NEC's "smart" batteries: invitation to
monopolistic DMCA nightmare
07/08/2004 05:32 AM

NEC has announced that its batteries will have cryptographic authentication schemes to prevent "low-quality counterfeits." Jason Schultz comments on the way that the DMCA turns such a sytem into a license to screw your customers by shutting out competitors who make cheaper batteries:

The software will be introduced in Japanese digital cameras by year's end and is expected to be used in 50 million units by 2007. The software is ideal for use in mobile phones and batteries, but NEC Electronics is also considering extending this technology to "smart" keys, printers and ink cartridges, as well as bundling the technology into hardware options.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, software-based authentication is the wave of the future. And now, with the DMCA, a near-monopoly! Future, here we come.

Fuji Novel Batteries, one of the largest manufacturers of batteries for portable electronics and digital cameras worldwide, is pleased to offer a specially engineered “reverse current protection” feature in its Fuji Novel D-Size and C-Size alkaline batteries. This feature actually blocks the completion of negative-to-negative current in batteries that are connected in series, thereby virtually eliminating potential damage and premature discharge from reverse current in incorrectly installed batteries. NEC's PaPeRo 2003 Robot

NEC's PaPeRo 2003 Robot 11/17/2003 10:23 AM
PaPeRo 2003 is what Geekzone brings to our attention. PaPeRo is a robot assistant who's name is a shortened form of Partner-type Personal Robot.. NEC has been revising this robot since 1997 and they think that now they have gotten it right. Personal Robot PaPeRo 2003 (and it's annoying marketing nonsense of upper and lower case letters) stands over a foot tall and can do some amazing things like recognize faces, listen for phrases and respond verbally, change the channel on the TV for you, check email for you, a lot of other stuff too numerous to mention. It has two cameras for eyes for face recognition so it can call you by name. It has four microphones for voice and command recognition. It has 5 ultrasonic sensors to help it navigate. TV output (we need your help obi-wan - this thing does sort of favor R2D2), a wireless internet connection, LEDs for facial expressions, it even has a stroking sensor so it can feel you stroking it's head like a Furby, etc., etc. I couldn't find a price for PaPeRo, but I'm guessing with a couple of cameras and the 5 ultrasonics and a wireless internet connection and all, It's probably not something cheap that you'd want to be every child's plaything, but from the child- friendly colors and look, you've got to wonder.

About Zawodny's invitation to flame

About Zawodny's invitation to flame 04/23/2004 07:13 PM

Yesterday I pointed to a post by Jeremy Zawodny that appeared to be calling for a flame fest with me as the guest of honor. I pointed to it after the first few comments made it clear that it wasn't going to be a flame fest. In fact, it was the most rational discussion of conflict disclosure I've seen to date in the weblog world. It left me bursting with pride to be part of this community.

There's nothing wrong when someone writes an essay advocating something that they have a financial interest in, as long as the interest is disclosed. For example, if you're going to buy a house, it's good to know you're reading something written by someone who will profit if you buy the house. That's why you get an inspector to look over the house after you decide to make an offer. And why you'd feel betrayed if it turned out the inspector was getting a percentage of the sale. (In fact the inspector would go to jail for doing that.)

So when a Google shareholder write's an empassioned defense of Google, it was correct for Zawodny to ask if he was a shareholder. He did ask, and got an answer, and as far as I was concerned, that was news, so I pointed to it. All of this is good, it's the system working as it should.

As I read John Battelle's analysis of search engines, I wonder if he is consulting for the companies he's writing about. John has a long career as a journalist and now as a professor, both professions require disclosures of conflicts of interest, so I assume he has no such conflict, because I haven't seen a disclaimer from him.

On the other hand, I often see people who I know have conflicts writing in their area of conflict without disclosure. In a world where everyone's playing footsie, if you tend to out people, you quickly get a rep for being difficult, or having personality problems. Does this sound familiar? Heh.

In any case, the thread on Zawodny's was a milestone. Thanks to Tara, Brian, Ryan, Randy, Scott and Rogers and the others who stood up and said it's important to know where people are coming from. Tell people when you have a conflict, they'll read you more carefully, they'll respect you more, and the world will be a better place.

08/30/2004 12:16 PM

nec_tablet_ph.jpg imageOh, I saw this new Versapro PC98-NX Tablet PC from NEC last night and I meant to put it up here, and completely spaced it. It's pretty slick, as far as these things go, with a Pentium M 1.1GHz, 10.4-inch screen, 20GB hard drive, and fairly decent battery life, depending on the battery. But the biggest thing is that it only weighs two pounds. That's approaching the sort of weight of, you know, a real tablet. That's always been the Tablet PC's biggest failing (well, maybe short of price). Who wants to carry around an eight pound slab in one arm all day?

No word if NEC will be bringing the PC98-NX to the US, but I encourage them to do so post haste.

Because of the small size and throughput of this unit, NEC suggests them for wireless HDTV transmissions.

On Monday morning, invitations to join the testing of Google's Gmail Web e-mail service were still fetching as much as $100 on eBay closed auctions. By Wednesday afternoon, sellers were lucky to crack the $20 mark.

Increased supply is the likely cause.

nec_touchscreen_china.jpg image

NEC is releasing two new GSM phones designed especially for the Chinese market, having replaced the traditional keypad with a touchscreen with handwriting recognition. The N610 [left] and N620 [right] have share 176 x 220 touchpanel LCDs, although the N620 has a 260k color screen as opposed to the N610's 65k screen, as well as a VGA camera and "vocal guidance." Both display the time through a hole in the flipscreen.

Is Chinese character recognition more or less accurate than Roman character recognition? I would think with thousands of characters, the opportunity for computer-aided hilarity would be a few hundreds times greater. Does anyone have any stories about screwed up Asian character recognition? If you send one to me, include pictures!

Tweaking CC's Standard Attribution
Language - An Invitation to Comment
06/05/2005 11:40 PM

So a new license draft has been posted here. The changes relate to our standard attribution language and the plan is that they take effect across all of our core licenses. The new version will be 2.5 because it is a minor change. We are in the process of working through other revisions to the licenses that will form the basis for version 3.0 but this change is needed now to take account of the demands of wikis & the open access journal community.

Many of you have given comments on the beta wiki license which have been very useful. The difference between this license draft and the beta wiki is that attribution in this draft can be to the author and/or one or more other parties. The beta wiki license only permitted attribution to the author *or* another party or parties. Also, we have included an additional example in the brackets to make it clear that one of the attributed parties may be a journal.

For a more detailed explanation of the changes, check out this posting to our licenses discussion list. You can join the discussion here.

Apple Computer has moved ahead of Toshiba to take the 5th position in U.S. PC sales during the first quarter, according to preliminary statistics released by Gartner Inc. today. Gartner said despite disappointing results for most vendors in the U.S. market in the first quarter, Apple's PC shipments in the U.S. increased 45.1 percent in the first quarter. The growth of the iMac and PowerBook categories were key drivers for the company during what has always been a traditionally weak consumer quarter. Worldwide PC shipments increased 10.3 percent in the first quarter of 2005, according to Gartner. Worldwide PC shipments totaled 50.4 million units in the first quarter of 2005, up from 45.7 million in the same period last year. Dell's worldwide growth rate fell below 20 percent for the first time in ten quarters, pulled down by a weaker performance in the U.S. market. Despite this, Dell's growth rate of 13.7 percent remained higher than the worldwide average, and it extended its lead in the worldwide rankings. Gartner said final statistics will be available soon to clients of Gartner's PC Quarterly Statistics Worldwide by Region program.

It is unclear, which chips have been attempted to counterfeit and whether the chips were also somehow modified. Source for the processors the swindlers used is also unknown. NEC Creates System For Blocking
Counterfeit Batteries

NEC Creates System For Blocking
Counterfeit Batteries
07/07/2004 06:04 PM
There were a bunch of stories recently about exploding mobile phones, and after investigating the issue, one of two reasons always turned up: either it wasn't really an "explosion" but a "graphite discharge" or counterfeit batteries that weren't up to snuff safety-wise were what caused the explosion. Nokia has taken the stance of using these cases to warn people not to use counterfeit batteries, but NEC has gone a step further and created a system that will block fake batteries from mobile phones. While the safety argument makes sense, this is somewhat similar to efforts by printer makers to create encryption systems that block knockoff ink cartridges, and it makes you wonder if some of the incentive to do this is to keep competitors from being able to enter the market.

The latest is that jeweler Tiffany is suing eBay because users sold fake Tiffany items. So, instead, they just sue eBay -- even though the company has done nothing wrong themselves.
