Postini: Half of all e-mail requests rejected

Postini: Half of all e-mail requests
rejected
07/08/2004 09:09 AM

Antispam company Postini Inc. said that it is now rejecting more than half of all attempts to send e-mail to its customers, due in part to increased activity from compromised home computers that have been turned into "zombies" for sending unsolicited commercial ("spam") e-mail. The company is dropping 53 percent of all e-mail connections that use the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) without reading the content of the e-mail messages. That's an almost 20 percent increase since the company began aggregating information about troublesome Internet addresses from across its customer base, said Andrew Lochart, director of product marketing at Postini.

Half-male, half-female, all crab

Half-male, half-female, all crab 06/17/2005 03:35 PM
David Pescovitz: Fishermen caught a crab in the lower Chesapeake Bay that's literally half male, half female. Among other differences, male blue crabs have deep blue claws while females' claw tips look like they were painted with red nail polish. The fishermen noticed that this particular crab had one of each. Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science say that the condition, known as bilateral gynandromorphism, is caused by a "chromosomal mishap." Studying the rare animal could increase understanding of crab sexual development and breeding behavior. From the Washington Post:

Before turning over the crab to the scientists, (boat captain David) Johnson and other watermen conducted their own experiment into its sex life, with bewildering results. They dropped a female crab, which was just about ready to mate, into its tank.

First, the half-and-half crab cradled the female under his legs, as a male crab would do in preparation for mating.

Then, the crab seemed to lose interest in the female and let her go, Johnson said.

Then a day later . . .

"He ate half of her," Johnson said.

Larry O'Brien says "It is a mistake for UI designers to heed debates such as going on in Scoble's comments on UI requests for Longhorn."

Oh, don't worry, I doubt the Aero team will listen to me. But, my goal wasn't really to get the Aero team to listen to me anyway. It was to get the market to think about what they'd like to see in Longhorn. Goal achieved!

My coworkers were chiding me during the day, though. Everyone has an opinion about settings in Windows.

Since I've been using the Powerbook (which I still need to replace with a newer one now that the "speed bump" is official), I've drastically changed my e-mail habits (personal mail, not work mail). In doing so, I wonder if I'm unusual in this respect. Previously, I was using mutt for e-mail on my IBM Thinkpad running Linux. If you've not tried it, mutt is really the king of all console-based mail programs. It excels at making it very easy...
