New Preview Release of Firefox
06/14/2004 09:06 PMMy name is Rafael Ebron, I’m a new addition to the Mozilla
Foundation and
helping spread the word. We would love to get a mention on your
blog.Tomorrow, the Mozilla Foundation is releasing Firefox 0.9, a new
preview
release of our next generation web browser. Firefox 0.9 is the
“feature
complete” version of Firefox, and includes a number of exciting
new features
(new default theme, easy migration from Internet Explorer, new
extensions
framework) as well as a big reduction in download size (now just 4.7
MB on
Windows) and numerous bug fixes, security and speed improvements.Later
this week, we’ll also be releasing Mozilla 1.7, the lastest
version of
our Internet suite (including web browser, mail client, IRC client,
HTML
editor) and Thunderbird 0.7 (our new standalone email client). Our
friends
at Lindows and Disruptive Innovations also just announced the release
of
version 0.3 of their Mozilla-based standalone HTML editing tool, Nvu
(more
information about Nvu 0.3 is available www.nvu.com/download.html).

Netscape 7 Preview Release 1
06/05/2002 07:50 AMTalk about sibling rivalry! Although everyone's talking about
Mozilla's imminent version 1.0 release, Netscape refuses to be left
behind. Hence, Netscape has released a preview of its next-generation
browser, Netscape 7. We got our hands on Netscape 7 Preview Release 1
and were pleasantly surprised. This browser keeps the best of the
recent Mozilla builds, including the browser itself and the e-mail
client, while adding some useful tools, such as an integrated,
full-featured version of AOL Instant Messenger. If the final release
(due out later this summer), stays this solid and scores high on our
official performance tests, it might finally outsurf Internet
Explorer.

Review: Firefox Preview Release
09/22/2004 10:06 AMLinux users have a lot of choices in the Internet browser category
these days, including Mozilla, Konqueror, Opera, and Epiphany, among
others. Now there is also Mozilla Firefox, a leaner browser than its
sibling, Mozilla 1.7. Firefox just had its preview release last week
and already has been downloaded more than a million times. I reviewed
the new version, and found Firefox's simple interface gets you the
information you want without distracting you with options.

The PithHelmet adds
some some basic but powerful content filtering to Apple's Safari

other potential uses as well (blocking Flash, Shockwave or horrible
midi loops).
It works with Safari beta v64 also.

07/28/2004 03:18 PMDeveloper adnX Software announced on Wednesday the release of
CutX, a Safari extension that
adds new preference options for blocking pornographic media. When CutX
comes across one of its banned keywords on a Web page or in the site's
URL, it can either hide all the images on the page or block access to
it. You can add keywords to the list or import them from another
application as well as save its preferences at the multi-user level. A
trial version is now available for download from the adnX Web site; it
does not password-protect the preference settings until you pay the
€19 (US$22.89) license fee. CutX requires Mac OS X v10.3 and

Pennsylvania's Porn Blocking Law Case
Begins
Pennsylvania's Porn Blocking Law Case
Begins
01/07/2004 06:37 PMWe've written before about how civil liberties groups are
suing
the attorney general for a law that forces ISPs to block access to
sites they decide have child pornography on them. Today,
the
case began, and a fairly compelling argument was made. The
problem with this case is that people hear "child porn" and
immediately decide that anything that stops it is good. Stopping
child porn obviously
is a good and noble goal - but this law
doesn't do that and has a ridiculous amount of collateral damage.
What the law should be, is that if a site is discovered with child
porn, the site itself should be taken offline and those responsible
should be tried for breaking the law. Instead, what this law does is
force ISPs in Pennsylvania to
block access to those sites. In
other words, the sites remain online - but people using certain ISPs
are blocked from accessing those sites. In cases where the site is on
a shared server, every other site on that server are also blocked -
even if they have nothing to do with the child porn. The Pennsylvania
attorney general insists that this is the right way to go, but doesn't
explain why they can't focus on catching those actually responsible
for the child porn rather than using this other, ineffective and
troublesome solution instead. This is the equivalent of the state
discovering a crack house, but instead of shutting down the crack
house and arresting those responsible, they just have the police come
and put up a big barrier blocking the road from everyone - even others
who happen to live on the same street. Even worse, they won't tell
those who live on the street that they've been blocked or tell them
why. They just stop letting them go home.

Federal Judge Dumps Pennsylvania ISP
Porn Blocking Law
Federal Judge Dumps Pennsylvania ISP
Porn Blocking Law
09/10/2004 01:18 PMWe've written before about a Pennsylvania law that
require
d ISPs to block anyone from accessing child porn. There were
obvious problems with this law. It's good that Pennsylvania wants to
stop child porn, but putting the burden on the ISPs is the wrong way
to go. ISPs, of course, are just the pipe. They shouldn't have to
worry about what their users are, or are not, accessing. It was also
problematic that Pennsylvania was using a ban-list that no one was
allowed to review to make sure it was fair. The biggest problem,
however, was that ISPs blocking sites ended up blocking other,
perfectly legitimate sites that were simply hosted on shared servers.
Now, a federal judge has decided that's simply too big a cost and
has said the law
needs to go. What still doesn't make sense, is that if
Pennsylvania was able to identify all of these child porn sites, why
were they wasting time getting ISPs to block them, rather than going
after those who were actually
responsible for running and
hosting the sites, and get them taken down that way?

An interesting perspective from a fellow Gnomie who believes that
IE has finally had it, pure and simple. He even goes so far as to
point to what the US-CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team) is
suggesting for Internet users. “It is time for national leaders
to get their heads out of the sand and recognize this threat to their
[our] national and economic security, [and to begin] cooperating on a
global basis to deny access…
Why does anyone use Internet Explorer?
Why does anyone use Internet Explorer?
04/16/2005 04:57 AMRecently, our church made the switch to a new Web hosting service that
offered us a database-driven site that we can keep updated through a
Web interface. Strangely enough, the Web interface operates only under
Internet Explorer, although it appears to be written in PHP. I've
tried using the interface with both Firefox and Konqueror. It sort of
works, but I need it to really work, so I'm stuck with IE. (Maybe
that's why I'm the church's unofficial Web master.) After working with
the world's most popular Web browser, I wonder why so many people put
up with it.
RIP Internet Explorer?
RIP Internet Explorer?
07/16/2004 04:49 PMIt's hard to imagine that anyone would continue to use Internet
Explorer faced as it is with such massive security issues. If it were
a car rather than a browser, it would have been scrapped. But despite
very good reasons for moving browsers, people still aren't. Why?
There are a multitude of reasons but by far the simplest is that
average Joe doesn't know what the hell browser security issues are, or
even that the browser is just a piece of software used for accessing
the Internet. Thanks to Microsoft's spectacular decision (causing it
to fall foul of competition law) to bundle Explorer with Windows,
people don't know anything of any other browser. To many people,
Explorer is the Internet.
