The Wailing Wall
The Wailing Wall
03/08/2004 11:19 PM
Expats snarfing down a late night snack from a local grilli between
pints of beer.
I hang out on an English speaker's/Expat bulletin board I
affectionately call The Wailing
Wall. Lately there seems to be surge in bright-eyed young yankees
looking to escape the US, a trend I expect to only gather in strength
as the election approaches. I'd like to think I prepared myself for
some of the challenges of moving to Finland reasonably well though
there have been days I've pondered buying a plane ticket home.
However, given a few of the wailers from North America on IESAF and
some of the hopefuls trying to escape the return to Mayberry that the
US is careening towards, I'm going to rant a little bit on how not to
be an idiot asshole yankee expat in the vain hope that it diminishes
some of the incoming schadenfreude fodder. It'll just feel good to
rant, too. :)
-
Don't announce that you're too young to drink in the US and that
you're gunning for being able to booze it up with your teenage
girlfriend without having to provide ID. Budweiser is 3 euro [$3.60]
per bottle here and with the money you save by staying home, buying a
fake ID and going to Costco for a $5.99 24-pack, you could buy an
education you so desperately need.
-
Don't ask us all to provide you with job contacts just because
you're young, just managed to graduate from Podunk U., have a job at
Circuit City and think that Nokia would surely hire you if only they
knew you were available. When we tell you that the only difference
between a Mexican in SoCal and expats in Finland is that the Mexican
has more job opportunities, we're not really joking and, no, we're not
trying to be a bummer, man.
-
Don't post in the most appallingly bad English which makes an
illiterate monkey look like Shakespeare and expect us to take you
seriously when you say that you're 'good with languages' and that
learning Finnish 'shouldn't be a problem'. When the folks whose 3rd
language is English and who speak, read and write your native language
better than you seem appalled, you should maybe stay home and take a
remedial English course.
-
Don't come to us with tales of woe about how your teenage Finnish
girlfriend you met on IRC whom you're sure you want to marry is giving
you the cold shoulder and that she surely couldn't be dumping you when
she says she wants more space.
-
Don't ask if we're enjoying the cold weather. It's not the cold that
gets to you, it's the dark, dark, dark November that does. This time
of year is practically balmy and sunny.
-
Don't whine about Finnish food. This is Finland and this is their
food. Fucking deal with it, bribe someone for a care package or go the
hell home.
-
Don't whine about the taxation. You're going to get taxed by two
governments. Your bitching about it isn't going to change the fact
that you're gonna pay. Keep reaching for that bar of soap and shut the
hell up.
-
Don't gripe about how quiet and unfriendly Finns are. Maybe you're
just an asshole and they're just uninterested in making small talk. If
you shut up long enough, they talk.
-
Don't bemoan how expensive stuff is here as nothing gets cheaper
once people have paid the higher price, i.e. the market is already
paying, so your boring diatribe about frightful prices is about as
likely to lower prices as pissing in the wind and getting your pants
moist.
-
Don't rail on the Finnish government until you're a citizen or at
least have lived here a few years, as you are merely a guest in the
country and we've heard it all before. Bitching about the US
government, however, is more than welcome.
-
Don't ask us if we think you're crazy if you want to move to Finland
as we aren't always sure of that answer for ourselves.
-
Don't get pissy when I rant about expats who irk the
crap out of me because they never seem to enjoy anything. What
ever happened to the country filled with people who sang 'we are the
world' and all that rot in the spirit of global understanding and
tolerance of other cultures? Cheer up and lighten up.
Familiarity breeds contempt. How accurate that is. The reason we
hold truth in such respect is because we have so little opportunity to
get familiar with it. -- Mark Twain

I found this message from Wisconsin's mainstream Christian
ecumenical organization heartening.
Friend,
If there are no objections, I would like for us to dedicate our
"Courage for Nonviolence" Conference, Jan. 23-24, 2004, to Rachel
Corrie, the 23 yr. old female human rights activist, who on Sunday,
March 17, 2003, was crushed to death by an IDF bulldozer while she was
protesting the destruction of a palestinian home.
I will include a commemorative statement in our brochure, and
announce our dedication of the conference to Rachel at the opening of
the conference.

Wall Street's Google FUD
Wall Street's Google FUD
08/06/2004 06:45 PMBefore Google officially announced their IPO and it was only
rumored
that they would do an auction style IPO, we noted that the banks
would flip out about this, and do whatever they could to stop it.
Ever since the rumors first came out, Wall Street has
crank
ed up the PR buzz to suggest that Dutch auction IPOs are bad news.
Then, once Google finally did announce their plans to go public, even
the banks taking part have started
complai
ning about it and suggesting that people not invest in the IPO.
Anyone who knows anything about Wall Street knew this would happen.
Unfortunately, plenty of people don't know anything about Wall Street,
and still aren't skeptical despite the years of bad advice people have
received from bankers. So, it's good that at least someone has
written a piece detailing what we've been saying for a while (and
thanks to the anonymous submitter who point this out to us):
Wall Street is
doing everything possible to make Google look bad so no other
uppity company gets the idea to actually price their shares at a
market price, rather than leaving a big pile of money on the table for
the bankers and their friends. Now, it is true that the auction
process has its problems as well. It's not the perfect solution.
However, it certainly sounds better than selling shares to an
underwriter at $10 who passes it on to their friends to flip that same
day at $90, as happened during the boom years. Investment bankers
purposely underprice shares, which is bad for the company selling
shares. The auction may tend to overprice shares (which could be bad
for investors buying into it), but it doesn't leave money on the table
for the company going public.

This $14,000 wireless spycam
purportedly climbs all sorts of vertical surfaces. I wish I could see

"A revolutionary, new remote controlled (R/C) robot. The
SpyBot Climber easily scales many smooth and uneven vertical surfaces
– wall board, plaster, brick, cinder block, and siding are
negotiable for this versatile robot. It can even go across sturdy
ceilings if placed there first – although it can transition from
a horizontal (ground) surface to a vertical one, and back, it can not
go from a vertical to an inverted surface or directly around corners
unassisted."

NetWare: The writing's on the wall
08/07/2004 05:06 AMI came across an interesting article in Network World's sister
publication, InfoWorld, last month that looked at the future of
NetWare (see link below). It didn't offer anything new from executives
at Novell, quoting Novell CTO Alan Nugent to the effect that Novell
will continue to support NetWare customers into the future. He and
others have told me the same thing at various times. And, while it is
an important commitment that Novell won't abandon customers the way
Banyan did when it dropped the Vines networking software, it really
means that Novell is not going to be improving or extending NetWare.

Digital Gallery for Your Wall
Digital Gallery for Your Wall
07/07/2004 11:20 AMPhotoVu recently announced the PV1910 wireless picture frame to
display your latest and greatest digital creations.
The PV1910 is the industry's first Wi-Fi®, 19" LCD
digital picture frame. Recognizing that most digital camera users
store, organize, edit, and share their pictures with the computer, the
PV1910 compliments the way you work today by displaying your photos or
presentations in their native formats and without creating yet another
photo storage location. The new photo "shoebox" isn't in the closet
or basement any more, it is on the computer!
While the digital frame is not a new concept, the addition of Wi-Fi
makes this product particularly appealing. Older versions either
accepted a memory card or in some cases had a modem built in that
downloaded pictures.
The integration of iPhoto is an added bonus. Since iPhoto has built
in sharing capability I assume it pulls photos from a specifically
named album from within iPhoto. However, I don't see the market
growing until the price of these products drop dramatically. $1500 is
a bit steep. Come up with one that is about 11x14 and costs a couple
hundred bucks and I'll probably put one in my home.
Hmmm... Maybe Apple will come out with one of these. Adding a
product like this to the new Airport Express makes some
sense.
