WirelessUnleashed Launches

WirelessUnleashed Launches 06/04/2004 09:08 AM
Earlier this week, with a little help from my friends, I launched a WirelessUnleashed, a group weblog on unlicensed wireless issues.  Between getting this online and Supernova planning, I've been so busy that I neglected to post a pointer here!

The site focuses on the benefits of reallocating low-frequency wireless capacity from broadcasting to unlicensed applications, both here and around the world.  There is a huge amount of capacity which could be used for two-way applications like broadband to the home, but which is locked up in broadcast allocations based on 1950s technology.  Freeing it up could create massive opportunities for innovation, and could dramatically lower the costs of wireless connectivity in developing countries.

My co-conspirators are Clay Shirky, Andrew Odlyzko, and David Isenberg. It's not often you find the brainpower that these three bring to the table in one place.

Sputnik Launches!

Sputnik Launches! 01/07/2004 05:29 PM

I'm extremely proud to herald the launch of Sputnik's newest product set, Sputnik Central Control 2.2 and the award-winning AP 120 WiFi Access Point. These products have made it to the light of day after thousands of man-hours of testing and real-world use, bugs and bug-fixes, dozens of deployments, new feature enhancements, and hundreds of hours spent listening and working with customers and partners.

These products make it easy for Wireless ISPs, Hotspot operators, and IT Services companies to roll out managed, authenticated wireless access. At $185 per AP, the Sputnik AP 120 (bu y) is one half to one fifth the price of wireless Access Points with equivalent features. The Access Point is completely managable centrally - everything from initial provisioning to ongoing maintenance and firmware upgrades, can be done centrally. Sputnik Central Control (bu y) acts as the centralized management console, and the $895 price includes a software license to manage up to 20 Access Points. Additional licensing packs are available as well. Add it all up, and the complete Sputnik system is at least one half to one tenth the price of similar solutions. Sputnik even offers completely free licensing for community wireless groups - making it easy to start and manage a community wireless network.

Here's what some customers are saying:

Chad M. Smith of Washington Broadband, Inc: I want to thank you for your support and providing such an excellent solution. We have researched for months for a solution like yours. I have even attempted developing our own with little success. Since the database and cgi is "open" we will have no problems integrating Sputnik into our billing system. We will definitely be purchasing your products in the short term.

Craig Fine, director of sales for Softmatrix: It would have been really difficult without Sputnik because there's not really a solution that lets you manage multiple hot spots with one server.

How do they do that?

Here's the scoop: Sputnik Central Control and the AP120 were built from the ground up with the conviction that you could have commodity hardware pricing and enterprise-class management. And because Sputnik built itself up organically, without Venture Capitalist funding, we are able to offer the products at a radically lower price point than our competitors. Everyone said "It can't be done." But we put our heads together and came up with a completely different approach from everyone else in the industry - and we have happy customers who are using the system every day. Here's what the architecture looks like:

Don't just take my word for it - LinuxDevices took a thorough look at the system, and came away impressed:

The Sputnik Agent provides all of the manageability hooks that enable automatic configuration, dynamic firewalling, multiple captive portal redirects, policy routing, centralized management, and end-user tracking.

Wi-Fi Networking News, the leading trade publication covering Wi-Fi and IEEE 802.11 standards liked what they saw:

With Sputnik's server software and access points (APs) that include Sputnik edge software, operators get centralized network management functions with usage analysis, security, AP provisioning, and an end user interface.

All this adds up to secure, managed wireless networking with lower capital costs, lower operating costs and greater flexibility than any alternative. See how people are using Sputnik technology in a variety of situations, like WISPs and Hot Spot Providers.

Sputnik is talking with select VARs and System Integrators. If you're interested in reselling the Sputnik system, send an email to partners@sputnik.com, but you'd better hurry - we're getting overwhelmed with requests.

I'm incredibly honored to have worked with the talented team of industry veterans at Sputnik. Everyone has worked their butts off to create a system built around user requests - an inexpensive, centrally managed, plug-and-play Wi-Fi system that provides group policy and access control - and one that could be plugged directly into a corporate LAN - no need for special VLANs or convoluted network architecture, just a dynamic firewall at each ingress/egress point in your network, all acting in unison, as part of a "hive mind".

:-) Anyway - congrats anyway - WhizSpark really picks up where UpComing.org leaves off.

BTW Does anybody know anything about this site at: OpenEvents.com? The copyright is 2002. No evidence there's any sign of life there.

Here's Peter's post.....

The New WhizSpark is Launched!
Many of you have noticed that we have relaunched WhizSpark, but I am slowly talking about what we have done via my blog, rather than having one big announcement that the new WhizSpark is out. The "EXTRA! EXTRA! days of big website launch announcements, imho, is passe. Although, we want our subscriber base to take off, unlike many social networking sites, our revenue is not based on getting everyone and their mother registered (although it could help). Nevertheless, the main reason that I am pushing it out slowly is because there are so many features that we've developed and so many ways that people can derive value from them, that I could never include it in one post. Additionally, by talking about one feature at a time, it allows me to solicit advice and feedback from my extended group of blogging friends. (Plus, instead of focussing on PR, we are focussing on constantly improving our product and sales.)

Which is why I am building a entrepreneur feedback and favor exchange group.

HP launches H[i]Pods

HP launches H[i]Pods 08/30/2004 02:07 PM
Hewlett Packard are continuing their move into Digital Media markets with the launch of a HP branded Apple iPod. The devices come in variety of wacky colours, and are being launched with 20 gig and 40 gig hard drives inside them. The devices offer USB and Firewire connectivity, and will be sold at a comparable (read : the same) price to Apple.

Much had been speculated since HP announced its partnership with Apple, earlier this year, as to what they might do with the devices. More specifically, whether they'd make any changes or additions to the gear. The answer? Absolutely not. HP have not added WMA support to the iPods, which might have added some value to the iPods. The only addition that appears to have been made is "Printable Tattoos", allowing users to download, print, and deploy logos onto their iPods (HP claims they are easy to remove, yet at the same time are able to offer serious protection to the iPod from bumps etc).

With 8 months development time, HP have added little to Apple's product asides from an apparently poorly coded ActiveX plug-in for Windows Media Player. A very sorry story, making one wonder why people would buy the product from HP when they’d get exactly the same deal from Apple. The answer is unclear. However, HP's corporate logo of 'invent' really doesn't do this make over job justice.

ourmedia.jpgWe tend to stay away from software and service websites, but OurMedia.org looks to have a lot of promise and we'd like to point it out. The concept is simple: upload any media, under a variety of open licenses, to be archived and stored, for free, forever. That means you could host your podcasts and images and homemade whatever on their servers, as long as you're willing for the rest of the world to see them. Definitely a project to keep an eye on. If nothing else, it's a one-stop shop to load up all these media gadgets.

VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B

VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B 03/06/2004 01:56 AM
2003 was a remarkable year in the US for voice over the internet (VoIP). If you needed a label for the events of the year, "Collapse of Denial" would be a good one -- after a long period of relative inaction, the FCC and the state regulators are suddenly pushing hard for a regulatory framework. The question is no longer whether voice is going to become an internet application, but when. "When" could still be a very long time, however. The incumbent local phone companies -- Verizon, SBC, BellSouth and Qwest -- have various degrees of interest in VoIP, but are loathe to embrace it quickly or completely, because doing so means admitting to everyone -- shareholders, regulators, customers -- that both monopoly control and artificially high voice revenues are going away. (The fact that this is true does not much lessen the pain of saying so.) As a result, they will likely try to convince regulatory agencies, both the FCC and the states', to burden competitive VoIP firms like Vonage with additional costs and rules, while delaying their own offerings. Complicating this de facto Plan A, however, is the fact that VoIP isn't a service, it's just a set of protocols, meaning that competitors don't have to buy into Plan A to deploy it. If Plan A is "Replace the phone system slowly and from within," Plan B is far more radical: "Replace the phone system. Period." - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/voip_a_b.txt

A war without a plan 12/27/2004 07:17 PM
Critics of Donald Rumsfeld's Department of Defense have long alleged that military planners didn't prepare for the occupation of Iraq, and now a military planner himself is saying the same thing. In an unpublished report, covered by the Washington Post, Maj. Isasiah Wilson III, a military historian who helped devise the Pentagon's Iraq strategy, writes that the Defense Department never had a plan for "Phase IV" -- the period of occupation and reconstruction that would, in theory, have won the peace.
