Decompression bombs: email attachments

02/11/2004 06:56 PMHere's an interesting security noodle from Yoz Grahame: some
(meaningless) data is highly compressible using standard compression
algorithms -- what would it do your computer if the payloads in
automatically decompressed messages went from 7kb to 100gb?
Here's an example scenario: A mail arrives at your
super-barbed-wire-protected mail gateway. The gzip-compressed
attachment - only 7k big - is grabbed by the anti-virus scanner,
looking for any suspicious signatures. It starts to decompress it and
BANG - the resulting file, over 100 gigabytes, crashes the AV scanner
and completely fills the hard drive partition in the process.
Fortunately, a good number of the AV scanners that AERAsec tested
aren't too vulnerable, but some require patching. Similarly, sending a
gzipped-HTML bomb to a browser will crash a fair few of them. Not so
scary, then, but nifty in an admirably-nasty way.

Verizon CEO Positively Shocked That
People Want Service!
04/18/2005 04:16 AMWhen you're CEO of a company, you often end up making statements
designed to support that company's position, even if the arguments may
be a little bit disingenuous. However, when you go so far beyond
reasonable that just about everyone scoffs at you, it might be time to
look for a new job. We thought maybe we'd seen the best example of
this when an executive from 3 in the UK claimed that customers must be
"nuts"
to want to access the full internet on their phones. However, it
appears that Ivan Seidenberg, Verizon's CEO, has easily topped that
statement. I actually saw this article in the newsprint copy early
Saturday morning and thought Seidenberg must have been misquoted as
the quotes seem so ridiculous. However, it's tough to figure out
under what context these statements could possibly make sense. What's
clear, however, is that he believes that us lowly commoners are a real
pain in the ass for
actually wanting any kind of "service" at
all -- whether it's wireless broadband or mobile phone service.
The initial part, trashing muni-WiFi isn't a surprise. He's done that
befor
e, though calling it "one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard,"
is a bit extreme. The reason cities are looking to offer muni-WiFi is
because
they don't feel adequately served by companies like
Verizon. However, Seidenberg's complete lack of interest in what
customers actually want becomes abundantly clear a bit later when he
says: "Why in the world would you think your (cell) phone would work
in your house? The customer has come to expect so much. They want it
to work in the elevator; they want it to work in the basement." This
from the CEO of the company who's own subsidiary has been running a
national mobile phone service ad campaign with the slogan "Can You
Hear Me Now?" telling everyone that they should expect their mobile
phones to work everywhere.

John Scalzi's Old Man's War free for
service people in Iraq/Afghanistan
04/15/2005 03:35 PMCory Doctorow:
John Scalzi says, "Tor Books and I are doing something special with
Old Man's War, my current SF novel: We're offering a free
electronic edition (a 570kb .rtf file) for service people stationed in
Iraq and Afghanistan. We figure they're far from home and could use
some reading material.
"Service people in Iraq and Afghanistan can drop me an e-mail at
"omw@scalzi.com" and I'll send them the edition as an attached file.
If at all possible, they should send the request from their ".mil"
addresses and let me know their unit/general location so I know they
are in Iraq/Afghanistan. This is meant for people serving in a war
zone far from home, so I ask others to please respect that.
"Special kudos to Tor Books for greenlighting this; it's more proof of
their forward-thinking in the book arena, and evidence of their
generally being excellent people."

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AMBarry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman"
companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to
dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a
travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire
non-travel companies. So, in order to
prove that he's not
running a travel company...
he's
going to show them what it means to really run a travel
company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel
properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into
one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties
as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those
other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the
synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella.
Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't
as high as he had hoped.

08/27/2004 01:47 PMCongrats to Roland and Boris and.....
They've just launched Bryght -
a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was
in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving
there.
Vancouver is hot.
Here's Roland's post....
Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal
service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with
Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this
one. Yes, we are all Bryght
guys :-) !
We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to
give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required,
no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at
Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know
of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght
site, please contact us.
Whither StreamLine you might ask?
StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we
still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging
platform.

PATRIOT Act Quietly Expanded
12/02/2003 12:56 AMFrom the linked article: Congress approved a bill on Friday that
expands the reach of the Patriot Act, reduces oversight of the FBI and
intelligence agencies and, according to critics shifts the balance of
power away from the legislature and the courts. A provision of an
intelligence spending bill will expand the power of the FBI to
subpoena business documents and transactions from a broader range of
business -- everything from libraries to travel agencies to eBay --
without first seeking approval from a judge.

Folk Process defined and expanded upon
Folk Process defined and expanded upon
07/29/2004 05:05 AMHot on the heels of the attack on Woody Guthrie's memory (in the form
of a lawsuit against political parodists who used his "This Land is
Your Land" as part of a Flash movie) is this wonderful piece on what
Pete Seeger called "the folk process" -- the way that traditional art
has been made by ripping, mixing and burning the art that preceded it.
Guthrie may be right that Pete Seeger was the first to coin the term
"folk process", but the process of oral song-transmission through
through variation and selection was being analyzed even before Pete
Seeger's birth in 1919. And the process itself has been operating as
long as there have been songs. The folk process was described, though
not so named, by Cecil Sharp in 1907: "[Development of a folk song]
involves the three principles of continuity, variation, and
selection."
