High tech oven-mitts

High tech oven-mitts 07/08/2004 05:32 AM

This month's "Play" section in Wired reviews three super-sexy high-tech oven mitts -- a synthetic rubber one, a translucent silicone one, and a kevlar-and-nomex fingered glove adapted from a welder's glove. It's a sweet application of new materials science to housewares. Link (scroll to page-bottom)

Achieving that, what if, 100% of the kindergarten children were at least ready-to-read and understood the words; please, thank you, take turns, excuse me and I am sorry? How practical is this? Sharp Healsio Steam Oven

Sharp Healsio Steam Oven 03/28/2005 07:50 AM

sharp_healsio.jpgSharp's Healsio oven puts a spin on the traditional convention or microwave oven, using the power of steam heated to about 570 degrees to cook your food. The steam apparently reduces the total fat content by effectively melting it while still preserving the food's nutrients. Sharp even demonstrated toasting bread, proving that not everything comes out as glue. The oven allows the user to steam, grill, roast, bake, (broast, brible), defrost and reheat their food by spraying the steam directly onto the food. Sharp's press release goes into excruciating detail on how their new $1,100 oven works and the health benefits it offers. Launched in Singapore, it will reach North America later this year.

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven 08/23/2004 08:53 AM

sharp_steam5.jpg imageSharp has a new small oven that uses superheated steam to not only cook and reheat food, but melt excess salt and fat away from meats and other delicious dishes. Sharp quotes up to eight times as much fat removed by cooking a steak in the AX-HC1 ovens than frying in a pan, while reheating tempura and other fried foods removed up to 13% of their oil content.

Sharp will be releasing the oven in the US sometime soonish, although for now the $1,150 is Japan-only. I'm waiting for the oven that uses superheated steam to turn all my food into a nutritionless, guiltless slurry.

06/27/2004 04:44 AM

Seems telemarketers have largely ignored the do not call list. With nearly 65 million people who have signed up for do not call 429,000 have received at least 1 call and that's just the people that reported it. Seems the FCC could cash in if they would go out and collect the fines but some wonder if they have the teeth.

One advantage of living in Hawaii is most telemarketers don't bother but those that do usually call about 4am and when you get done screaming at them asking them if they know what time it is you never get a call back. [CNN Money]

The Latest Techie Complaints 04/15/2004 01:02 PM
So what does a techie have to complain about these days? It what must have been a fairly cathartic column, one tech columnist just tossed a few of his tech complaints into a single column that doesn't even bother trying to tie them all together. The three big complaints: (1) every time he finds a product he likes, it gets bought by another larger company (and, he implies, the larger company then kills what he liked about the product) (2) it's increasingly difficult to actually find stuff you want on a search engine and (3) plug and play often plugs, but doesn't play. The best part, though, is his description of the inevitable phone call after the new device doesn't work: "Is your computer turned on? Are you connected using a USB or firewire cable? Do you have more than a fifth-grade education?" Something about tax day seems to bring out people's complaining nature.

FCC Swamped By Number Portability
Complaints
01/29/2004 03:49 AM
By this point, it's pretty well known that wireless number portability didn't go so smoothly over the past couple of months. However, now the FCC has admitted the extent of the problems, saying that they've recei ved 4,750 complaints concerning number portability. Considering the total number of switchers, that's really not a huge percentage - but it still doesn't speak well to the efforts the wireless carriers put into the process. The FCC is now looking to see if any regulations were broken. Considering that many carriers were clearly dragging their feet on getting ready for this (partly as a ploy to ask for more delays), it seems likely that the FCC will fine a few carriers for screwing around when they should have been preparing (as we expected back in May). It still seems like a strategically backwards move not to have embraced something that customers clearly wanted - and which was clearly going to come sooner or later.
