Blogs Help You Cope With Data Overload -- If You Manage Them

"To help juggle all those blogs, I've started playing around with a relatively new phenomenon called a newsreader. Rather than forcing you to jump from one blog to another to keep up with new entries, newsreaders bring together the latest postings from your favorite blogs in a single place." [Wall Street Journal (free article)]

A throwaway article about RSS and aggregators that focuses entirely on blogs and doesn't once mention the fact that there are some big time news sites that offer feeds. Hmmm... I wonder why they would ignore such an important fact? Could it be because the WSJ has yet to embrace RSS and offer feeds of its own?....

Newsreaders Cut to the Chase

Newsreaders Cut to the Chase 04/05/2005 06:15 AM
News junkies can find plenty of sources on the web for the latest news. That's great, and it's a problem. John Gartner takes a look at how newsreaders can help cut the clutter.

Web services for newsreaders?

Web services for newsreaders? 01/07/2004 03:07 PM
If you haven’t seen feeds.scripting.com yet, it’s a place you can share your OPML subscriptions files. It has a rankings page so you can see what’s popular, you can see who subscribes to a given feed, and if you’re a member of the site there are a few other cool features.

Other web sites have some similar features, of course. (Technorati is one of my favorites.) I bring up feeds.scripting.com because it’s new and so it’s a good time to ask what you think about web services for newsreaders.

We at Ranchero don’t plan to create any web services. But we do plan to make NetNewsWire work with various newsreader-oriented web services—so here are a couple questions:

1. What existing web services interest you?

Examples: you might wish NetNewsWire uploaded OPML files automatically to feeds.scripting.com or somewhere. Or you might wish NetNewsWire made it easy to create Feedster search feeds. And so on.

And here’s the bigger question...

2. What new web services would you like to see?

I have to admit, I don’t spend much time thinking about web services, so no really good examples come to mind. And there are actually a number of good services out there already, some of them under-publicized, so it may be that a bunch of good ideas have already been done.

But I bet you can come up with some new ones.

Auren Hoffman just spent nine months analyzing the acuuracy and results of all the major search engines.

He notices lots of descrepancies and inaccuracies.

Me too.

I'm currently at 46,900. There's one other Marc Canter out there running around. He's the manager/owener at Canter's Deli on Fairfax in West Hollywood.

:-)

Anyway Auren's report is interesting.

SoundBlox mentions 01/22/2004 02:32 AM

More and more folks are starting to notice the coolio MP3 player that laszlo is offering - called the SoundBlox.  All you have to do is:

- store some MP3s on a server somewhere and get their URLs

- add those uRLs to an XML file and store that on your server - too.

- go to Lyndon Wong's SoundBlox page - and get you some Javascript!

- put that Javascript in your gutter - pointing at your XML file

- kabing, kaboom - you're rocking!

First PassThinking (RichKarpinski.blogs.com)

Laszlo BlogBox

I was one of the first reporters to write about Laszlo; I was quite impressed by the company and their top execs.

Now, Laszlo is apparently delivering some free Flash/XML widgets to add sidebar functionality to blogs. Check out Blogbox and Soundblox.

Found c/o Marc Canter's weblog, where he is running both widgets. [First Pass thinking]

XML and software (Ken Novak's blog)

Soundblox: "can be embedded into a personal blog template or Web page, and displayed in any modern Web browser (via Flash Player 5 or above). .. : SoundBlox is part of a series of BlogBoxes that provide rich Internet functionality for bloggers while showcasing the merits of Laszlo's declarative XML development approach. Application code in this series is available under an Apache-style open source license."  This example played me the Grateful Dead.[ Ken Novak's blog]

So come on all your bloggers, better get ready for some musical tunes. Playing their hearts out, right there in your saloon.  A dirty old place, it's your virtual gutter.  And now, heaven forbid you can hear it utter.

Time Mentions RSS without Mentioning RSS 06/13/2004 09:42 PM

Meet Joe Blog

"Not that long ago, blogs were one of those annoying buzz words that you could safely get away with ignoring. The word blog — it works as both noun and verb — is short for Web log. It was coined in 1997 to describe a website where you could post daily scribblings, journal-style, about whatever you like — mostly critiquing and linking to other articles online that may have sparked your thinking. Unlike a big media outlet, bloggers focus their efforts on narrow topics, often rising to become de facto watchdogs and self-proclaimed experts. Blogs can be about anything: politics, sex, baseball, haiku, car repair. There are blogs about blogs." [Time]

Nothing new in this article, and actually it's suprisingly late, but what did strike me is the way it ends, with "five sites that make it easy to find, organize and keep tabs on your favorite bloggers." Kinja, Technorati, and Blogdex are all no-brainer inclusions, but the list is rounded out with Bloglines and Feedster without ever once mentioning the words RSS, syndication, or aggregator.

This is how RSS goes mainstream. The next article will just have to figure out how to explain that both sites offer more than just blogs.
