Okay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us,
and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have
to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design -
the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have
a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release
a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?
Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post
in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which
you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed
it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

Wireles GPS Module LD-1W
09/23/2004 07:13 AM
And last but not least (if you're reading from the
bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new
peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset
with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that
also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not
actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly
recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery
and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing
charge to go along with it.
The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't
scheduled until Q1 2005.

Q&A on OpenMedia
Q&A on OpenMedia
08/11/2004 05:07 AMSo it begins.....
JD Lasica did a Q&A
with Sheila Lennon - here it is below along with my answers (in
italic):
• Can I put my home movies up there and send the link to my family?
Yep. But we're not yet sure if there will be private spaces or if
everything "up there" will be part of the public archive, accessible
to all.
The idea of this site is for public content. Everything up
there is for everyone. This site and project is NOT about private
content. They'll be plenty of places to put that stuff - but
not here.
HOWEVER if you want us all to see your child's ballet performance
or sports competition - we'd be delighted to give you some space. Or
maybe it's a little pony ride or a birthday party. We love kids,
families, vacations, art, grandparents, country scenes, water polo,
music and musical performances - everything - but we're about PUBLIC,
accessible, shared content. Not private content.
• I want to create an archive of every Bush/Kerry/Cheney/Edwards
campaign speech, enlisting volunteers who live along their routes. Can
you help me organize that?
You mean the text of the speeches instead of the video?
• No, I'd like to see vblogging by people who go to campaign
appearances, or by the campaigns themselves. Primary sources. Like
this little clip:
Yeah, this is the sort of thing that could be stored on the
open-media.org site we're building (what's nice for users is there's
no bandwidth costs). Then all you have to do is create a website with
whatever branding and text you'd like, and have a little screen for
video footage, point it to our servers to deliver the video stream or
download, and you're all set.
What a coincidence - in the case of poltiical candidates,
debates, news conferences, etc. there's an Internet Archievs project
that's doing that right now!@
So yes - we store all sorts of stuff like that and then YOU get to
buyild the site around it. We're just the hard drives. We give you
URLs of the storage location fo your open media.
• Do you own what I put there, as TextAmerica does?
No. Anyone who uploads anything will be required to fill out a form
stating which Creative Commons license she chooses, which typically
means the work may be freely shared and viewed by others but must be
attributed to the content creator. Or, full copyright can be
retained.
:-) Open Media for all - some rights reserved. Time to mash
it up now.
• Can I upload video from my phonecam?
Don't know. I'll ask around.
Ab-so-fucking-lutely! We don't care where the media comes
from. That's where the Open APIs come in. We'll have calls like:
upload, download, attach meta data, search for ______, etc.
• Is this like public-access cable, where I can do a "Wayne's
World" in my basement and upload it?
If you'd like! Hopefully people will create works with a bit more
meaning, but it will run the gamut from deeply felt digital stories to
satirical bits of entertainment.
Hey! What's wrong with Wayne's World? I'd rather watch them
than a 1,000 'meaningful student dramas'. Just cause they're
high-school grads with no college degree and with no high falooting
agenda - does not make them non-meaningful. I mean I pay homage to
'Stairway to Heaven' - too! :-)
• Am I gonna be able to search for other people's cat videos? By
breed?
Yes. We'll have keyword searches and a rich metadata library.
meow
• Can I put porn videos there?
No. We'll have terms of service and porn is one of the no-nos.
OK - well I'm some whacko Tribester Burner who's into foot
fetishes. Or tearing down pyramids - made of bras - with dancing
Druids circling chanting "Mashed Potatoes". Is that porno? Oh! did I
forget to say that the Druids are naked?
OpenMedia.org is heating up
OpenMedia.org is heating up
08/15/2004 05:24 PMLooks like we'll be able to "open up" the Openmedia.org Wiki real
soon now.
We've got enough content and momentum - that there's actually
something there for folks to grok now.
One thing JD and I have found - is the termendous support for this
concept and all the existing related efforts that TOTALLY tie into the
OpenMedia concept.
So now teh hard work commences. We need folks to actually DO
soemthing - instead oif just lurk. So we've set up specific
sub-groups, focused on particular issues:
- Web Site development
- Base Specs
- User Experience and User Interfaces
- Meta data
- Creator Authentication
- Roadmap
- Legal
We're hoping to make this dream come true.

In all the fuss over the new Nokia fashion phones
yesterday, I missed this Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset (the HS-13w);
fortunately, our pal Josh Rubin's keen eye scoped it out. The cool
thing about the HS-13w is that it's meant to be worn as a locket,
where you can use the built-in color display to look up and dial
contacts. That way you can keep Nokia's funky 7280 (or any other
Bluetooth-handset compatible Nokia) in your pocket. Pretty slick.

First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth
First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth
06/15/2004 11:54 AM
It's
only a proof of concept for now, but Symantec's Security Response site
is listing the first worm for Nokia Series 60 phones, called
EPOC.Cabir. The worm transmits itself over open Bluetooth connections
to other phones, copying itself over where it continues to search for
other Bluetooth-enabled devices -- after copying itself to another,
hidden directory from where it executes, meaning even deleting the
trojan .SIS file and rebooting won't stop the worm from
replicating.
Since EPOC.Cabir is proof of concept alone for now, there is no
payload (like deleting all your contacts or something), besides the
diminished battery life of a phone always actively searching and
copying over Bluetooth. Don't get too worried, for now, but make sure
you have disabled Bluetooth when not in use and never accept Bluetooth
connections from unknown sources or open/execute files from unknown
sources -- you know, all the basic network safety tips you should know
from when we all collectively saved the internet from Outlook
viruses.
