NNF is a library written in plain C that
implements multilayer feed-forward neural
networks. It's fast and easy to incorporate in
your own application. It includes different
activation functions and the delta error
back-propagation algorithm. Saving and loading
routines are included. It is released under the
Lesser General Public License.
Changes:
The learning algorithms were completed for all the
respective activation functions. Two minor bugs
were fixed. More documentation was written.

01/04/2005 02:40 AMCory Doctorow:
Jeremy sez, "I've posted January's story to Futurismic, called
'Consensus Building.' This is another entry from Tom Doyle (author of
September's '
Art's
Appreciation'. It's a mean-spirited story about naked ambition,
greed and the fungibility of computer-assisted memory. We've also
re-opened Futurismic for fiction submissions. We've increased our
permissible word limit to 15,000 and we're going to stay open until we
get a year's worth of stories. Our guidelines are
here and
our web form for submitting is
here."
Futurismic's publishing some amazing science fiction and this story
doesn't disappoint. It's a great 10 minute read, perfect for the Web.
As always, she examined herself in the mirror, searching for
vulnerability. She was rewarded by the usual view: an attractively
fit, Slavic cheek-boned thirty-something who could still pass for
twenty-something.
"I could lose some weight," she thought. But no, she hadn't really
thought that. It was a chip idea. She consciously interfaced with the
AI to avoid further confusion. "What the fuck are you talking about? I
look great."
"You could lose a few pounds." The voice was a more clinical version
of her own. "And your skin could do with some work, too. I can
assist."
"No, thank you. Resume normal." She concentrated on getting ready for
work, but the ritual had been tainted. Despite herself, she felt
larger, flabbier, distinctly less attractive. To compensate, she
deliberately dressed sexier than her usual businesslike attire, with
shorter skirt and flashier blouse, and forced her hair to have a good
day. She refused to submit to moods as a matter of policy.
Another thought tugged at her mind. "You could really use a new
outfit." The tone was that of an enthused continental fashion
designer.

Ideas Born from a Dieing Neural Network?
Ideas Born from a Dieing Neural Network?
02/10/2004 03:00 AMThe Washington Post has an extremely interesting article about
Stephen Thaler's Creativity Machine. The Creativity Machine is a new
kind
of Neural Network from Imagination Engines, Inc. Basically, it's like
you
take a
Neural Network and fully train it, then you go back and randomly kill
off a few
nodes until it starts to hallucinate causing it to have a sort of near
death experience. Either it will go off on a
really bad trip, or it might cause it to have an imagination and
generate something new like the works of Shakespeare (as if that were
a new thing). Apparently, by killing off a
few neurons it causes some Neural Nets to go noisy and perhaps start
thinking and figuring out new ideas? I'm not sure I believe it, but
it seems Steven Thaler figured out that by doing
this new technique and forcing anomolies, all sorts of new innovative
ideas and dreams can be born like harder substances than diamonds and
bad christmas
carols, or perhaps even the recipe for mom's pudding and the answer to
everything before they can shut it off. With all of these new deep
thoughts being generated, one could wish that they could come up with
the right questions
for the answers it gives (hey, that's sort of like Jeopardy). For that
matter what would a neural net's dieing wish be? (BTW, happy love
your robot day - Feb 7th!)

Five Questions
Five Questions
03/31/2005 09:09 AM
I'll be out of
town and offline for a couple of days, so I thought I'd take a day to
think about where to go next with How to Save the World.
Therefore please consider this as a kind of 'open thread' and tell me
what you'd like to see here next. And to provoke your thinking here
are
four more questions to ponder:
- Without getting into the ethics of the case, and without
blaming the media, please explain why so many people care so much
about
that one singular right-to-die case in Florida?
- What's a
better name for 'the environment' that is less separate in connotation
from human civilization?
- Why does it break our heart to throw out teddy bears
and
other stuffed animals, even if they're not childhood toys with
memories
attached to them?
- How could we effectively teach online
the critical skills that take a lot of practice and one-on-one
coaching? I'm referring to skills like effective listening,
collaboration, and even meditation. It seems to me our inability to do
this well is the greatest limitation today of the Internet as an agent
of change.

RDF questions
RDF questions

Danny
Ayers: Of course if Atom was expressed in an RDF-friendly
syntax* then FOAF and every other RDF language could be used
directly in Atom without having to jump through hoops.
Danny, a few questions. For the basis of my questions,
presume a comparison against
RSS 1.0, which
unquestionably is an RDF friendly vocabulary.
- I embedded FOAF inside of my feed. Wouldn't the syntax
for embedding FOAF inside of dc:creator be pretty much the
same? In other words, wouldn't it be the same amount of
"hoops", or lack thereof?
- To me, the killer app of metadata is query. If I were to
switch from atom:name to foaf:name, people would have to update
their XPath
queries in order to access the data in its new place. How
would RQL handle
this? Wouldn't they also have to update their
queries?
To me, this gets at the heart of the value proposition for
RDF. What I hear is that it essentially provides
extensibility for free. I'd just like to see this promise
expressed in tangible terms.

03/19/2003 10:42 PMSo if Saddam and sons do go into self-imposed exile today or
tomorrow, does that mean there won't be a war, and we'll just toss in
a new leader in his place?
I assume we'll start bombing lots of suspected WMD facilities when
the 48 hours are up. Since they're our best guesses where weapons
previously not found may reside, we're going to be blowing up lots of
stuff and making mistakes (they can't all be WMD facilities). Anyone
see a problem with that?
How do know when it is over? When Saddam's body is found? When
weapon storage areas are all blown up? What's the goal of this action
and why isn't it clearly being communicated?
