Caller ID Spoofing... For Businesses

Caller ID Spoofing... For Businesses 08/27/2004 07:01 PM
Forget spoofed email headers, a new company has been set up to help companies spoof the caller ID. The product is focused at collections agencies and private investigators, who can call a deadbeat up pretending to be someone they know to get them to answer the phone. The company insists they just want to target those types of customers, but I imagine some telemarketers would enjoy using such a tool. Meanwhile, there are some questions on legality. One person notes that it doesn't appear to break any laws -- but someone else points out that there are rules against collections agencies misrepresenting themselves. And, of course, as soon as this becomes popular, someone will pass a law banning caller ID spoofing.

Caller ID Spoofing Service

Caller ID Spoofing Service 08/31/2004 05:56 AM

My wife and I made a decision nearly 2 years ago to no longer pay for Caller ID. I was initially against it but in the long run I have not missed it. All of the important calls come in on the cell anyway. For those of you that have Caller ID a new spoofing service is out their. I would imagine for stalkers and prank callers this service will be valuable but I just don't understand why you would want to legitimately spoof your caller ID. [ZDNet]

Caller ID Spoofing Business Owner Bails
Out Following Death Threats
09/04/2004 12:59 AM
Last week, we had mentioned the story of a company that was offering calle r ID spoofing for collections agencies and private investigators. Earlier this week, the company officially launched the solution and the press went wild... as did many angry people, apparently. The guy behind the business says he's been inundated with angry calls and emails, and even had a death threat taped to his door. The anger apparently isn't so much about the fact that he'll be spoofing phone numbers, but that he's basically revealing this technology commercially that was previously only used by hackers and crackers, who now feel he's somehow selling out. In fact, the response has been so crazy that he has decided to sell the business -- though, the stories of death threats probably won't do much good for the selling price, which makes this whole story seem a bit odd. Why not just shut down the service? If people are really pissed that he's making money off of this, won't selling it off be just as bad? Something doesn't seem right about the whole story.

OS X update has Bluetooth caller ID 05/27/2004 05:07 PM
Gadget Lab's Brian Lam sez: "I noticed that you covered blue phonemenu in the past, so figured I'd drop a line about the new os x panther update. I was just reading the update details and saw this :

"Dialog windows for incoming phone calls and SMS messages for a paired Bluetooth phone now appear in the foreground."

I just tested it. You have to pair your bluetooth phone in address book, and a little pop up comes up, like bluephonemenu. The dialog choices are: add card/log call, sms reply, hang up, answer.

Log call puts the time and date of the call in the address book entry

Unfortunately, the pop up box doesn't show an image of the person calling - that would be freakin' cool

For SMS, the pop-up box has the dialog choices: log sms, reply, and ok.

It's pretty good, and stable, but doesn't sit in the system tray like bluephonemenu. Link

Bogus-ify your outgoing caller ID

Bogus-ify your outgoing caller ID 08/31/2004 01:06 AM
Xeni Jardin: Ahoy, stalkers, crank yankers, and evil telemarketer scumbags! Beginning this Wednesday, September 1, US-based online company Star38.com will offer paying subscribers a Caller ID falsification service. Make-believe you're the White House! Or 1-800-CALL-ATT! Or, hell, get your '80s on and vamp out in 867-5309! Kevin Poulsen of SecurityFocus tried it out, and evidently the service checked out as providing what it promised. Users complete an online form with phone number, number they want to call, number they want to appear to be calling from; in a couple of seconds, the system rings back to patch them through to their call destination. But, like, in a secret numeric disguise: call recipients see the spoofed number displayed on Caller ID. Link to Register article (via /., which contains some interesting debate from readers over whether or not the system is a truly effective spoofing mechanism)

Caller ID Hackable in VOIP Systems

Caller ID Hackable in VOIP Systems 07/07/2004 04:14 PM
The softswitches that route VOIP calls get caller ID info off the PSTN (public switched telephone network), but they don't play by the PSTN's FCC-mandated rules. Those rules make regulated telcos validate that caller ID and block it if requested. Which is why, if you get a call from an IP phone network, you can't trust the caller ID; it may be spoofed. Worse, you can't trust your own caller ID to be blocked if you're calling an IP phone.

Developer Reel Intelligence has released BluePhoneMenu, which adds Caller ID for one or more Bluetooth-equipped cell phones to your Mac. It alerts you to incoming calls and keeps track of calls received, listing names, times and which phones received them. It can also monitor the signal strength and remaining battery power of your phones, as well as alert you to new voice messages and tell you if your phones are on silent mode or off the hook. BluePhoneMenu is free and requires Mac OS X v.10.3 "Panther" or higher and a Bluetooth adapter or a Bluetooth-enabled Mac.

Harassed entrepreneur behind "bogusify
your caller-ID" shuts down
09/05/2004 11:26 AM
Xeni Jardin: Remember that caller-ID-spoofing service we blogged about here in August? Turns out the founder is pulling the plug on his venture after death threats, phone taps, and malicious hacks that involved strangers discovering how much money he'd just deposited into his checking account.
Three days after the start-up company Star38 began offering a service that fools caller ID systems, the founder, Jason Jepson, has decided to sell the business. Mr. Jepson said he had received harassing e-mail and phone messages and even a death threat taped to his front door - all he said from people opposed to his publicizing a commercial version of technology that until now has been mainly used by software programmers and the computer hackers' underground.

For a fee, customers using the Star38.com Web site would be able to alter the number that would appear on the caller ID screen of the recipient's phone. The technique could mask the identity of a bill collector, for example, or enable a private investigator to fool someone into answering the phone on the false belief that a friend or relative was ringing

Microsoft Faces Lawsuit Over Caller ID
for E-Mail
08/12/2004 02:38 PM
A new patent battle is brewing -- this time over Microsoft's claim over Caller ID for E-Mail. F. Scott Deaver, owner of Failsafe Designs, says Microsoft is guilty of the "outright theft" of his product name and intellectual property (IP), and will seek legal and financial redress from the Redmond, Wash., software giant and anyone else that uses his technology that verifies e-mail is coming from the domain it claims.

If that happens, it's sure to put a monkey wrench in the deployment of the Sender ID specification, which is a combination of Microsoft's Caller ID for E-Mail specification and the Sender Policy Framework (SPF), worldwide to combat one of the avenues used by spammers. The technology used in Caller ID for E-Mail is part of a specification called Sender ID currently under review by an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) working group as a proposed Internet standard to eliminate the use of spoofed e-mail addresses found in many of today's spam messages.

Torino, Italy-based Ovolab on Tuesday released version 1.5 of its Phlink telephony product for the Macintosh. The new version of the software, demoed at this week's Apple Expo in Paris, adds network caller ID support, or what Ovolab calls "Applevous:" The ability to automatically broadcast caller information over the local network. A translucent window with information about the caller pops up on the screen of the Mac directly connected to the Phlink telephony device, or other Macs on the same network. Phlink can also answer telephone calls, record messages and store them on your Mac's hard drive.
