Tiny tiny 4GB hard drive 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
So you thought the 4GB IBM/Hitachi micro drives as used in the iPod mini are small? Toshiba is making a 4GB drive that is only 2.1cm (0.85 inch) in diameter. (via Macminute) Less than 10 years ago when I had my BBS and FidoNet hub "the Source!" (spelled that way) I had a much bigger disk with much less capacity that imploded. Henrik Jřrgensen came to the rescue, lending me a 4GB scsi disk and a scsi controller so I...

Toshiba's new hard drives are the size of a nickel and can store over a gigabyte of data.
The 0.85 inch diameter disk is believed to be the world's smallest hard disk drive that can store about 2 or 3 gigabytes worth of information, company spokeswoman Midori Suzuki said Monday.

toshibahdd01.jpg imageAccording to The Inquirer, Japanese companies are rapidly increasing production of their small hard drives as, unsurprisingly, the demand for tiny storage that will fit in portable electronics increases rapidly. Toshiba is planning on ramping up production of its tiny 0.85-inch hard drives to a rate of almost 200,000 a month, while Hitachi will increase its 1-inch drive production to two million units per quarter. Global hard drive markers shipped 260 million units in fiscal 2003, 80 percent of which went into servers and PCs. The remaining percentage, which goes into home electronics, are expected to grow by 50% each year -- I'm betting it will be even greater than that once the manufacturers can get enough tiny units into the channels. Two years from now there won't be a single smartphone announced without a hard drive.

High Growth Expected for Safety PLCs &
Safety Bus/Networks
04/14/2005 04:00 AM
There are concerns about the reliability and safety in the use of safety buses/networks for machine automatic safeguarding, particularly when safety and non-safety data is handled by the same bus/network. Nevertheless usage is expected to grow significantly over the forecast period, as the use of safety PLCs grows and reliability of operations with safety buses/networks becomes proven. Usage is particularly attractive when machines and controls become more complex (i.e., for example, requiring many emergency stops and/or safety gate switches with multiple actuators). 09/14/2004 11:18 AM

jvc_hdd_cams.jpg imageOops, I almost forgot about these new cameras announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500, though).

Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

Tiny Orwell is a simple TypeKey-like authentication system written in the spirit of the Trackback reference implementation and blosxom. This script provides an alternate to TypeKey for small groups using MT 3.0D or any other tool that supports the TypeKey API with a minimal amount of fuss.

You gotta love the name of this plugin, don't you? Kalsey already did something like this, but using PHP.

In other news, I noticed that the MT Plugin Directory has been redesigned to fit into the main Movable Type site design.

The Movable Type Plugins Directory has relaunched as an official Six Apart website, featuring a whole new look, simpler organization, and a list of plugins which have been tested with Movable Type 3.

Nice that it's finally official. I think the girls were running it up until this point. I'd like to see the Movable Type Wiki become official someday. I contributed a fair amount to this resource just before it went public.

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM

So why would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for only the price of additional hard drives.

An Ode To The Hard Drive

An Ode To The Hard Drive 05/27/2004 09:35 AM
You know it's likely to be a slow news day when the first thing you turn up is, basically, an ode to the unsung hard drive. Hard drives are, admittedly, a fairly unsexy business. Then again, you might think the same thing about semiconductors - and they seem to get plenty of attention. Either way, storage is very important to consumers - as the article notes in looking at how quickly people focus on the size of their iPod hard drives or just how much space their Gmail account really has. Even the leading people in the storage business are quite colorful and certainly unique, which should get them much more attention. However, when it's all said and done, no matter how important your hard drive is (just think how people react when their hard drives die), and no matter how quickly they improve in just how much data they can hold, not too many people find themselves particularly interested in the "boring" hard drive business.

It also has a built-in card reader, USB host (duh), and a rechargeable battery. USB OTG is pretty simple, and pretty great. By adding a USB host to storage, you can hook your digital camera or anything else that supports the standard up to it and transfer data without needing to hook up to a PC. That is a positive thing.

That being said, I have a hard time believing this is the first USB OTG hard drive to see the light of day.

The FireWire/USB Hard Drive With USB,
UDH-UEH400
03/23/2005 04:53 AM

iodata_hdd.jpg imageIO Data Device has come up with another hum-dinger. If you were to put an enormous hard drive inside a USB 2.0/FireWire casing, give it some blue LEDs, and add a USB port, you'd end up with the 400GB "UDH-UEH400." Not only does it connect by USB (or FireWire), but it has a USB port. If you're like me and have a single USB port on your computer, you certainly wouldn't want it being taken up by just a hard drive. Yeah, I know daisy chaining has been around for years and years with SCSI (and thus FireWire, its distant cousin), but I think this is one of the first applications of it I've seen in USB form. Somehow, it can even recognize USB devices if you connect the drive by FireWire. Don't ask me how that works; I didn't realize something like that was even possible.

New Virus Erases Hard Drive

New Virus Erases Hard Drive 06/08/2004 03:15 PM

From the 'It Was Bound To Happen' department: Symantec
reports that a new virus is making the rounds that deletes all files on the infected PC:

The malware targets Windows computers, and arrives in an email bearing the subject "Re" and an attachment that will have an .asp, .hta, .htm, .htt, .html, .vbe or .vbs extension. Upon infection, the virus uses Microsoft Outlook to send itself to everyone in the Microsoft Outlook Address Book. "If the day is the 6th, 13th, 21st, or 28th, the worm will delete all the files from the computer," Symantec reports. Despite its nasty payload, SANS notes that VBS.Pub "doesn't possess any earth-shattering characteristics to make it a significant propagation threat."

If this one did propogate widely, it would be regrettable, but it would at least help solve the problem of old, unpatched, unprotected Windows boxes that act as virus sponges.

Now let's wait for the first "doesn't happen on a Mac" comment. ;-)
