MP3 market looks bright for Apple
MP3 market looks bright for Apple
04/13/2005 11:03 AMApple Computer will continue to dominate the MP3 player market, which
is projected to grow from an installed base of 16.2 million last year
to 56.1 million by 2010.
JupiterResearch, a division of Jupitermedia Corporation, today
reported that U.S. shipments of MP3 players will grow 35% to 18.2
million in 2005 and maintain a compound annual growth rate of over 10%
through 2010, reaching an installed base of 56.1 million by then, up
from 16.2 million in 2004. MP3 players will reach critical mass this
year, fueling demand for digital music services and stores.
"Apple shows no signs of losing momentum," said Michael Gartenberg, VP
and Research Director at JupiterResearch. "The iPod is a consumer
phenomenon. Apple dominates this sector and will dominate portable MP3
player growth over the medium term," added Gartenberg. Mostly due to
the iPod's success, JupiterResearch has raised its near-term forecast,
but projects that flash-based player shipments will surpass those of
hard-drive models in 2007.
The forecast appears in the newly published report, "U.S. Portable
Music Device Forecast, 2005-2010."

Apple to bite into gaming market?
Apple to bite into gaming market?
04/08/2005 12:00 PMNeilsen Entertainment on Thursday revealed results of a study
concluding that men spend more money on video games than on music.
According to Neilsen spending on games has become the second ranked
purchased category for males behind DVDs and in front of CDs, MP3 and
music purchases.
As we can see in the figures from Nintendo and Sony for the first few
days of sales of the companies new handheld systems, game and console
sales are going well. Sony managed to snag 500,000 customers of its
PlayStation Portable (PSP) within the first two days of its North
American release, generating over $150 million at retailers. The
company boasted that what makes the $150 million mark "all the more
spectacular," is that "PSP sales were achieved during a traditionally
slower non-holiday season launch, and during a period when many
retailers were closed for Easter."
The launch of PSP was everything the company had hoped for, according
to Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Kaz Hirai.
"In only two weeks, PSP is having an immediate impact across the
entire industry as consumers are clearly voting it the product of the
year in 2005."
Nintendo sold nearly 87,000 units of the Nintendo DS in the first two
days alone in the UK. Several retailers in the UK opened at midnight
so DS fans could be the first to purchase the device. As of launch
time in the UK of the DS, Nintendo sold more than 3 million units
worldwide. At the end of March, the company announced that sales in
the UK surpassed 500,000 since the March 11 release.
"The launch of Nintendo DS in the UK has been an unprecedented
success; breaking all expected sales figures and even exceeding our
expectations. Nintendo fans, new and old, have embraced the Nintendo
DS and have left no doubt that it is the new must have handheld
console," Nintendo UK General Manager David Yarnton said. "Nintendo
set out to create a new way of hand-held gaming, offering an
innovative and enjoyable experience and with the new Nintendo DS, and
we have certainly accomplished this."
The success of the Nintendo DS has even helped Nintendo prepare for
the launch of its upcoming Nintendo World Store set to open in New
York City this spring. The store will allow visitors to try out new
and unreleased games for Nintendo DS, Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy
Advance SP at sampling bars and interactive stations. The two-story
mega-complex will also be the new home of Pokémon Center and will host
a myriad of Nintendo merchandise, accessories, DVDs and Pokémon
trading cards.
With the gaming market so strong and continually growing, why doesn't
Apple break into the burgeoning $35 billion annual global video game
market? Well, maybe it plans to.
According to an anonymous report, MacRumors.com was told that Apple
and ATI have been discussing either creating or purchasing a game
development unit. Creating a games division could help attract more
PC users to switch to the Macintosh platform. The website also noted
that Apple appears serious about improving gaming performance on the
Mac as recent reports have noted that Apple, ATI and NVidia are
actively recruiting developers to improve OpenGL performance.
Since game sales are above and beyond sales of CDs, digital music, and
other music purchases, perhaps Apple would be wise to break into the
increasingly popular (not to mention, incredibly profitable) gaming
market... just in case it doesn't reach the forcasted 23.5 million
iPod sales mark in 2006, or continue to have one million downloaded
songs per day from the iTunes Music Store.

Apple gets aggressive in Korean MP3
market
Apple gets aggressive in Korean MP3
market
02/01/2005 09:36 PMApple is reported to have raised the stakes in the Korean MP3 player
market by announcing yesterday that it will lower the price of its
iPod only in Korea.
According to a report in the Joon Ang Daily, the discounts are only
for Apple's hard-disk drive music players and exclude the iPod
Shuffle. The report also claims local representatives asked the media
to "keep quiet" about the price cuts, saying that headquarters feared
opposition from other Asian countries.
The lower prices of iPods give Apple a competitive edge in both
flash-memory and hard-disk drive digital music player markets. At
125,400 won ($122), the 512-megabyte model of the iPod Shuffle is less
than Reigncom's 256-MB model, which was only recently lowered from
187,000 won to 149,000 won. A 20-gigabyte iPod now costs 363,000 won,
instead of 418,000 won. The iRiver hard-disk model has only 5 GB of
memory for the same price.
"It seems that Apple has chosen Korea as the battleground because they
want to get their grips on the local market here before they deal with
Korean MP3 makers abroad," said an official at Samsung Electronics in
the news article. He said that Apple currently has less than 1 percent
of the local MP3 market, which is why it seeks a larger share.
The Joon Ang Daily reports that although domestic companies claim that
they are not worried, they admit that Apple's presence is pressing
them to lower costs as well. Reigncom lowered its hard-disk drive
player prices last week. Meanwhile, they are looking at foreign
markets, saying that the domestic market for MP3 players is already on
the verge of saturation.

Apple leads in booming global MP3 market
Apple leads in booming global MP3 market
06/22/2005 01:54 AMApple is the leader in worldwide MP3 sales with 30.2 percent of the
combined HDD and Flash-based MP3 market -- a market which recorded a
revenue increase of 200 per cent to reach approximately $4.5 billion
in 2004.
In-Stat released a report today that cited falling prices, the
availability of legitimate subscription and pay-per-download online
music sites, smaller hard disk drives and increasing Flash memory
capacities as reasons for the booming MP3 player market.
"As competition heats up, vendors are striving to differentiate
products by offering a wide range of price points, memory capacities
and features," said Stephanie Guza, In-Stat analyst. "As a result, we
are seeing increased segmentation. For example, the hard disk drive
(HDD) digital audio player segment can be subdivided into two
categories: the 1-inch or smaller segment and the 1.8-inch segment."
In-Stat also says that survey data shows that the percentage of U.S.
respondents owning a digital audio player has increased from 16% in
2001 to 25% in 2005.

04/15/2005 04:25 PMApple Computer has moved ahead of Toshiba to take the 5th position in
U.S. PC sales during the first quarter, according to preliminary
statistics released by Gartner Inc. today.
Gartner said despite disappointing results for most vendors in the
U.S. market in the first quarter, Apple's PC shipments in the U.S.
increased 45.1 percent in the first quarter. The growth of the iMac
and PowerBook categories were key drivers for the company during what
has always been a traditionally weak consumer quarter.
Worldwide PC shipments increased 10.3 percent in the first quarter of
2005, according to Gartner. Worldwide PC shipments totaled 50.4
million units in the first quarter of 2005, up from 45.7 million in
the same period last year. Dell's worldwide growth rate fell below 20
percent for the first time in ten quarters, pulled down by a weaker
performance in the U.S. market. Despite this, Dell's growth rate of
13.7 percent remained higher than the worldwide average, and it
extended its lead in the worldwide rankings.
Gartner said final statistics will be available soon to clients of
Gartner's PC Quarterly Statistics Worldwide by Region program.
