Thank god there is a guy by that very name at MobileMag, and thank even a better god that he reviewed the Japanese watch full of a ridiculous number of LEDs. The weird thing is, every pimp I ever knew had a calculator watch.

ESPN website free to call Evel Knievel
"a pimp," court says
01/04/2005 08:56 PM
Xeni Jardin: A US appeals court ruled today that motorcycle stunt deity Evel Knievel cannot sue ESPN for publishing his photo online with two women above the caption "You're never too old to be a pimp."
The term "pimp" was probably intended as a compliment, the court said. But Knievel said, "What good is law in the United States of America if five or six goddamn bimbos are going to rule against it?"

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;
Knievel Rules Judges Are Bimbos
01/04/2005 08:20 PM
Really not quite sure what to make of this one, but it's too amusing to pass up. Apparently, a few years ago, ESPN posted a picture of famed daredevil Evel Knievel with his arms around two women (one of whom was his wife) with the caption: "You're never too old to be a pimp." Knievel, not realizing this was a (weak) attempt at complimenting him, sued ESPN for defamation. A lower court tossed out the ruling, and he appealed. Now the Appeals Court has ruled against him as well, noting that, based on the context no one is actually going to think Knievel is a "pimp," and, in fact that the statement was supposed to be a positive one, as the slang of the day suggests. Knievel, apparently lacking a sense of irony over this particular case, has responded by calling the judges "bimbos." The full quote is: "They ruled against the law. What good is law in the United States of America if five or six goddamn bimbos are going to rule against it?" You think he intended that as a compliment? Anyway, in the meantime, feel free to go on captioning photos on the web while calling people pimps.

Buying prostitutes. Nicholas Kristof (of the NY Times; reg. req.) bought the freedom of two young Cambodian prostitutes in order to return them to their villages... but it wasn't as simple as you might think. It's easy to be cynical (yes, he's using it as grist for columns; yes, it's a drop in the bucket), but isn't it better than doing nothing? Anyway, it's a fascinatingly messy story. The SH066P Personal Cell Phone Jammer is disguised as a phone, has an effective radius of 10-15 yards, and comes in US and worldwide frequency-flavors. They're illegal to use in most places, but not illegal to possess, build or sell. I'm as bugged by mobile abuse as the next person, but using one of these strikes me as a mcuh greater breach of the social contract than talking too loud or subjecting your coachmates to the default Nokia ring. Though cashless "Cmode" vending machines have been in various places throughout Japan since April of 2002, these are the first vending machines to support contactless IC as a method of transfer.

With drink names like "Qoo," "SCORPION," and "Lovebody," who could resist?

Cellphone tips

Cellphone tips 12/08/2003 11:39 AM

I have a cellphone with Cingular, and opted to get the extra line for 9.99 a month (a good deal). What I learned is this (also true with Verizon): if you get a phone or an extra line, the first year, you cannot cancel the contract. Well, you can, but it costs more to cancel than to keep it open. In this case, they charge 200$ to cancel the contract, versus $80 to keep it open 8 more months, after which cancelling is free.

By the way, if you're still with Verizon, consider Cingular. They seem distinctly less evil, for now.

Sony Considering PSP, Cellphone Hybrid

Sony Considering PSP, Cellphone Hybrid 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

sony_psp_keyboard2.jpg imageSpeaking of the N-Gage, Sony is now making stink about various versions of the PSP being released in the future that may be hybrid integrations of the PSP and cellphones, PDAs, etc. They let on about this a little at E3. Remember those clear, plastic overlays they had over the top of all the demo models? At least one of those had the look of a cellphone keypad. Portagame has a partially-translated interview with SCEI CTO Masa Chatani, where he also mentions that Sony still hasn't finalized exactly which screens the PSP will be using. I wonder if that worldwide LCD shortage is freaking them out yet.

One Out of Ten Cellphone Users Want
Music

One Out of Ten Cellphone Users Want
Music
07/30/2004 07:07 AM

I can't decide how to interpret these numbers: 11.4% of cellphone users surveyed are interested in buying music and other audio services (endlessly looping, ear-tearing sine waves, strangely enough) for use on their mobile handset. The question is, did the other 89% of people not really think it was practical yet, but will come around, or were they vehemently opposed to trying to converge yet another function into already-expensive handsets. Sure, you and I don't mind listening to music on our phones, because we're big nerds. And in the future, I don't expect the resistance to convergence will do anything but decrease (people are just going to accept that phones are turning into computers, minus the occasional Luddite anachronisms).

But whatever, I guess it's a good sign, in general. I'm sure if you polled another thousand cellphone users right now far less than half of them would say they are interested in PDA-like functions on their phone, despite the fact that that's clearly where the market is trying to go.

Used cellphone market taking off

Used cellphone market taking off 04/23/2004 01:34 AM
The NYT reports on the growing US market for refurbished, used cellphones.
Many customers for these retreads are more interested in price tags than multimedia messaging or games of Snake II. "They say, 'I just want to make a phone call,' " said Jay Ellison, executive vice president of U.S. Cellular (www.uscc.com), a wireless carrier based in Chicago, which operates in 26 states and maintains a small inventory of refurbished handsets in its stores.

But there is also the cellphone equivalent of the preowned BMW. ReCellular, a company based in Dexter, Mich., resells about four million handsets in bulk worldwide each year. Of the 1.5 million it resells domestically, mostly for use in prepaid wireless plans, "plenty are higher-end with cameras and bells and whistles," said Eric Forster, an executive for the company, which finds buyers for phones collected by charities, as well as retailers' overstocks and trade-ins.
