07/18/2004 08:19 PMBackground I was a reasonably happy Sprint PCS customer for the last
2.5 years or so. But ever since I moved into my new place, I've become
more of a disgruntled customer. The wireless signal in my house sucks.
I get one "bar" of signal strength and calls typically drop, if they
work at all. And the coverage at work seems to have gone downhill too.
Even on the 4th floor where my current office is, I get lots of...

Tech As A Platform
09/23/2004 11:18 AMWhile it may seem a bit strange to some to find out that
Nokia is launching a
security camera product, it does signal the realization that the
technology used on cellular networks isn't just about mobile phones --
but can be seen as a platform for other devices and applications.
While we have no idea if the cellular camera idea makes sense or will
be even remotely successful for Nokia (seems unlikely), it's basically
using the same technology found in many camera phones. It has a
camera, a GSM radio and MMS capabilities. It detects motion and sends
an MMS video to either a mobile phone or email. This is just finding
a new, non-phone application for technologies that already exist.
It's about viewing the technologies as a platform, and then looking
for applications to build on top of it.

www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99995012"If
you recall this sentence a few seconds from now, you can thank a
simple network of neurons for the experience. That is the conclusions
of researchers who have built a computer model that can reproduce an
important aspect of short-term memory. The key, they say, is that the
neurons form a 'small world' network. Small-world networks are
surprisingly common. Human social networks, for example, famously
connect any two people on Earth - or any actor to Kevin Bacon - in six
steps or less. ... 'The philosophical conclusion is that connectivity
matters,' says [Northwestern University] team member Sara Solla. 'Our
model uses only a simple caricature of neurons, yet this network shows
this working memory-like behaviour.' ... They found that when 10 to 20
per cent of the neurons participated in short cuts, the network formed
self-sustaining loops of activity."

Namespaces and Social Networks in a
Tagged World
Namespaces and Social Networks in a
Tagged World
02/05/2005 09:12 PM
David Weinberger has
a brilliant
quick statement about how BOTH namespaces and social networks will
be used to disambiguate tags'.
I sure as hell hope so. I'd hate it if there was nothing to
disambiguate tags.
Namespaces and Social Networks in a Tagged World
As the interest in tagging and folksonomies grows, we are going to be
faced with a choice: Namespaces or social networks.
The problem is that tags are too simple and ambiguous. (That's also
their strength, but we'll let that go for the moment.) As tens of
millions of people start tagging Web resources, many tags will include
too many disparate items: When you're searching for pages about
London, do you really want to get pages about Jack London? And, no one
really wants information about London; we always want information
about some aspect of a topic. So, the "London"-tagged pages about
London's club scene are noise to someone looking for information about
London's form of government.
Namespaces, or domains of discourse if you prefer, are one way
around this. For example, the Global Voices group that encourages
inter-national blogging, suggests tagging relevant pages with the
prefix "gv" as in "gv:ghana" or "gv:thailand." We will undoubtedly see
a proliferation of such prefixes, and if tagging really takes off, we
may end up with an unregulated version of the domain system in which
multiple organizations squabble over who gets to use a particular
prefix.
Social networks provide an alternative. If I knew who the people
associated with Global Voices were, and if I knew who was the author
of particular tags, I could search for the "ghana" tag and find only
the ones created by GV members. That wouldn't be perfect because it
would get pages tagged by GV members for personal use, but it might be
good enough, especially with further refinement.
This is not an either/or. I'm confident we're going to see both
namespaces and social networks used to disambiguate tags. And there
are undoubtedly brilliant ideas waiting to be had. But it seems highly
likely to me that social networks are going to become more important
than ever in a world gone made with tagging.
[Operating
Manual for Social Tools]
I love this piece.
It's especially heartening for me to listen to David talk about
social networks - as I know he's against the 'Friendster/Tribe' school
of thought - but seems to have accepted a more generalized notion of
what social networks are - and will be.
Anyway - I never said I liked those explicit social networks - it's
just that it was so much dam fun gaming them (apparently Joi had fun
-too!) But it's up to folks like David - who keep us honest -
especially when it comes to the difference between something explcit
liek calling someone "your friend" - versus truth and honesty.

Two new Pocket PCs from
Fujitsu-Siemens, the Pocket LOOX 410 and 420. Both have 240 x 320
pixel 65k transflective screens, Bluetooth and infrared, and SDIO,
while the 420 alone has integrated WiFi. The 410 gets a 300MHz Intel
XScale PXA255, while the 420 putts along with a 400Mhz version, both
driven by Windows Mobile 2003. All in all, very nice looking,
physically, but a little behind the cutting edge of internals (where's
the hot VGA screens or the Bulverde processors?) One nice touch,
though, is the battery buffer that gives users up to 30 minutes to
swap in a new battery after the standard 1100 mAh/10 hour one runs
down.

Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo A1630 Review
06/25/2004 08:53 AM
Two firsts for
Fujitsu-Siemens; their new Amilo A1630 has both a widescreen 1,280 x
800 display and is powered by their first Athlon 64 processor. It's a
healthy young scamp, as reviewed, at least, with 512MB of RAM, a 128MB
Radeon 9700 Mobility, DVD writer, 802.11g, and 5.1-channel sound (yes,
this is a notebook). It's got some quirks, like a Fn key where the
Ctrl should be, and a processor that seems to be throttling itself too
often due to heat issues, but for the price -- around $2,000, give or
take -- it's a lot of machine. If these desktop replacements keep
dropping in price -- and continue to keep pace with the desktop 3D
graphics -- I might finally be dropping my handbuilt gaming rigs for
good.
