Ten points for ingenuity - zero points for common sense:
Hämeen Sanomat (Finnish, translation mine): "An 80-year old man built a machine gun out of a power drill. As he went to the police to get a license for it, to his great surprise he was charged with a breach of the firearms law. The court decided that he was acting in good faith, so he was found not guilty, but the gun was confiscated, and is likely to end up in a gun museum.

"The weapon uses .22 caliber ammunition and can fire up to 420 rounds/minute."

(Click here to see the gun in action - 4.3 MBytes MPEG-PS. Quicktime does not seem to understand it, but VLC and MPlayer seem to work well. I have no idea who owns the copyright on this (a good reason to embed, say, a CC license to your files), but I'll take it off if someone asks.)

Howard Rheingold, author of Smart Mobs and a lot of other wonderful books about the social effects of new technologies, recounts his frustrating customer service experience when he took his broken Treo 600 to Sprint:
[T]he indifferent young man I talked to at the Sprint store in the Bonair shopping center in San Rafael, California then said that they didn't do repairs or diagnostics and didn't know who did. He actually SURFED THE WEB to give me the phone number of Palm. So I called Palm, who told me they could deal with everyone's Treo 600 except Sprint's. They directed me to a third party repair service whose voicemail sends you to the web.

PalmOne Offers Treo 650 Patch for Sprint

PalmOne Offers Treo 650 Patch for Sprint
Users; Still No DUN
03/23/2005 09:30 AM

PalmOne has released an update for Sprint Treo 650 users which aims to fix spotty voice quality and make the flash file system more space-efficient. What it doesn't do is add dial-up networking (DUN), a critical oversight that continues to be a font of bullshit from both Sprint and PalmOne. The DUN functionality, if you recall, was promised back in October to be coming 'soon,' but it's now five months later with no official DUN support in sight. Of course, the community unlocked DUN via an unofficial patch months ago.

I have no idea why Sprint and PalmOne continue to give customers the run-around, but for an organization that's already teetering near irrelevancy, PalmOne would do well to offer a better excuse than "[we are] continuing to test our DUN implementation."

The New AT&T Wireless Is Sprint

The New AT&T Wireless Is Sprint 05/18/2004 03:04 PM
This isn't a huge surprise, considering that everyone expected this move back in March, but AT&T has made it official that they've signed an MVNO agreement with Sprint to use their network for their own wireless carrier offering. Just like Sprint's deal with Virgin Mobile, Sprint gives AT&T the network, and AT&T does all the branding. They plan to offer bundled offerings that tie the mobile phone service to their local, long distance and VoIP offerings - all of which makes sense. What still hasn't be made clear, however, is if they'll go back to using the AT&T Wireless name. They get the rights back as soon as the current AT&T Wireless completes the deal to be acquired by Cingular (late this year). However, the AT&T Wireless name has such a bad reputation these days, they may be better off not doing so. Besides, the level of confusion among consumers probably isn't worth it. Still, it is amusing to trace the history of AT&T's wireless offerings from a startup they bought, to something they spun out, to something they wish they had again. Of course, maybe they get the last laugh. They got a lot of cash in spinning out AT&T Wireless and now they'll have a wireless offering without actually having to run a network. Either way, it's a bit amusing to see what will more or less amount to a "new entrant" in the space just as everyone was calling for the entire US wireless carrier market to consolidate.

Sprint PCS, AT&T Wireless Roam Airports

Sprint PCS, AT&T Wireless Roam Airports 04/19/2004 09:34 AM
With a handful of major and minor airports, the two cell carriers tiny portfolio will have bilateral roaming: This tiny deal represents airports as large as Denver and properties like Salt Lake City that aren't up and running yet, and shows the incremental and tedious steps taken to stitch together networks. The significant fact is that the two networks, which currently mostly resell Wayport locations, are willing to work directly together with bilateral roaming. It's part of a strategy: neither company could possibly have more than a few hundred monthly unlimited customers because it's cheaper to pay Wayport or Boingo Wireless for unlimited access to the subset of locations and then pay as you go on occasion in certain airports. AT&T Wireless charges the absurd price of $70 per month. Sprint PCS, however, is starting their build-out in a big way, and AT&T Wireless resells Cometa locations (though it doesn't list them in its Wi-Fi directory), which aren't yet part of Wayport's networks....

Sprint Still Exploring Wireless
Broadband Offerings

Sprint Still Exploring Wireless
Broadband Offerings
05/25/2004 04:03 AM
Most people have assumed that Sprint was going to wait out this round of wireless broadband offerings (especially after they had so much trouble with their last attempt at a fixed wireless offering) and then look to leapfrog folks like Verizon by going straight to an EV-DV-based offering that would offer higher speed wide area wireless broadband while also giving them the ability to upgrade their voice network with the same equipment. However, as the buzz gets stronger about all the new wireless broadband offerings, people are starting to wonder if Sprint won't be able to wait that long and, instead, will jump on board with a different broadband wireless technology that's ready now. One analyst declared that Sprint would definitely follow in Verizon Wireless' footsteps and look to offer a nationwide EV-DO offering that would offer speeds in the 200 to 500 kbps range, but do little to advance their voice offering (the DO is "data only" as opposed to the DV, which stands for "data voice"). Sprint quickly responded saying they haven't made a decision yet, and are still looking at both EV-DO and EV-DV and Flarion's FLASH-OFDM technology that has been getting so much press lately with Nextel's trials (which, while being much faster in terms of data rates leads to other issues, such as it being quite a different beast to deal with from their other offerings). Still, it's looking like the wireless carriers, who had been hoping to stay on the wireless broadband sidelines a little longer, are beginning to realize that they need to be making their bets pretty soon, or there may be nothing left at all.
