Xeni Jardin:

During the
"iPod
Beemer" episode I did last week on the NPR show "Day to Day," I
played a couple examples of the kinds of tunes you could rock out to
in your iPodified BMW convertible -- one of them was "Early in the
Morning," by legendary '80s R+B icons
The Gap Band. During that episode,
host
Noah
Adams inadvertently dissed the Gap Band. When he heard that
segment air, my D2D colleague
Brian Unger vowed to settle the score of funk: he challenged Mr.
Adams to a duel, and here is the result. Listen to Brian's segment
"Don't Diss The Gap Band" --

Update: BoingBoing reader Mike Ransom of Tulsa Oklahoma
says, "The GAP Band was named after three streets here in Tulsa:
Greenwood, Archer and Pine. That's the same Greenwood and Archer
mentioned in the archetypical Bob Wills Western Swing tune, "Take Me
Back To Tulsa". Here's a further bit of trivia about one of those
streets -- Link. The
story above is done in the style of Paul Harvey, a Tulsa native. Here
is a morph I did of Paul Harvey from his high school yearbook picture
-- Link."

David Pescovitz:
First used centuries ago to treat battlefield wounds, maggots are
proving to be a useful treatment to prevent post-operative infections.
Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) calls for maggot dressing to be
applied to wounds twice a week for up to 72 hours each time. From the
press release about a recent study on MDT in the journal
Clinical Infectious Diseases:
"Debridement, or the removal of contaminated tissue to
expose healthy tissue, can be done surgically. However, maggots that
have been disinfected during the egg stage so that they don’t
carry bacteria into the wound have their advantages. The larvae
preferentially consume dead tissue (steering clear of live), they
excrete an antibacterial agent, and they stimulate wound healing--all
factors that could be linked to the lower occurrence of infection in
maggot-treated wounds."

FireWheel Rubber Band Gun
FireWheel Rubber Band Gun
12/19/2004 03:01 PM
It's a shame I hadn't seen this Firewheel rubber
band gun before now—entirely my fault, too, since apparently DansData reviewed it
almost a week ago, yet I totally missed it. It's simple, cheap, and
awesome, which is right up my alley. It's just a click-wheel rubber
band gun, but the nautilus shell design allows you to pop off one of
the ten loaded rubber bands at a time, hold it down for a full-auto
burst, or just rock semi somewhere in between. It's an Australian
design, but they've got an outlet here in the US, so there might just
be a chance I can make some mothers unhappy with a few arms shipments
to young boys. (Thanks, Matt!)

FCC Restructures Crucial Band
FCC Restructures Crucial Band
06/10/2004 05:50 PMSteve Stroh says today's FCC reworking of the MMDS/ITFS band makes
sense, but will be for naught: Read Daily Wireless's explanation of
the move for details, but broadly, almost 200 MHz of sweet-spot
spectrum in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz range that's been carved up and
relicensed in unpleasantly small and low-utility ways will be
restructured for more utility and continuity. Stroh notes, however,
that the FCC has opted out of the process by which the transition of
existing users will take place. This means that the owners and users
of the band have to figure it out. Stroh feels that currently
deploying fixed broadband wireless companies have a huge advantage
over those that were expecting to carve out new space in this band.
Stroh also expects this entire band to go license-exempt within 10
years. Daily Wireless remarks that the 6 MHz sub-bands in the revision
fits cellular 3G's needs. In the CDMA world, 1x = 1.25 MHz, as in
1xRTT and 1xEv-DO; 3x = 5 MHz. The service currently hosts a very
small number of actually instructional television broadcasters, and
they'll have new contiguous channels to use....

05/13/2004 03:41 PMThe FCC today
proposed
to allow unlicensed wireless devices to operate in the broadcast TV
bands. This is a big step forward, and one that was fiercely
contested by incumbent broadcasters. The FCC's proposal could
open up significant new wireless capacity for broadband data services
throughout the US.
The next step will be to file comments with the FCC in support of
unlicensed operation in the bands. The comment deadlines haven't
yet been released, but are usually two to three months from when the
proposal is issued.

The Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ) refused to
allow business to compete for spots in the Instructional
Television Fixed Service ( ITFS ), a
part of the electromagnetic spectrum reserved for educational use since
1962. Such a move had been sought based
on the underutilization of that part of the spectrum, but
opposed by education groups .
The FCC's decision came during an
allocation of spectrum for more wireless usage.

Iraqi heavy metal band
08/18/2004 12:23 PMLooks like they've found those weapons of mass destruction. WSJ
article about Iraqi heavy metal outfit Acrassicauda, and what life is
like trying to obliterate audiences with satanic soundwaves after the
fall of Saddam.
The members of Acrassicauda honed their English by singing along to
black-market Megadeth and Metallica CDs. They developed their stage
moves by copying what they saw on pirated videotapes of American rock
concerts. Now they're learning a different lesson: the difficulties of
reviving culture and entertainment in a society ripped apart by war.
The four members of Acrassicauda, which means Black Scorpion in Latin,
hope they can prove just as resilient. The young men -- Mr. Talal,
bassist Faris al-Lateef, drummer Marwan Mohammad Riyak and guitarist
Tony Aziz -- met as high-school students and formed the band, along
with another member, in 2000. Scions of prominent families, they were
drawn together by their love of Western heavy-metal bands like Slayer
and Judas Priest, which appealed to their feelings of isolation and
disillusionment.
"It's about feeling powerless and lonely and wanting to scream out
because no one else is paying attention to what you're feeling," says
Mr. Lateef, 23, who has spiky hair, a goatee and tinted sunglasses
that he wears indoors. "The songs were sung by Americans but they
could easily have been written by us as Iraqis."

Vappu is 2 parts carnival, 1 part dive bar and 100% good, clean
entertainment. After wandering around downtown yesterday afternoon
where I got to see a tractor pull in front of Zetor [the bar named
after the tractor manufacturer and is filled with tractor kitsch] and
scores of people just warming up for the evening drinkfest, we went to
a small barbeque with some friends. We missed the capping downtown but
the evening was perfect for grilling outside on the lawn. I made a
double batch of my sister's potato
casserole, all of which disappeared without a trace in no time at
all. Francis, the host, made some jell-o shots since someone had
brought jell-o back from a recent trip to Canada and they were so
strong that they were watery or, well, vodka-y. The big idea was to
take them downtown and give them out to cute girls. Single guys crack
me up sometimes. :)
We didn't get too horribly drunk last night so we made the trip down
to Kaivopuisto park and, wow, what a scene. I took a bunch of pictures
that I'll get online later this week as I think they'll do a much
better job of describing Vappu without words. While we were sitting on
the couch after we waddled home from the park, the sound of a sick
tuba came through the window. When we got up and looked out the
window, we saw the "Drunken Vappu Brass Band", a.k.a. Retuperän WBK from
HUT, parked across the street. They are the guys who drink
entirely too much beer and then play the music for the capping
ceremony. The guy on the hood of the wagon looks like he has had quite
enough "chemical impregnation". Ah, Vappu. :)

06/19/2004 01:25 AMSomeone just posted a track by the "Mario and Zelda Big Band" on a
private file-sharing site I'm on. This is a Japanese big band fronted
by a singer whose delivery reminds me of the frontwoman for Orquesta
De La Luz (my favorite Japanese salsa band), and backed by a huge horn
and winds section. They've got a CD of a live performance of music
from classic Nintendo games, with invented Japanese words and super
tight Latin jazz melodies. I've just ordered the scorchingly expensive
CD and while I wait for it to arrive, I guess I'll just keep this one
track in heavy rotation. It's fantastic.
