Interview with the creator of PHP,
Rasmus Lerdorf

In the end, what I think set PHP apart in the early days, and still does today, is that it always tries to find the shortest path to solving the web problem. It does not try to be a general-purpose scripting language and anybody looking to solve a web problem will usually find a very direct solution through PHP. Many of the alternatives that claim to solve the web problem are just too complex. When you need something up and working by Friday so you don't have to spend all weekend leafing through 800-page manuals, PHP starts to look pretty good.

The best interview yet. Link thanks to http://phpdeveloper.org/

Rasmus Lerdorf on PHP. 12/03/2003 07:24 PM
(A new IT Conversation.) "I really don't like programming. I built this tool to program less so that I could just reuse code." Ten years later, PHP is now running on the web servers of one third of all domains on the World Wide Web. Rasmus explains why this easy-to-use scripting language can power some of the Web's busiest sites including portions of Yahoo! that handle over 120 million unique visitors each month. PHP is scalable because of its "shared-nothing" architecture, unlike Java or similar virtual-machine runtime environments. Whether you're already a PHP user, or haven't yet taken the plunge, you'll enjoy this interview with its humble creator--a true pioneer of the open-source movement. You'll also hear what's in the works for the next major release, PHP 5.0, and why Rasmus believes the Web will become "the interface to everything."

3 more questions from corporate PHP users whose lawyers want a guarantee that PHP is free of any patented code or algorithms. Explaining yet again that, as an open source project, we do not have any means to provide such patent indemnification. Perhaps an addition to the "no warranty" clause in the PHP license is in order here which explicitly states that we can not possibly provide patent indemnification. This whole patent thing is getting out of hand. It is even popping up on the PHP mailing lists. Someone posted an algorithm recently and someone else piped up stating that he had patented that particular (obvious) algorithm years ago.

Interview with Google News Creator 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
The Online Journalism Review (OJR) has an in-depth interview with Krishna Bharat, the creator of Google News. (Here's a photo of the Google News team with the Webby Award they won.)There are no press releases on the browsable pages or news pages. We have a higher editorial responsibility on those because we're telling you where you should look. On the news pages, we do not intend to use press releases. We would never do anything to compromise the objectivity of the product. We don't even show advertising … we do this because we think it's useful. Making a press release available as part of the search results gives the full facts that were available to the reporter when they wrote it.I want this to be a force for a democracy. I want us to be an honest broker, and I want newspapers featured on our site to get traffic from us. … There's never been a more controversial time on the planet. I think it's great to be a news source at this point because there's so much hunger for news. You see a lot more diversity in the news coverage on our site than on others. I think the diversity is a mirror to the diversity of opinion there is worldwide. One of the things that makes us objective is we show all points of view. Even if you disagree with one, we give you both -- the majority and the minority point of view. The ones you don't agree with are education. It's nice to know what the other side is thinking. You'll see left-leaning ones as much as much as you see right-leaning ones. Frankly, the software doesn't know the difference between left and right, which is good.Google News is available in ten different national versions....

An interview with the creator of
Scorched Earth, Wendell T. Hicken
03/30/2005 09:21 PM

Those of you who cut your teeth on PC gaming in the early 1990s probably spent more than a little bit of time with the classic game Scorched Earth. When the game came up in a thread in Gaming, Extra Strength Caplets

, it sent more than one person down memory lane.

Written in Borland C++ and compiled using Turbo Assembler, the game landed in my floppy drive at a time when such things seemed almost magical. And, to be honest, playing it was kind of magical in a sense. It's one of the first games that I spent hours and hours playing on a "Pee Cee," and I found myself digging it again just in the past couple of weeks working on this interview.

The game's creator, Wendell T. Hicken, was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions for us. Read on for his take on game development, his current gaming habits, and the possibility of a future version of Scorched Earth.

Function

Getting Intimate With PHP's Mail()
Function
01/07/2003 02:46 PM
PHP provides a handy and convenient way to send email. As you probably already know, this is through the mail() function. This function is a great way to send mail using a simple and standard interface that hides the complexity and quirks of various system programs that are responsible for sending mail. (Sendmail and Qmail are two examples of popular mail programs. You would have to talk directly to the web servers mail program if the mail() function did not exist). This tutorial will introduce you to the basics of sending mail from PHP scripts. We will also develop a simple HTML form to help us work with variables.

"btn" I nearly gave this article a miss because it sounded like a rehash of the PHP manual. What I like about it is it also shows you how to call sendmail from PHP. Yeah, i never knew how to do this... i'm more of a Mac/Windows kinda guy.

Managing a Music Collection Using Visual
Basic Express and SQL Server Express
07/08/2004 11:46 PM
A problem that afflicts me (and I've noticed many of my brethren) is the need to create a program to solve a task when there are already many perfectly suitable programs on the market for free or for very little cash. The standard justification in my mind is that there isn't a program that does things the exact way I want them to. Now realistically, I tend to pick on programs that are within reach. After all, even if Word didn't suit my needs, I have no intention of writing my own word processing program from scratch. (Although at times, I keep thinking I could build a better version of Outlook ... yet I digress).

Such drives are commonly used in digital music players and sub-notebook computers. The new drive offers a 50-percent improvement in storage space over Toshiba's current highest capacity 1.8-inch hard-disk drive yet manages this without being physically larger. The major factor that contributed to this increase was an advancement made in a thin-film technology used for both the head and platter, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in Tokyo.
