The Phillies Spammer

The Phillies Spammer 01/04/2005 08:49 AM

Trial begins for Phillies fan accused of e-mail hacking: Being a crazy sports fan is one thing. Spoofing the email address of area sportwriters and spamming everyone, apparently, is not.

But yesterday, Carlson sat alone in a federal courtroom in Philadelphia, the accused boo-bird who hijacked the e-mail addresses of area sportswriters and sent out tens of thousands of anti-Phillies cyber-rants in their names.

"Like a lot of people, he was not happy about the fact that the Phillies were not winning," Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. Levy said in his opening statement to the jury. "But Mr. Carlson... decided to do something more. He launched an electronic attack against the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Newspapers Inc."

They're charging him with identify theft under federal law. He sent 100,000 emails, one of which resulted in 60,000 bounces to a local sports columnist.

Spamming Phillies Fan Found Guilty

Spamming Phillies Fan Found Guilty 01/06/2005 05:24 PM
A while back, we wrote about the angry Philadelphia Phillies fan who was so upset with how the baseball team was run that he hijack ed computers around the world, sending out an angry spam denouncing Phillies management, and to top it all off, forging the return address to make it look like it was a local sports reporter who wrote the email. Not a huge surprise, but the guy has now been found guilty of "fraud, identity theft, and computer hacking." The best part, though, is his defense (he defended himself). He claims "he did not believe what he did was a crime or that it would cause harm to the newspapers." And you wonder why they tell people not to defend themselves in court.

METS Meetings Build Support

Last month about 100 librarians gathered for the second METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard) meeting to discuss strategies for implementing the emerging standard. METS provides a way to assemble all the relevant files and metadata associated with a digital object, including rights information and information about how the item was digitized. Once consolidated into a package, the digital object can then be shared with other libraries. The METS standard can be used for text material of course, but also for images, audio and video files and even non-digitized objects such as print books. Discussions at the April meeting focused on several unresolved issues surrounding the standard. One is whether the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' "Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records" would have an impact on the METS standard. The group also discussed whether MPEG-21, an emerging standard that includes a Digital Item Declaration Language, would be better suited to libraries' needs. Whether METS becomes the common standard among libraries or MPEG-21, it was agreed that libraries need a way to capture all the files and metadata associated with the objects in their collections in a format that can be easily shared. Another METS meeting is slated for July 12, to be held at the British Library. For more information on that meeting, click here.
