Although I hadn't watched Jeopardy in maybe 20 years, a couple of weeks ago I watched a few featuring Ken Jennings, the million-dollar smart guy. Very impressive. And it struck me how they're cheating... Watch some reruns before Jennings was on. The questions were much easier. Having dumber questions favors any contestant who is outlandishly smarter than the others. So, while it's not quite cheating, it does tilt the board toward Jennings and lets him run up $50,000 daily totals leaving the other contestants with nothing but a snapshot of Alex Trebeck and a tune they can't get out of...

Anyway, I wanted to reassure everyone, from our top Gecko hackers to interested web developers to enthusiastic surfers, that Firefox is not about to implode into a bare-bones, ultra-minimalist browser that those important hackers, et al., can't use. Firefox cannot be "all things to all people" without at least some people having to configure an extension or two, but the default features should support the crucial user bases.

While the US has been notoriously tough on the idea of any online gambling in the US, there are a number of companies doing quite well in the somewhat "gray" area of online games of skill for money. These aren't games of chance, but still require players to put up money, and the winners go home with more than they put in. The difference, of course, is that the win is based (at least somewhat) on the skills of the players. However, this can be a very fine line. Most games involve a mix of skill and luck, and you can make the claim that classic gambling games like poker and blackjack require some amount of skill as well. Still, the online "games of skill" providers claim they're just like a typical sports association, like the US Tennis Association, that sets up tournaments and awards prizes to the winners - minus their own cut. Of course, they conveniently skip over the part about where the money comes from. With these online games, it is still a "pay to enter" sort of contest. Either way, it's not entirely clear how the legal issues will play out. Some states already bar such online games of skill, but many don't. Federal laws are still unclear, and the companies involved in this space are lobbying heavily to try to make the point that they should be allowed to continue where online gambling sites are forbidden.

Although Ion Storm has closed shop and the Thief franchise is more than likely headed the way of the Bismarck, an editor for Thief: Deadly Shadows has been released. It's always a shame when a good franchise dies, but at least fans of Thief will be able to enjoy some new maps with the last title in the series.

I'm thinking about switching to an LCD since I've been having problems with my 22" Viewsonic CRT. Just about any LCD will be good enough for text work, I figure, but I'd also like it to work acceptably for fast-paced (= shoot everything) games. Any thoughts? And, care to tell me if the following assumption is true? Since 19" and 17" LCDs run at the same resolution, there's not much point in paying the extra couple of hundred bucks for the larger one: It's just making the pixels bigger. And the truth is that I'm thinking about getting two LCDs...
