 AMA Yorkshire graffiti writer has come up with a really clever writing
technique: he lays a template with his tag over a dirty wall, then
sprays the template with solvent, leaving behind a clean patch bearing
his message. It's inverse graffiti -- he's selectively cleaning up
dirty walls.
He decided to commercialize the process and tagged Smirnoff ads in
Leeds, and that's where he got into trouble: he's been ordered to
"remove" the clean patch of wall and get rid of the ad.

Backporting from Python 2.3 to Python

Backporting from Python 2.3 to Python
2.2
06/08/2004 11:18 PMWe have a home-grown templating system at work, which I
intend to dedicate an entry to some time in the future. We originally
wrote it in Python 2.2, but upgraded to Python 2.3 a while ago and
have since been evolving our code in that environment. Today I found a
need to load the most recent version of our templating system on to a
small, long neglected application that had been running the original
version ever since it had enough features to be usable.
Unfortunately, this application was running on a server
that only had Python 2.2. Installing Python 2.3 would have been
somewhat more painful here than on other servers we run for reasons I
won't go in to, so I decided to have a go at getting our current code
to run under the older Python version.
In the end, I only had to make three minor changes, all at
the top of the file in question.
I added from __future__ import
generators as the very first line of the file. We use
generators (with the yield statement) in a
few places - this feature was only properly added in Python 2.3, but
was made available in Python 2.2 as a "future enhancement" through the
aforementioned obscure import.
I added True, False = 1,
0 on the next line down. Surprisingly, Python 2.2 had no
support for a boolean type and instead used a test for non-zero
instead. The above line defines constants that behave enough like
Python 2.3's True and False to avoid any problems.
I defined an enumerate
function, which was introduced for real in Python 2.3. Here's the code
I used:
def enumerate(obj):
for i, item in zip(range(len(obj)), obj):
yield i, item
All in all it only took around ten minutes to put the
above together, after which the script worked just fine. It was
interesting to see how our code had grown to rely on Python 2.3
features without us realising it.

Nanotechnology Precaution Is Urged
07/29/2004 11:58 PMThe invisibly small particles and fibers that scientists are producing
in the hot new field of nanotechnology pose health and environmental
risks great enough to justify banning, for now, certain cosmetics now
found on the U.S. market and also halting the deliberate release of
nanomaterials into the environment, according to an independent report
commissioned by the British government.
Most products of nanotechnology, including atom-scale electronic
components and super-strong materials, will probably prove harmless,
the report concludes, offering a modicum of reassurance for the
nascent research field that has been buffeted by science-fiction
scenarios of techno-doom. But the joint report by Britain's Royal
Society and Royal Academy of Engineering also strongly warns that the
manufactured specks at the heart of nanotechnology -- tens of
thousands of which can fit on the tip of a needle -- behave in
unpredictable ways and in some cases appear surprisingly toxic.

While fur is typically associated with
staying warm, the stylish new material covering Apple's planned Power
Mac GX will improve on the cooling technology used in the current
generation of the Power Mac G5. The Power Mac GX machines are rumored
to be whisper quiet, and, while it's unclear if there is simply no
need for a fan or if the fur has sound-dampening properties beyond its
cooling properties, the quiet operation is expected to be
well-received by sound- and video-processing users. Evidently, Apple's
high level of R&D investment paid off with a bit of bio-inspired
nanotechnology (patent-pending, of course). The fur coating - which
Apple will undoubtedly label with a clever marketing name (Apple
engineers are rumored to call it "iFuzz" internally) -
actually pumps heat away from the processor and case interior with
hundreds of microfluidic tubules into each individual
"hair." The fluid cooling is similar to that used in the
current dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 models, albeit orders of magnitude
more sophisticated.
