Great interview with They Might Be Giants from Wired Magazine, about
the a compilation album of patriotic songs they've put together to
benefit MoveOn.org. TMBG recorded a cover of "Tippecanoe and Tyler
Too" for the disc!
We did an electronic version of a song from the 1840s called
"Tippecanoe and Tyler Too." It was originally used during the
Harrison-Van Buren presidential race, and it's really harsh, like a
drinking song. It was the very first hip campaign song! Lots of the
music on the compilation was recorded specifically for the album, and
all of it will be new material.

many people still feel threatened by it. Send us your views.

MoveOn won't
MoveOn won't01/22/2004 03:25 PM MoveOn has launched a campaign to convince CBS to change its policy.
Here's the polispam they'd like people to send:
Subject:
The ad CBS will not air
Dear friend,
During this year's Super Bowl, you'll see ads sponsored by beer
companies, tobacco companies, and the Bush White House. But you won't
see the winning ad in MoveOn.org Voter Fund's Bush in 30 Seconds ad
contest. CBS refuses to air it.
Meanwhile, the White House and Congressional Republicans are on the
verge of signing into law a deal which Senator John McCain (R-AZ) says
is custom-tailored for CBS and Fox, allowing the two networks to grow
much bigger. CBS lobbied hard for this rule change; MoveOn.org members
across the country lobbied against it; and now the MoveOn.org ad has
been rejected while the White House ad will be played. It looks an
awful lot like CBS is playing politics with the right to free speech.
Of course, this is bigger than just the MoveOn.org Voter Fund. People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) submitted an ad that was
also rejected. We need to let CBS know that this practice of
arbitrarily turning down ads that may be "controversial" – especially
if they're controversial simply because they take on the President –
just isn't right.

New MoveOn.org ads08/12/2004 03:15 PM MoveOn.org has posted the winners of its "pick the ad" contest. They
each feature a different talking head who happens to be a Republican
voting for Kerry. I don't find them very effective, but I also thought
Mondale walloped Reagan in the debates. I'd love to be wrong about
these ads. BTW, I'm pretty sure that in one of them I noticed the
weave in someone's tie spelling out "Bush = Hitler." Yeah, I'm sure of
it....
Moving MoveOn On12/24/2004 01:06 PM Chris Nolan publishes the second half of her critique of MoveOn.org at
Personal Democracy. Lots of great information and an animosity I don't
share. MoveOn isn't perfect, and if it were it still wouldn't
revolutionize politics or create a new movement, but I count it as an
important ally in our joint struggle. Anyway, the two-part series is
well worth reading. (Part 1 is here.)...

Dean's MoveOn-ish Movement
Dean's MoveOn-ish Movement12/02/2003 09:57 AM The Boston Globe today has an article (the link will break tomorrow)
about the Dean campaign's plan to ask its supporters MoveOn-ishly to
raise money to support Democratic Congresspeople running in tightly
contested elections. There are three obvious motivations for this: To
take back Congress, to do favors for some Congresspeople who can
return the favor, and to rebuild the Democratic base. That last one is
the kicker. This campaign from the beginning has felt more like a
movement than like a campaign (to paraphrase Natasha C). Given the
zealotry of the supporters, it's even more surprising that the...

CBS May Reject MoveOn.org Superbowl Ad01/17/2004 10:48 PM - Ain't our Money Green? - CBS May Decline MoveOn.org Ad
According to an AdAge.com article, CBS may reject MoveOn.org's bid to
have the winner of the "Bush in 30 seconds" ad competition run during
the Superbowl. A spokesman for CBS said the Viacom-owned network
has received the request from MoveOn to run the ad in the Super Bowl,
but added that the ad has to go through standards and practices before
CBS will say if it can run an advocacy ad during the game. The
spokesman said he didn't think it was likely that the spot would pass
standards and practices. (You can view the ad in question here.)
Exactly what these "standards and practices" are is unclear, but of
the advertisers listed, at least three are running political issue
ads: American Legacy Foundation: "Likely to be a new excecution in
the 'Connect-truth' (anti-smoking) campaign." Philip Morris USA: "A
new execution in its corporate responsibility, anti-smoking campaign."
White House Office of National Drug Control Policy: "The drug office
is in the big game for the third year in a row."
