Everyone that is left still running Internet Explorer should run Windows Update immediately. Microsoft has issued a interim patch to fix the s ecurity hole that was allowing some websites to infect a users machine by simply visiting the web site. [ZDNet]

The sense of urgency is noted on Microsoft's own site that describes the security bug when it states: SKIP THE DETAILS GO TO WINDOWS UPDATE NOW

Mozilla issue patch for security hole 07/09/2004 08:40 AM
Just as everyone was about ready to ditch Internet Explorer in favour of the less popular but theoretically less bug prone alternatives from Mozilla, a patch was issued to fix a recently discovered security hole in Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird. The bug, which only affects users running one of the above products on a Microsoft Windows platform, may allow an attacker to cause a machine to freeze. Although not necessarily hugely damaging to the client machine, this is still a blow to the Mozilla Foundation, as it will cause confidence in their products to drop.

NetGear patched a gaping security hole that used a backdoor username and password--by changing it to another, easily discovered username and password (in German): Heise Security reports that a recently reported security hole that affects NetGear systems among others has been patched in a way that doesn't increase security. The site suggests that this might be reason enough (at least in Germany?) to return the product for a refund. NetGear's download page says the patch "Fixed illegal user access the WEB configuration utility." See more discussion of this patch on Slashdot....

Two weeks ago, I wondered out loud about the top 10 worst IT business decisions ever made and nominated HP's decision to follow DEC down the road to oblivion for top spot. Today I'd like to suggest that the U.S. Defense Department's continued use of Microsoft's software is likely to top a future list of this kind. The equation here is simple. First, recognize that Microsoft's software security depends crucially on keeping its source code secret. That's not a comment from an anti-Microsoft bigot -- it's the testimony given under oath by Microsoft vice president Jim Allchin. Even limited release of Microsoft's code, Allchin told judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's federal court in May 2002, would threaten national security because the code is both seriously flawed and widely used in the Defense Department. But consider that only nine months later, in February 2003, Microsoft announced an agreement giving communist China full access to the source code for Windows and related tools.

AP - U.S. Open officials knew they were in trouble when tiny blades of grass on the seventh green at Shinnecock Hills wilted before their eyes Sunday morning. And this was two hours before the final round began. It wasn't long before the 189-yard "Redan" hole turned into the disaster they feared.
