Tunisian bl0gger finally released from
prison after hunger strikes, alleged
torture
11/18/2003 03:14 PM
35-year-old Tunisian blogger Zouhair Yahyaoui, imprisoned since June 2002 for criticizing the Tunisian government on his weblog, was released on parole this morning. An overjoyed Sophie Elwarda -- his fiance, who campaigned tirelessly for his release -- tells BoingBoing:
"Zouhair returned to his family's home shortly after his release. This morning even, he was still unaware of this decision and thus has just stopped the hunger strike he started on November 2nd. He is very weak and suffers from his dental abscess due to poor medical care in prison, but seemed to be in a good mental state when he talked to us on the phone and thanks all those who have been supporting his case during all these months.

He does not forget the people he left behin him and said to one of his friends: "Two years are nothing compared to the long sentence of some of my fellow prisoners ". I can only express a very great happiness to know he is free, at his place finally, after this year and half of battle.

I thus dedicate my joy to all those who, by their thought, their messages of support (to which I sometimes forgot to answer), their presence, their combativity, their perseverance, allowed this day to come and that I write, finally, the press release I've always dreamed of ! I also dedicate it to all NGOs which supported Zouhair (by regard for those that I might forget, I do not make the list), to all the journalists who have been the echo of our voice, to his courageous family and to all those forming what Zouhair calls "his XXL family". And if I had only one hope to express, it would be this one: May this press release be REALLY the last !"

Background on Zouhair's case here; Reporters Without Borders press release here.

Spammer, Anti-Spammer Involved In

Spammer, Anti-Spammer Involved In
Lawsuit Will Hold Public Debate
05/20/2004 11:41 PM
Julian Haight, the founder of anti-spam service SpamCop, and Scott Richter, the founder of spamming service OptInRealBig, are currently in the middle of a fairly nasty legal battle over whether or not SpamCop can block OptIn's spam. Still, the two have agreed to appear together in public and debate the topic. Both of their lawyers say that the debate will avoid the issue of the lawsuit, but as the article points out, that seems unlikely. The thing is, in listening to what both sides have said over the years, you already know what they're going to say in this debate - and they're talking at cross purposes. The spammers focus on their right to make money, while everyone else talks about their right to be left alone. The problem with the spammers' position is that they don't have the right to make money. They have the right to try to make money, but if it involves pissing everyone off, and everyone decides to create and use filters to make email bearable again - then that's their right too.

The Phillies Spammer

The Phillies Spammer 01/04/2005 08:49 AM

Trial begins for Phillies fan accused of e-mail hacking: Being a crazy sports fan is one thing. Spoofing the email address of area sportwriters and spamming everyone, apparently, is not.

But yesterday, Carlson sat alone in a federal courtroom in Philadelphia, the accused boo-bird who hijacked the e-mail addresses of area sportswriters and sent out tens of thousands of anti-Phillies cyber-rants in their names.

"Like a lot of people, he was not happy about the fact that the Phillies were not winning," Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. Levy said in his opening statement to the jury. "But Mr. Carlson... decided to do something more. He launched an electronic attack against the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Newspapers Inc."

They're charging him with identify theft under federal law. He sent 100,000 emails, one of which resulted in 60,000 bounces to a local sports columnist.

Spammers strike back? Well then call this return of the Webmaster Jedi. As a blogger and domain owner, I am sick of waking up to fifty new comments, all of which are spam for something of dubious legality. The fine folks at Kalsey are angry too. And they declared war. Lots of people stood up and took notice. What can you do to help stop this infestation? Blacklists and Bayesian filtering come to mind... (Via Smart Mobs)

Why you might be an unwitting spammer

Why you might be an unwitting spammer 05/27/2004 03:22 PM
Continuing in my quest for a spam-free mailbox, I have become more and more interested in the way(s) spammers collect their victim's addresses. In fact, I routinely receive junk mail in various languages I don't even understand (Chinese, German, Korean, Brazilian, and God knows what else), let alone having any relationship whatsoever with those countries. So I started thinking how the heck some email addresses of mine ended up in those spamming lists.

Spammer discussion

Spammer discussion 01/12/2004 01:53 AM

Blog and guestbook spammers are discussing spam techniques in this Usenet thread found by Andy Baio.

It’s an interesting read. One of the main characters is a moron who shows his ignorance at every turn. There are many claims that what they are doing is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). There are legitimate SEO companies, and there are guys like these. If you are hiring a SEO company, make sure you know what techniques they are using or you might end up with a site marketed in the same manner as the porn and prescription drug schemes they are discussing.

They also linked to my AP News article on spam. So they know we’re watching.

In a mix of true detective work and a little high tech knowhow, a Wi-Fi spammer is caught while sending out pornographic spam over an open wireless access point. A spammer in California has been accused of driving around looking for un-secured hotspots and sending spam from the open connections: The original story here is one of those infuriating reads that doesn't mention how the guy got caught. It seems that historically people who have gotten caught for improperly using hotspots have done so by being stupid or unlucky. It's otherwise difficult to track someone down especially if they move around a lot looking for insecure hotspots....
