When I go on the road my laptop has a 40 Gig drive but that is just
not enough and I carry a 60 Gig Firewire external just to have all of
my data with me. Finally someone has developed a 100 gig 2.5 inch
hard-drive. Time will tell how these will perform. Japanese techies
are going to get a shot at them first but they will not be cheap. [Engadget]

The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives. Read -

Lite-On 4x DVDRW drive to 8x, double layer DVDRW drive possible
Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras
announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as
their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard
drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool
and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are
the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because
they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support
this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to
hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get
something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500,
though).
Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps
in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Walmart puts out an ultra-cheap laptop for under $600.
It's an ECS
A535, and comes with an Athlon 1.6GHz processor, 14" screen,
wireless networking, and XP Home Edition.
As expected, Walmart continues its push of
cheap imports with little regard for anything but its own bottom
line.
I guess it's good for the US economy in one respect; cheap hardware
like this will undoubtedly keep support guys plenty busy. And at that
price you might as well buy two; one for a backup or for spare
parts.
Top Tip: Networking between PDA and laptop?05/06/2004 01:23 AM I have an emachines m6805 laptop and a toshiba e800 pda. Both have

wirelessly? Is this a new or not well discussed concept? Can two
laptops communicate wirelessly for that matter?
Chris
Null over at Mobile PC Mag does another great follow up to his Top 100 Gadgets of All Time, this
time detailing the history of the portable computer, from the IBM 5100
Portable Computer pictured here, up to the first modern laptops. It's
a tear-jerker for those of us who lived through this era, seeing old
friends like the Compaq luggable (mine had more wonky than usual
floppy drives) and catching a glimpse of a few I'd not known
about.
It also inspired me to keep on with my current tinkering project
goal (which let me tell you, is way beyond my limited
abilities): getting an Epson HX-20 laptop online via serial cable ->
IR -> cellphone. Of course, I've got to buy a working HX-20 first, and
every time I mention it on here, you bastards go out and outbid me on
all the eBay sales. Stop that.

The death of the laptop? Not quite yet
The death of the laptop? Not quite yet12/09/2003 12:07 PM Weird. Not one, but two remarkably similar articles last week (one by
Duncan Martell of Reuters, the other by Kevin Laws of VentureBlog),
about how...
I have been using laptops primarily for the past few years and now
I am planning to
return to desktops. Why? Because laptops are difficult
to upgrade and
I am tired of paying too much to replace broken parts or batteries
dying over time.
The control key on my current laptop, a Dell Inspiron 8000, is
sticky and I can't
fix it without sending my laptop off. Fans (yup, it has two)
and hard drives
turning on and off is annoying too.
I have been eyeing the 17-inch PowerBook but Windows is my primary
target environment
so I can't just replace my laptop with the PowerBook. So I am
going to get a
desktop, not the most powerful one available, but one that hits the
Sweet Spot.
I think that means 3.2 GHz Pentium 4. So far I am looking at
Dell Dimension
8300 with 2 gig of memory, 400G disk. Since I am
addicted to 1600x1200
resolution and LCD (read ClearType), I'll have to get one of those
20-inch LCD and
match that with Radeon 9800 GPU. Even with fastest optical
drives (CD/DVD-RW),
total cost is around $2400 which is pretty good deal I think.
Only problem is that the price keeps dropping. Longer I hold
off on getting
it, the cheaper it gets. It's amazing that with such a strong
incentive not
to press the submit button, the computer industry still humms
along. How crazy
is that?
After I finish making the transition to the desktop, maybe I'll get
the PowerBook
(why the heck does it support only 1440x900?) with the excuse that
I'll be writing
some OS X software. At least that's the line I am going to
use on my wife. OS
X software market is going to explode, honey!

IO Data Device has come up with another hum-dinger.
If you were to put an enormous hard drive inside a USB 2.0/FireWire
casing, give it some blue LEDs, and add a USB port, you'd end up with
the 400GB "UDH-UEH400." Not only does it connect by USB (or FireWire),
but it has a USB port. If you're like me and have a single
USB port on your computer, you certainly wouldn't want it being taken
up by just a hard drive. Yeah, I know daisy chaining has been around
for years and years with SCSI (and thus FireWire, its distant cousin),
but I think this is one of the first applications of it I've seen in
USB form. Somehow, it can even recognize USB devices if you connect
the drive by FireWire. Don't ask me how that works; I didn't realize
something like that was even possible.

with Oxford Semiconductor and affected drive manufacturers to resolve
this issue which resides in the Oxford 922 chip-set. In the interim,
Apple recommends that you do not use these drives. To stop using the
