IMDb History

IMDb History 07/17/2004 02:59 PM

Internet Movie Database - Wikipedia: An interesting few paragraphs on the history of the IMDb.

The database started out in 1990 as a collection of shell scripts created by Col Needham which could be used to search the FAQs posted to the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.movies.

In 1993, a centralized e-mail interface for querying the database was created, and in 1994 this interface was extended to allow the submission of information as well. The database then moved to a Web-based interface, which initially ran on a network of mirrors with donated bandwidth. In 1996, the project was incorporated in the United Kingdom to form Internet Movie Database Ltd., and banner ads were added to the web site.

In April 1998, the company was bought by Amazon.com, the current owner; however, a number of the original creators, including Needham, remained as site managers.

How many great things in the world started as shell scripts somewhere? It's a hacker's world.

An IMDB footnote, myself.

An IMDB footnote, myself. 05/17/2004 07:26 AM
The title's somewhat literal as I'm a satisfied (and awed) user of the IMDB (Internet Movie DataBase) and I'm been tickled ever since Tim told me that I have a genuine personal IMDB profile after making the soundtrack to his movie, CrossWalk. I'm easily made happy. No shopping for my birthday will be needed this year. ...

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie

SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie 09/20/2004 06:52 AM
Not so long ago, there was a bit of a press frenzy over a novel that was being delivered via SMS text messaging in China. Well, to build off of that hype, a company has now bought the film rights to the story, and yes, they will be filming it in short segments which can be sent to mobile phones as well. While I do think mobile video content should be focused on shorter bits of content, given that the people viewing it are likely to be on the go and/or interrupted more frequently, I wonder how well you can hold the plot line of a movie that's broken into so many pieces.

There was mention the other night was of a rumoured upcoming movie starring Ben Stiller about, yes, dodgeball. Jeff Hemphill confirms it this morning with an e-mail linking to the IMDB entry for "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story." I'm guessing that's a guys night out, as Nicky may not be up for that one....

CC Brazil: The Movie

CC Brazil: The Movie 12/17/2004 06:33 PM
Earlier this spring, Creative Commons staff went down to Brazil to oversee the launch of one of the first country-specific licenses. There was a big event attended by Gilberto Gil, the Minister of Culture for Brazil, and a film crew followed everyone around for a couple days. The result is a nice little 11 minute film on the process of the licenses, the impact it could have on their culture, and reactions from the launch event. Watch it at the Internet Archive, and if you have your own videos like this to share, be sure to try out our CC Publisher app to add your films to the Archive as well.

If you didn't know already, Microsoft owns part of MSNBC. (Where do you think the MS of MSNBC comes from?) So, it may well be the Redmond company's secret weapon in pushing its Portable Media Centers.

Or maybe not. How many times have your kids in the back-seat of your car asked for the latest update on the Michael Jackson trial?

But, nevertheless, Apple should take note. And perhaps Pixar too.

Where are the movie aliens? 12/30/2003 08:51 PM
Every year we seem to get a few horror or sci-fi movies featuring aliens. What happened this year? I may be missing some, but the only 2003 major release movies that had some aliens in them were Dreamcatcher, Good Boy! and Scary Movie 3. One horror movie and two comedies. Just a coincidence or are aliens no longer cool?

VoIP: The Movie

VoIP: The Movie 09/17/2004 02:31 PM
This is almost painful. A broadband provider trying to push the concept of VoIP (no, they don't deserve any more publicity by being named here) has decided to start an advertising campaign for VoIP that involves a series of movie trailers about "VoIP: The Movie" which are designed to look like trailers from a thriller movie, and which aren't at all clear about what they're really advertising (though, the phone does seem to play a central part). Cue movie trailer voiceover voice: "No one can escape it, we're all slaves to it...."
