Why are we angry with the Philippines?
Why are we angry with the Philippines?
07/23/2004 11:42 PMWhile I've been "oot and aboot" (as the Canadians say) with N505WT
the natives seem to have become restless and angry with the
Philippines. From what I read the Filipinos were in Iraq on a
"humanitarian" mission. One of their guys was kidnapped so they
went home. So now we Americans are pissed off that they caved
into the demands of the kidnappers/beheaders. None of the
newspaper articles that I saw, however, questioned the original
purpose. Though some Iraqis appear on CNN to complain that they
don't have air-conditioning and 24/7 running water it is hard to see
them as a hardship case in a world where many people have never had
A/C or running water. Shouldn't "humanitarian" missions go to
places where either (a) folks are really doing badly, (b) folks are
genuinely grateful for assistance, (c) folks are living right next
door to us (charity begins at home), or (d) all of the above?

cellular service in the Philippines is so popular. Well using some old
techniques some individuals have been rounded up and put in jail for
scamming the phone company out of some very serious money. [The Register]

School for Hackers
School for Hackers
08/02/2004 03:55 PMA presentation on how to be the first to exploit new flaws in Web
server software was deemed "just as cool for white hats as for
black hats" attending the Defcon 12 conference here over the
weekend. The session offered new tools, as well as insight into the
mindset of the so-called black hat, or malicious hacker, community,
said one enthusiastic attendee, who works for a security consulting
company that secures Web servers for the financial sector. The two
presenters, German security consultants "FX" and Halvar
Flake, spoke about taking advantage of new-found holes, known as
zero-day Web-based vulnerability exploitation.
Hacking Advice
Finding vulnerabilities to exploit is real work, the presenters said.
The large, packed crowd listened to them talk about "making
script kiddies into real hackers," referring to novice hacker
wannabes who simply use other hackers' tools to deface Web sites. The
pair outlined the procedural steps of drilling down and finding Web
server weaknesses--effectively offering tips to those who want to do
so, but also providing knowledgeable warning to those who guard
against such action.

Philippine Bows to Terrorists
Philippine Bows to Terrorists
07/12/2004 09:03 PM
First Spain and now Philippine.
Are they out of their minds? At least South Korea managed to
hold steady despite
all the noise from the selfish peace and justice loving
liberals. They are selfish
because they are ruining the country to satisfy their emotional and
ideological needs.
I believe that the war against Iraq was unjustified but it's insane
to give in to
terrorists' demands regardless of circumstances. Even if
Philippine was going
to pull out troops anyway, it should have waited to avoid appearing
as if they were
pulling out because of the terrorist's demands.
As to saving the lives of kidnap victims, I wonder what the
Philippine government
would have done if the terrorism and kidnapping took place within
Philippine?
Give in?Rewarding terrorists will only encourage more
terrorism.
What will they do when terrorists start popping up everyewhere
because terrorism offers
better result than demonstrations? What? Tell them
to stand in a
line so you can service them properly?
Is a civilian's life more sacred than a solder's life?
Bullshit. On war
against terrorism, everyone is on the frontline. I am on the
frontline of war
against terrorism alongside my 10 year old son, my wife, my
parents, my friends, and
collegues. We are fighting in our homes, neighborhoods,
freeways, shopping malls,
restaurants. And the war is on 24 hours a day every
day. Terrorism can
step in anywhere and any time if they think they can scare people
into giving them
what they want.
Giving in to terrorist demands, even if it's just for an ice cream
cone or a few dollars,
amounts to feeding a beast that can breed like rats. Giving
in to demands of
terrorists far away amounts to thinking that one can run away from
terrorism.
What a silly idea. It's as silly as trying to build a wall
around Middle East
or banning Islamic religion.
