Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

for president to ever defeat a sitting president are "outsiders"
(e.g., like Dean) or plausible outsiders (e.g., like Edwards). Never
since Lincoln has a Washington insider defeated a sitting president.

11/10/2003 10:49 PM Dean
can't carry the south. The New Republic's Jonathan Chait writes in
response to Dean's flag gaffe: "What's alarming here is not that
Dean wants to win votes from guys with Confederate flags on their
pickup trucks. It's that he thinks he actually can... His aggressive
secularism, association with civil unions, and antiwar stance all make
him culturally anathema in the South. This is one of the many, many
reasons Dean would be squashed like a bug in the general election if
nominated: Bush could take the South for granted, and concentrate all
his resources on battleground states like Pennsylvania. "

much simpler. It won't work."

Taiwanese CARRY Computer has
a updated to their combination DVD+R player/CD-RW/flash card reader
called the 'FotoBar' that is designed primarily to burn data from
memory cards onto CDs or DVDs. You can also hook the FotoBar up to
your PC via USB 2.0 to act as a regular card reader or burner. In
addition, you can even throw MPEG and DivX files onto the FotoBar and
play them through its S-Video or Composite outs. An LCD screen would
be nice, of course, but as a hybrid device it's pretty intriguing. The
FotoBar will support SD/MMC/Memory Stick (and Pro)/Smart Media/CF/and

Across the great divide
Across the great divide
09/04/2004 09:18 PM

I first pointed to this stunning
Valdis Krebs infographic
back in March
2004, when the New York Times published it. Krebs has long been
fascinated with the clusters that emerge from an analysis of Amazon's
related-purchase data. I was reminded of his chart the other day when
I heard
this
exchange (Real, 1 min, 40 sec) between Terri Gross and Norman
Podhoretz, which includes this quote:
I have almost no friends any longer who are liberal, and I suspect
this is true of most people on both sides of the divide. Since the
sixties, the polarization has become more intense, and there are fewer
and fewer friendships that can be sustained across the divide in this
country.
What religious differences used to be, and aren't any more (in our
world, not the Muslim world), political differences have become.
They've acquired a kind of religious intensity, and are tinged with a
kind of intolerance that used to characterize religious differences.
[Norman
Podhoretz, inteviewed by Terri Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, Real, 20
min.)
Having lived on both sides of the chasm -- he was a radical liberal
before he became a founder of neoconservativism -- Podhoretz seems to
have a rare appreciation of the great divide. I suspect the majority
of us, not having lived on both sides, lack that same gut-level
appreciation.

« A shrine to candle wax in the restaurant Kynsilaukka, the Finnish
equivalent to the Stinking Rose. »
I've begun to notice that restaurants and just about any place that
offers food and tables almost always have newspapers and magazines for
their patrons. These are, I presume, for those who are alone and want
something to read while eating instead of staring at the walls. Given
that a large percentage of the population in Finland lives alone, it
makes a certain amount of sense, but I still find it odd to gaze upon
a sea of tables occupied by people trying to read and stuff their
mouth at the same time, something I find quite difficult to do. I
don't remember too many places in the US, other than diners or
breakfast houses, that would offer newspapers for the patrons.
I always used to get take-away whenever I had no companion to dine
with as I viewed restaurants as a place to be social and would feel
very awkward were I alone. Sometimes I would take a book with me to a
local pub where I would sit at the bar, order a beer and a burger, and
read a little bit until someone would ask about the book or about work
or whatever just to start a conversation. I suppose I admire the
wherewithal it takes to take yourself out to eat, but there's
something incredibly lonely about it, too. Finns likely don't even
notice the silent ones in the corner munching away over the paper and
even if they did they'd likely think they want to be left alone. I
suppose they have to believe that.
